This cruise trivia will only concern questions about the European cruise market. Feel free to participate and learn more about European ships.
This weeks question:
Which two almost identical sisterships were originally build under the same name on a German shipyard, the second one six years after the first one, and did never sail together for the same company ?

Here is the answer for the last week's question:
MS ASTOR and MS ASTOR II.
a few details for information only:
The first one, MS ASTOR, was build in 1980 for Hadag Cruise Line, Hamburg / Germany.
In 1984 Hadag sold the ship to Safmarine, Cape Town / Southafrica and it kept its name.
When in 1985 the ship was sold to Deutsche Seereederei, Rostock / Germany and renamed MS ARKONA, Safmarine ordered a second ship at HDW in Germany which entered service in 1987.
This one was then named MS ASTOR II. It was identical in layout, only a bit longer. One year later also this ship was sold again to Sovcomflot, Moscow / Russia and renamed MS FEDOR DOSTOEVSKIY. Today it sails under its original name MS ASTOR again for Sovcomflot.

This weeks question:
Which former Cunard Transatlantic liner, a long time sailing for Princess Cruises as well, has been sold to V-Ships, Monaco and is now one of the most popular cruise ships on the German market ?

The correct answer is: TS ALBATROS
It was built in 1957 as SYLVANIA for Cunard, later rebuilt as a cruise ship, sold to Sitmar Cruises and renamed FAIRWIND. When P&O Princess Cruises took over Sitmar Cruises, the ship was transfered too and named DAWN PRINCESS. In 1993 it was sold to V-Ships / Vlasov Group Monaco and chartered to Phoenix Cruises which is operating the ship with its current name ALBATROS.
It is one of two identical sisterships, the other one is the FAIR PRINCESS, still sailing for P&O Holidays in Australian waters.
This weeks question:
Which popular russian cruise ship sank in February 1986 in the Cook Street (Newzeeland) after running on a reef ?
Hint: Today's MARCO POLO (ex ALEKSANDR PUSHKIN) is one of its 4 sisterships.

That is absolutely the right answer !
MS MIKHAIL LERMONTOV was build in 1970 at MTW yards, Germany as the last of five identical sisterships for the Soviet cruise fleet.
On the 16th of February 1986, at 6.00pm the ship ran on the reef and at 10.00pm everybody was evacuated alife, except one crewmember who died. At 10.30pm the MIKHAIL LERMONTOV sank totally and is laying 33 meters under water.

This weeks question:

Germany's best rated cruise ship is now sold and will change the fleet at the end of 1999. What is its current name and what will be its new name and line ?

Hello Vaccaro, I'm sorry but the correct answer was MS EUROPA. She's currently the highest rated German ship. MS EUROPA is now sold to Star Cruises, chatered back to Hapag Lloyd Cruises, and will be transfered end of 1999 to its new line. Star Cruise will rename the ship into MS MEGASTAR ASIA and plans to convert it into the most luxurious vessel of the word.
The CS AIDA is what we call a club ship and is only rated with four stars. But it's correct that this ship is sold to NCL and chatered back to Deutsche Seetouristik / Arkona Reisen for the next years.

This weeks question:
Which four cruise ships were sailing under the management of Prestige Cruises, a joint venture company between Sovcomflot and Costa Crociere which was created in 1991 and ceased operations at the end of 1992 ?
Hint: Each of the two lines, Sovcomflot and Costa, provided two ships.

Hello Patrick and everybody!
For the last question about "Europa", i simply forget this part of the first sentence:"Germany best rated cruise ship" and of course my answer was wrong.Next time i'll read more carefuly!
I'm not a cruise professional,i'm only a great passionate of liners and cruise ships.
Be that as it may,i had not the good answer in my head but after some researchs in my personal documentation or on the web,i think yes.I'm going to search the answer to this week question.
Bye.

