Particularly if you are British, I'd reccomend that you join the excellent 'Ocean Liner Society'.

They have there own magazine, hold regular meetings in London, have an annual exhibition and organise ship visits to the British ports - all for a very modest fee. See their web site:

The UK Ocean Liner society will be holding their annual International Ship Show in London on Saturday October 20th. It will be at Westminster Central Hall.

It features lots of maratime books, memorabillia, ship modles,and lectures. You do not need to be a member of the OLS to go - addmission is £5.00

I'd really reccomend it to anyone that lives in the London area, so put the date in your diary.

From time to time CruiseTalkers ask, how do we get to visit a ship in port? As a private individual, it is pretty difficult to achieve.

Well, the UK Ocean Liner Society is presently negotiating Visits to "BRAEMAR" "Albatros" "Sea Cloud 11" "Sunbay" "Victoria" "Hebridean Princess" "Switzerland and "QE2".

America, Europe etc. must have similar Societies?

Here in the US we have the Steamship Historical Society of the United States. Local chapters all over the country have regular meetings and often arrange ship visits in nearby ports. The annual dues are reasonable, they publish a quarterly magazine and have huge archives of documents and photos.

Make sure you check out the Ocean Liner Museum as well. It's a "virtual" museum but the events are very real. Dazzle & Drab : Ocean Liners at War, opens September 21 in New York City.
