REGENT JEWEL: Has been renamed CALYPSO and was cruising under cahrter for Transocean Tours until last year. A planned subcharter failed and the charter with Transocean Tours had to be withdrawn. The ship, still owned by the remaining rest of Regency Cruises, renamed Jewel Cruises, is laid up in Piraeus / Greece.
REGENT STAR: has been sold to Peroyianakis Lines and renamed SEA HARMONY. But it´s not yet in service and still laid up in Piraeus too.
REGENT SEA: belongs now to a group of financials named New York Cruise Company and has been renamed SEA. It is laid up in Tampa / Florida. It was scheduled to cruise as the GRIPSHOLM under Transocean Tours charter but plans were withdrawn when Regency announced bankrupty.
REGENT SUN: belongs now to CIT Financials and is laid up at Freeport / Bahamas. It should be converted into an Health SpA ship providing special threatments. It is currently named SUN.
REGENT SPIRIT: has been sold to Salamis Lines and is operated, like some Louis Cruise Lines vessels, out of Limassol / Cyprus for 2 and 3 day cruises to Egypt and Israel. It was renamed SALAMIS GLORY.
REGENT RAINBOW: has been sold to Louis Cruise Lines and is currently chartered to Thomson Cruises as THE EMERALD.
REGENT SKY: this vessel, originally ordered by Stena Line and never been taken over, was scheduled to cruise for Regency Cruises as the REGENT SKY. But due to the bankrupty is didn´t work out and the vessel has been taken over by Lelakis Lines. But if the continuing of the building at Avlis shipyards in Piraeus will take place soon, is still open.

Thanks again Patrick for another very informative post. I sailed on REGENT SUN to Canada 2 months before Regency abruptly ceased operation. It was a great cruise, but things were obviously going downhill.

It´s a real pity that this line does almost not exists anymore (except the new-formed Jewel Cruises). The REGENT SUN was a very nice liner, already when she cruised as the HANSEATIC. It is the ship, which gave many ideas to the construction of her new former fleet-mate HAMBURG (now MAXIM GORKIY).
I hope the SUN will cruise again soon.

Thanks Patrick. This is GREAT. I may still be able to get on the old Statendam and the old Gripsholm. What did the Regent Spirit used to be? I just checked out the picture on the travel page sheet, and she i a real beauty. Also, what is a health spa ship? I thought the Regent Sun was the old Shalom. Did she get sold and end up in tandem with Hamburg? (Now that I look more closely, it's does look like the two were sisters. I wonder what the story was.) Will the Sun be cruising or laid up as another Florida destination?

Thanks for all your information.

Yes blf49, The REGENT SUN was the SHALOM (Zim Company).

Built in 1964 in France, renamed HANSEATIC in 1967 (Deutsche Atlantik Schiffahrts, DORIC in 1973 (Home Lines), ROYAL ODYSSEY in 1981 (Royal Cruise Line), REGENT SUN in 1988 (Regency Cruises, Lelakis Group) and then SUN VENTURE and SUN as Patrick said, after the bankruptcy of Regency cruises.
627.8 X 81.4 ft . 17891 GRT. 25000 HP. 806 pass & 350 crew members.
Bye.