Hello Patrick!
I'm new in this beautiful trivia game.
Cruise ships are my love (after my Wife!) and
finding persons like You knowing everything
about them make me very happy.
Connecting to Your trivia, I remember only
the names of the two ships provided by Costa.
Were they the T/S EUGENIO COSTA and the M/S
DAPHNE? Is it right?
The other two names to our friend Vaccaro!
Bye! Roberto

Hello Patrick and everybody!
The two sister ships of THE AZUR (former EAGLE built in France like the two others) are : REGAL VOYAGER (former MASSALIA)
CRUCERO EXPRESS (former BOLERO)
I had ever seen then several times in the ports of Marseille, Toulon and Ajaccio in the 80' and 90'.
If anyone is intresting about the history of these three ships, i could tell more about then.
Bye.
P.S.:My informations about Regal Voyager and Crucero Express are 3 or 4 years old, so if there names had change nowdays, thanks to Patisck or anyone else to updated informations.

Hello Patrick and Vaccaro!
I'm not sure in replying this week trivia
because my information are old.
Last week I inserted Eugenio Costa because I
remember I read she belonged to Prestige Cruises in the column "next arrivings" of the most specialised newspaper in Italy.
Concerning this week I think the right reply
is : M/S MASSALIA ( I agree with Vaccaro )built in Nantes (France) in 1971 for Paquet (10.513 tons) and M/S DOLPHIN (12.000 tons).
These are the former names of the two ships
( I don't know their actual names ).
I must add that there are a lot of differences in comparison to M/S THE AZUR,
so they cannot be defined really sister ships.
Bye!

Hello Robygen!
It's a real pleasure to share a passion whit you, Patrick or anyone else.
Maybe EUGENIO COSTA was planed to enter in Prestige Cruises, but P.C. has stop activity before (only beetween 91 and 92).
For this week's question i think you make a confusion: DOLPHIN (former ZION then ITHACA in 72 after AMELIA DE MELLO in 66) belonged to Paquet after 78....like AZUR and MASSALIA. But she's not the same:
DOLPHIN: built in Germany (Hamburg) in 1955.
-152.7mX19.8 10195GRT.
MASSALIA: built in France (Nantes) in 1971.
-141.8X21.9 10513GRT. 16000BHP 21kn.
EAGLE: idem in 1970.
-141.8X22.6 11609GRT. 20400BHP 23.3kn.
BOLERO: idem in 1972.
-142.1X21.9 11344GRT. 20400BHP 23kn.
So DOLPHIN and the 3 others ships aren't the sames.
As you can see above there are technicaly minor differences beetween the three "sister ships" even their appearance are a little differente.(i prefer MASSALIA more elegant for my taste).
Bye.

Hello Vaccaro !
I thank you very much for your reply.
I'm very happy too for finding persons like you who have a strong passion for cruise ships. I discovered these pages only few days ago and when I found Patrick's trivia
and your replies I seemed to be a gold - seeker in front of a mine! I love cruising
but I love ships more than the destinations.
If possible, while choosing a cruise, I decide the ship before and then the area.
And I don't want to "marry" the same ship twice in my life! ( I cruised exceptionally
aboard Eugenio Costa twice because I loved her too much ).
Concerning this week trivia I realized I made confusion.
In fact if you seek in Cruise travel page
you can find Canaveral Cruise Company. You must click on it and the name Dolphin IV will appear. In the history of the ship I discovered she belonged to Paquet. However there are two differences in technical datas reported in the page ( built in 1956 and 13.007 GRT ) compared to the ones you gave me. Is this Dolphin the same you described?
If yes, the photo ( beautiful because
one can really understand the profile of 50's - 60's passenger ships' style ) makes me
understand the differences: she is completely
different from the other ships!
Congratulations for your culture and a big
CIAO!
To Patrick: you are silentin these days. Why? Are you on cruise perhaps?!!!

