WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE FAIRWIND
AND FAIRSEA? WE VISITED THE FAIRWIND IN THE EARLY 80'S, IT WAS

Both of those ships are still in service as
the ALBATROS and FAIR PRINCESS. The ships were sold to Princess and renamed DAWN PRINCESS and FAIR PRINCESS. THey were sold when the new ships began to come out. The
ALBATROS is sailing around Europe. The FAIR PRINCESS was supposed to be sold to Regency
Cruises as the REGENT ISLE. THis never materialized as that company went bankrupt.
So P&O replace the old FAIR STAR with the
FAIR PRINCESS. How's that!

I travled on Sitmar 4 times in the 80's including the Fairwind and Fairsky. I still love the old line, and have been working on a tribute page dedicated to Sitmar, the lines ships, and what the line would have become had it not been purchased by Princess. You can see photos and a complete history of each ship on the page. Please tell me what you think. Here is the address:

Hello,
Skyej, welcome on the forum you too.
After a quick visit, your site appears to be very well documented. Good work! I'll visit it again to learn more about Sitmar.
As a ship afficionado, i would like to see more ship pictures, among these, interior ones. The link "passenger's sealetters" doesn't seems to work for me and i would like to read opinions about cruising onboard thes ships. Will this site updated soon?
However, congratulations again and tell us all the news regarding the old Sitmar's ships.
Bye.

Another little bit of info on the Fair Princess, she replaced the Fairstar in February 1997 after the latter ship was withdrawn and sold for scrap. Fairstar was a very nice ship and popular down here in the South Pacific but her machinery was quite unreliable in the last few years and her hull was getting a little tired towards the end! After P&O took over in 1986 they spent quite a lot of money on refurbishments and she looked better than ever but was beginning to get a bit tired. She also had a very high density - up to 1600 passengers is quite impressive for a 20000 tonne ship! She lost the Sitmar "V" funnel logo after the P&O takeover and went through a few individual funnel colour schemes over the next few years. Fair Princess now has the buff P&O funnel colour. She seems to have settled down well but had a number of teething troubles which now seem to have been solved, and P&O have spent quite a lot of money on her. There have been rumours, as yet unconfirmed, that she will be withdrawn but nothing concrete is known yet. For the first time in many years P&O now have full time competition in the South Pacific, being NCL's Norwegian Star (ex Royal Viking) which is proving extremely popular and, I would imagine, is more modern than Fair Princess. So it will be interesting to see what happens! I saw Fair Princess a few months back and she looked in very good order and well maintained so here's hoping she stays around for some time yet.

As a side bit of trivia, I believe I heard somewhere that the current Crown and Regal Princesses were originally to be built for Sitmar. Then the buyout occurred, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Thats right these were supposed to be sisters to the STAR PRINCESS(FAIR MAJESTY).
P&O just tweaked the plans for the better, and added more space. The STAR PRINCESS is 63,500 GRT,the CROWN and REGAL are about 70,000 GRT. Sitmar was a good line,I was sorry Princess bought them out!

Sitmar was a great company. I was 10 when I was on the Fairwind in 1980. I was lucky to have parents who enjoyed cruising and now my wife and I take my son along on our trips. Anyways, after Princess Cruises aquired Sitmar, they took on some of the endearing charachteristics that my parents and I loved about that company. The restaurant staff still had that italian charm even though it's becoming more and more international. And the kid's center was as devoted and energetic as I remembered. If anybody had to buy Sitmar let's be glad it was Princess and not Carnival.

Last year while cruising the Mediterranean I saw the Albatross, formerly the Fairwind. I had an outside cabin and woke up the first morning in Villefranche, France. We were anchored off the coast a bit and right next to us was the Fairwind. I couldn't believe it. I had no idea I would see her again after 18 years. Right when I saw it I
knew it was her. I couldn't help but sit out on the balcony and think about the week I spent on her. I tried to explain to my wife the magnitude of this experience for me. But she thought I was just crazy. I never thought an experience I had as a child would move me as an adult, now I know different. And now I make it a point to bring my kid.