perfect, Vaccaro !
just to add some information about the relationship between the SUN and the MAXIM:
After the SHALOM was sold in 1967 to Deutsche-Atlentik-Linie, Hamburg and renamed HANSEATIC, she was one of Germany´s finest and most popular cruiseship and Transatlantic-Liner, to replace the former 2-funnel-liner HANSEATIC.
In 1968, Axel Bitch-Christensen, owner of the Deutsche-Atlantik-Linie, decided to have a new ship build at HDW yards which shall become a fleet-mate for the HANSEATIC. With much enthusiasm and much financial help from the Hamburgish government, the ship was ordered and delivered in 1969 as the HAMBURG. But already in 1973, the line started to have huge problems with money since the Transatlantic-turns were no more booked and the ships became too expensive. So the HANSEATIC was laid up in Hamburg and shortly afterwards sold to Home Lines and renamed DORIC. When the HANSEATIC was out of service, the HAMBURG was renamed into HANSEATIC to keep a famous name alive. ABC thought that this could save his line from bankrupty. But he failed. In 1974 also this HANSEATIC had to be sold and from several interests, the Russians made the deal and purchased the ship. Since then it is sailing over the worldwide seas as the MAXIM GORKIY. And, even if it´s a Russian ship, it anyway remained German because Neckermann Seereisen took the ship in full-charter for 15 years and then Phoenix Reisen chartered the ship for another unlimited period. Many repeaters still call the ship "The lovely Hamburgerin".
I think this was one of the most interesting and noticed sales of a ship to Russia.
Still today she´s one of the finest ships on the German market.
the SUN will probably offer special threatments like Thalasso-therapies, Turkish-baths, health-care and so on. If this project will be realized, I don´t know.
There was a while where Sovcomflot showed interests in this ship but haven´t heared anything about this anymore. Louis Lines was also interested, but when they wanted to start the engines, the was a major demage and Louis instead bought the OLYMPIC from ROC and renamed it THE TOPAZ.
Please check the Topic "ROYAL VIKING SEA" where Timber describes what´s going on with the SUN.
The REGENT SPIRIT was originally build in 1961 as the ANNA NERY for Cia. Nac. de Nav. Costeira Autaquia Fed., Rio de Janeiro. In 1978 sold to Kavounides Hellenic Cruises and renamed DANAOS. 1978 arrested in Piraeus. Then renamed CONSTELLATION for Kavolines Corp., Piraeus, still laid up. In 1988 sold to Epirotiki Lines (now Royal Olympic Cruises) and in 1989 back to Kavounides Shipping Co., Piraeus, still laid up. In 1992 sold to Rigeway Shipping (E.Lelakis Group) and renamed MORNING STAR and shortly later sold to Regency Cruises and renamed REGENT SPIRIT. When arrested in 1995 in Nice, Salamis Lines bought the ship and renamed her SALAMIS GLORY.
Her sistership ROSA DE FONSECA became later on the ATHIRA for PT Kallla Lines, Ujung Pandang and was scrapped last year.

Patrick, the perfect answers in this topic (and others too) are yours! You're a real cruise professional with a very interesting inside point of view.

To be honest, I forgot HAMBURG became HANSEATIC in 73 during a very short period before to become MAXIM GORKIY in 74.

It is interesting to notice the SALAMIS GLORY (REGENT SPIRIT in May 1995 at Nice in fact) was not sold "normally" but auctioned to Salamis Lines because of the bankruptcy of Regency Cruises and according the French law. We can easily imagine that it was a good and cheap deal for Salamis Lines.

To add few precisions about the career of the ROSA DE FONSECA, she was built at Split in Yugoslavia in 1962 (like her near syster ANNA NERY), sold in 1975 and renamed P/S SEVEN SEAS. Bought by Mitsui OSK Lines in 1977 as NIPPON MARU before she became ATHIRAH in 1991 for Kallas Lines (Indonesia).
Bye.

Patrick & Vaccaro - where do you find all this information? It must take you hours researching all this stuff. Do you get it from magazines or the internet?

Hello Sympatico,

My way to obtain these informations is very banal in fact. As I am a ship passionate since I have 10, I used to collect books (about 80), magazines, brochures, photos, papers, models, films...
Sometimes it is rather fast to find an information, sometimes it is long but it is not a big problem because it allows me to learn in my passion and to share these few infos with you.
I would like to be a cruise professional, like our master Patrick, to be able to access and collect the numerous and accurate informations he has.
Thank you again Patrick to share these infos with us.
Bye.

Like Vaccaro, I use to collect, books, pictures, brochures and magazines from everywhere since I was around 12 years old. My grandfather was officer on the old German sail vessel GORCH FOCK (which is now the TOVARICH) - a new GORCH FOCK is still sailing today - my father was a fan of cruising and I think I earned things from both of them so it´s even worse with me.
Due to my job I have good relations to many cruiselines and they also update me with their latest info.
I created a file in my computer which contains more than 400 cruiseships and cruiseferrys (from tiny to huge) and I update it as soon as I get any new info about the ownership, cruiseline, operator, registry...
Therefore I´m able to give information so fast and I enjoy giving it to people who are really interested in them. My real professional area are the former Soviet ships. Many people think most of them don´t exist anymore or are sold and I love to see the surprising faces when they get known that the ship is still afloat and is still owned by Russians and Ukrainians and only hided behing the charter of another known Western cruiseline.
Cruiseships just are my life.