Hello Robygen.
I'm very happy for our discussion.
DOLPHIN IV of Canaveral C.C. is the same DOLPHIN i said before.
There's a little differences of tonnage beetween several sources because there's different ways to calculate it:
-DW:maximum deadweight capacity (in tonnes)
-GRT:gross tonnage -in register tons(100 .cu
ft.)Oslo Convention 1947.
-in Unified Measurement
System (UMS)International
Convention 1969.
-NT:net tonnage -in register tons
-in UMS
(I'll tell you difference beetween UMS and Register tons if you want).
The most usual nowdays is GRT UMS.
Me too i prefer ships than destinations ...but cruising is too expensive for me (my unique real cruise was on NORWAY last year in Mediterranean sea for only 2 days and 2 nights...of course i have choose the ship: SS FRANCE my favourite liner, my dream since more than twenty years.(i'm 33 years old)I have sail beetween
Corsica and France about 45 or 50 times and i have sail on aircrafts carrier during two years.
I agree with you :50's and 60's passengers ships are very beautiful.
Bye or ciao since you are italian and i'm french of the south of France.

Hello Vaccaro and Robygen !
I'm very happy that you're interested so much in this cruise trivia game. I can see that you both have quite good knowledge about the different cruise ships in the world. If ever you need some additional information about the history of any cruise ship, don't hesitate to ask me about it.
The answer of last weeks question is:
MS Seminole Express (ex. Bolero)
and MS Regal Voyager (ex. Massalia).
Vaccaro, you were totally right.
Robygen, sorry but as Vaccaro already explained, MS Dolphin IV was the wrong answer.
Here some details about the ships histories:
MV THE AZUR:
build in 1970/71 at Dubigeon-Normandie Yards as MV EAGLE for General Steam Navigation Company, London, maiden voyage on 18.05.1971.
As from 1.10.1971, P&O Southern Ferries took over the management.
On 19.12.1975, the ship was sold to Paquet French Cruises and named MV AZUR, in 1981 it was converted into a full cruise ship.
16.01.1987: MV AZUR was sold to Azur Transportation Inc.(undependent shipowner for Festival Shipping, Piraeus), renamed MV THE AZUR and chartered to Chandris Cruises, Piraeus.
June 1994: Festival Cruises took over the ship under own management and same name.

MV BOLERO (not to confuse with today's MS BOLERO of Festival Cruises !):
build in 1972/73 at Dubigeon-Normandie Yards as MV BOLERO for Fred. Olsen Lines
24.02.1973: MV BOLEROwas operated under Charter to the German Prinzenlinien.
26.03.1973: MV BOLERO made its first Bahama cruise under charter of Commodore Cruise Lines.
As from January 1976: placed under Charter to Prince of Fundy Line.
09.04.1978 - 14.09.1981: renamed MV SCANDINAVICA, under charter to Stena Line
23.09.1982: renamed again MV BOLERO, under own management of Fred Olsen Lines.
1985: placed under charter to Vaasalaivat under the same name.
15.12.1990: the ship was sold to Color Line and renamed MV JUPITER
30.04. - 30.09.1994 under charter for Viking Line.
October 1994: under charter to Flota Mercante Grancolombiana and renamed MV CRUCERO EXPRESS.
18.09.1996: back to Color Line
14.02.1997 under charter of Empress Cruise Line, renamed MV SEMINOLE EXPRESS, owner is still Color Line.

MV MASSALIA
build in 1971 at Dubigeon-Normandie Yards as MV MASSALIA for Nouvelle Cie. de Paquebots, Marseille, maiden voyage: 05.07.1971
January 1984: sold to Stena Cargo Line, Stockholm and renamed MV STENA BALTICA
11.1984: under charter, renamed MV ISLAND FIESTA.
12.1984: renamed MV SCANDINAVIAN STAR, chartered to SeaEscape Cruises (Scandinavian World Cruises)
March 1990: chartered to Danish DA-NO Line; caught serious fire on 07.04.1990 between Oslo and Frederikshavn, 190 people died.
11.08.1990: laied up in Hull, renamed MV CANDI
February 1994: sold to International Shipping Partners and renamed MV REGAL VOYAGER
May 1995: under charter to St. Thomas Cruises
07.06.1995: under charter to Comarit.

So far details about these three ships.
I'll be onboard MV THE AZUR from 5th until 17th of April, leading a group of 70 people. Maybe one of you would like to continue cruise trivia Europe during this time ?

