Hello, everyone, I'm new to "Cruise Talk" and this is only my second post. I have been reading the posts on this page for several months off and on. I enjoy hearing some of your discussions on ocean liners of the past and some of the classic cruise ships. I have a trivia question, I don't know how hard it will be for some of you ship buffs, but here it goes....HOW MANY RIVITS DID IT TAKE TO BUILD THE QUEEN MARY?

Welcome from a fellow ocean liner nut - WFgibbs! You wouldn't have any relationship to William Frances Gibbs would you? I know the answer to your trivia about the "Mary". Queen Mary had Ten MILLION rivits! If you put all those rivits together in a pyramid it would equal a pyramid of 25,000 cubic ft. Each rivit was 3 inches long. That's a lot of rivits!

Barryboat must have a copy of "The book of comparisons" about Queen Mary so I won't ask a trivia question from that.
Queen Mary did 1001 crossings of the Atlantic and steamed 569,429 miles during her wartime service alone. Does anyone know how many miles her young cousin QE2 has steamed in her career so far ?
(By the way Gibbs middle name was Francis not Frances which is a girl's name....)

Sorry, I meant 1001 crossing throughout her career not just wartime....

Hello,
Gerry, welcome to the forum! For me, you'r a real gold mine! Your replies (technical or regarding the "Queen Mary Project") are very appreciated.
Regarding QE2, for the last three years, i don't know. I'm just able to write that on January 2, 1996 at 21:00 gmt, she clocked up her four-millionth mile, the equivalent of sailing around the world 185 times!
Bye.

Vaccaro,
Thanks very much ! I really enjoy reading the forum aswell and find the whole travelpage site excellent.
You were right in your reply but she has done a bit more than that since...

Since 18th November 1968 until 30th June 1999 (when my records go up to) she has steamed a total of 4,535,090 nautical miles (5,215,353 statute miles)
This is made up of 4,429,457 nm at sea and 105,634 nm under pilotage. With 175,589.92 hours steaming time she has had an average speed of 25.23 knots throughout her career so far...

An earlier post I made seemed to vanish, but I wanted to say that Ten Million Rivits is the answer I was looking for. No relation to William Francis Gibbs. I picked a fun username and profile based on the ship designer who was the man that created the Leviathan, and designed the SS America and SS United States.

I am looking forward to your posts, Gerry, since you actually worked on QE-2 as an officer. My question to you is, why is Cunard redesigning the QE-2's interiors again, since it seems they just did this a few years ago by installing the Golden Lion Pub, the new Yacht Club and redesigned Grand Lounge? The ship's main entrance was completely restyled, as well as the Lido. I haven't even had a chance to see QE-2 with her new fittings, and Cunard is already changing her interiors. This sounds a bit excessive.

Regarding the Queen Marys rivets, a couple of years ago when the "Glorious 59th" Anniversary celebrations were held at Long Beach, a rather overzealous reporter asked John Brown (a member of the original design team) whether it was true that the Mary had ten million rivets in her. His typically dry reply was "I don't know, I never counted them" Further to the comments on the next QE2 refit, many of the changes being made in refitting cabins and replacing soft furnishings are in areas that have not been touched in some time, including some cabins which were not part of the last major refit and many of which are long overdue as some areas were looking a little tired. Personally I will be more pleased when they re-instate the PROPER five day transatlantic crossings instead of these reduced-speed six day efforts!

Gerry, Yes as a matter of fact, I do have the book of comparisons for the Queen Mary. I have nearly every book printed about Queen Mary, and in fact I have a book by Neil Potter and Jack Frost, called "The Queen Mary...The Inevitable Ship". first printed in 1962. Great book!! I believe the son of Jack Frost, worked on QE-2 for quite a few years. I don't remember his first name, but he was my supervisor, and Assistant Cruise Director. Perhaps you knew him??

Ok, I found his name in one of the daily programs "QE2 Daily Programme" for August 7th, 1992, which is also that terrible night when QE-2 ran aground just after leaving Martha's Vinyard. His name is Lindsay Frost, and he was the Deputy Cruise Director. Cruise Director was Peter Longley, and of course the Social Hostess was Elaine Mackay - Voyage #849. I saved all the Daily Programmes from when I was signed onto QE-2 as Stage Manager. It was Chris Wells, Second Officer, Navigator that I recall doing the "Driving the Hotel" talk. It was quite funny at times. I also have the book, "Driving the Hotel" by Peter Moxom, which is very informative.

The Queen Mary 1, now has had a longer career as a museum, than as an Atlantic ferry
