Wonderful to see someone has an interest in the first great Oriana. She still exists, recently opening as a floating hotel and leisure complex in Shanghai China. Oriana was the fastest liner ever built for service to Australia and her trial speeds were actually greater than those of Cunard's Queen Elizabeth. I had the pleasure of spending 4 weeks sailing on this ship, a vessel which was or curious appearance on the outside but very attractive on the inside.

Old Oriana - had to be the world's most ugly ship. The new Oriana is pretty ugly too!

No, Cunard, no! The ORIANA I is the maritime equivalent of Barbra Streisand - so she's not a great beauty, but one likes to look at her!

As for ORIANA II, I think she is a beaut, a perfect example of neoclassical ship design!

But I am curious as to why you think the second one is ugly...

Sorry Rex, I'm with "Cunard", the orginal Oriana's superstructure is VERY odd. She has a nice hull though - but I don't like the strange stern.

I don't really like the look of new Oriana or Arcadia either. It's hard for me to explain why, but like the 'Mistral' they are just rather dull, rather square and uninteresting. I'm sure that they are nice internally.

Yes, I DO! But that's okay...that's why there are so many different ships for different people.

But in ORIANA II's defense, she has lovely tiered after decks (totally nonexistent today), as well as a relatively long foredeck compared to her contemporaries.

As for ORIANA I - she wasn't everyone's cup of tea, I know this. I have seen her in the flesh when she was at Beppu, Japan. I simply enjoyed looking at her. It was her unique appearance that set her apart.

Rex - Oriana 2 is like a sheep ship, there is not one thing about her that i think makes her even slightly beautiful. When she was in Fremantle, she looked just like a factory, her funnel is boring, her superstructure has nothing to try and break up its balconies and windows (that's why she looks like a sheep ship). She has a short flat & fat bow and her bridge windows are bulky and spaced out with white paint.

I think Arcadia is a lot nicer then Oriana because she has a better bridge, better funnel and is more stream lined superstructure - however Arcadia is not the worlds most beautiful ship.

As for Oriana 1 - were they drunk when she was designed? I don't like her superstructure or her stern.

Why said Oriana I and Oriana II are UGLY ?

Oriana I is a very classic and has a great design cruise ship, such as NORWAY and QE2. So we cann't compare their between new modern Oriana II.

About Oriana II. Her aft is very great, today many new ship's design also follow her, such as Aurora and SuperStar Leo. Many big windows... Very great in inner design.....Her out look give us very stable feeling. So she also a great ship!

There are several comments above about the previous Oriana's odd stern arrangement. That very large teak deck was perfect for soaking up the sun on long stretchs of sea days. One deck down, the tall vertical windows on both sides and overlooking the stern, made for a very pleasant room in which to watch the world sail by. How many of today's current liners or cruise ships have such wonderfull views out over the stern wash from a room other than a dining room? The Stern Gallery, I think that was the name, was one of my favourite spots. I will agree though, that odd she was. Never the less, a very pleasant ship to sail on-the ship that got me hooked on cruise ships for ever.

Rex - I completely agree that she is very interesting to look at, its a very complex looking design, but it lacks style and I think she is ugly, but it is interesting! IM sure she was great on the inside.

I have to agree with Rex on this one....there
is something that captures the eye with the
old Oriana......she is surely not beautiful,
but she has appeal.

One other point, in my opinion ORIANA is
the best sounding name for a ship I have
ever heard!! I cannot explain it, but it
has a glorious sound.

BTW.....is she still able to "get up steam"?

She's not that ugly of a ship, but the form and layout of the two funnels presents a rather strange appearance, as does that Swiss-cheese stern. But other than that, she's got rather pleasant lines.

"Aft funnel" was actually an air intake for both the boiler room and gallies, not an exhaust as most suspect. Disjointed design yes; ugly ??

Well I hear all your likes and dislikes about THE ORIANA, as a baker on her for a yearin 1962, I found her to be great, we [the crew] had air con. in all our two berth cabins, our own swimming pool on the foredeck, movies in The Pig every night and we even got paid too !! There was always rivalry between the Canberra [P.O.]and Oriana [Orient Line]and at least we did not have about 300tons of concrete in our bow as was the case with Canberra. I've always had a soft spot for the old girl and am pleased she is still around even if she is now chinese.

Grant, Glad you enjoyed my buns, a fresh bread roll HAD to be on each passengers side plate for dinner and lunch each day, we sometimes had 2000 passengers and 900 crew.
We made lots of dough :-)
Wendymike, Yes she was in her correct livery, which all the O boats had . a Buff hull and yellow funnel,s. They where changed when P.O.took over 1964.