This weeks question:
Which two 30000 grt ships, built in the 1960's in Italy, feature exactly the same hull but still were never delivered as sisterships because their superstructure was a totally different one from the beginning ?

Hello Patrick and Vaccaro!
Congratulations for all the details about the
three ships.
I hope your cruise aboard The Azur will be
enjoying and a little restful even if you'll
be there for your job.
Don't worry about trivia game : I and Vaccaro
will organize together good questions and if
nobody give the right answers you'll be able
to play when you come back!
Regarding to this week's trivia I suppose the
right answer is:
T/S EUGENIO C., built in 1964 by Cantieri Riuniti dell'Adriatico at Monfalcone , 30.567 GRT and T/S OCEANIC, built in 1963 by the same shipyard, 27.644 GRT.
Bye!

Hello Robygen, Patrick and everybody else!
Patrick: have a very good cruise! (don't work too many!)
Robygen: the question is "...feature EXACTLY the same hull..."
According to you EUGENIO and OCEANIC have the same hull ...but both lenght and beam aren't similar
EUGENIO: 217.4 X 29.3
OCEANIC: 238.5 X 29.4
I know the conception and the shape of the two hulls are very similar (the bows for instance) but if we strictly see the sense of the words of the question -"EXACTLY similar"-,it's not the good answer.
I haven't the good answer (i had the same of your one Robygen, and a other one), but maybe the question isn't precise enought and Robygen is right.
Please Patrick: what do you mean exactly?
Robygen: have you receive my two mails?
Bye.

Hello Vaccaro and Patrick!
How are you? Just after a bad day ( for my job ) a little time dedicated to you and cruise ships is what I need!
To Patrick: Vaccaro is right. I replied Eugenio C. and Oceanic because I didn't read
your question carefully but if not I cannot imagine another possible reply. Are you preparing your cruise? The ship isn't really
beautiful ( ! ) but weather seems to be good
and sea not rough ( here near Genoa during
last days is always sunny, without wind and sea is quite ).
To Vaccaro: I received your exceptional messages and analized all the photos!
Check your mail and you'll find my one!
To Patrick again: we are waiting to your reply!!!
Bye to both of you!
Robygen

P.S.: The idea of a cruise together is really good! The problems, now, are time and...money!

Looks like we have some real ocean Liner lovers out there!! I'm in Minnesota USA it will be fun to chat with other people interested in the liners and cruise ships. I worked on cruise ships as a cruise director, Nordic Prince, Song of America,
*(mvEmpress), Zenith and my favorite, the QE-2. The reason there is a *before Empress is because the ship sank in outside of Singapore. Since this is trivia can anyone tell me what they renamed the mvEmpress when it was repositioned in Singapore? I'll give you a clue: it was originally built in 1965 as the Empress of Australia. As the Empress, being completely rebuilt from the hull up in Greece, she sailed the Mexican Riviera with Starlite cruises in 1991. She was renamed and leased to a company in Singapore, renamed, and then sank in August of 1992. I wasn't on the ship when it sank. She was hit by a fishing trawler in a weak spot. The Captain was the first person off the ship in a lifeboat, before any passengers even knew what was going on. It will be fun chatting with you and reading your responses. I look forward to answering some of those trivia questions.

Greetings fellow ocean liner and trivia fans.

First let me say that this is a great topic and great participation. In fact it has become the longest thread in Cruise Talk.

Since it does include a variety of subjects it might be easier to follow if you made a separate post for each subject. You can still post responses to each subject - but by having each subject as a separate thread more people could see what the discussion was about and participate.

Just a suggestion and thanks again for participating in Cruise Talk.

You're welcome in this trivia game!
And everybody interested will be welcome.
Until now nobody joined the game and we thought to be the only cruise ships and liners lovers in the world!
I'm trying to reply your question about
Empress and I'm sure Patrick and Vaccaro
are doing too.
And be ready: a lot of questions about your
life aboard cruise ships as a Director will
surely cover Minnesota!!!
Bye!
Robygen
