Market Diner (Family Diner)212 695-0415572 11th Avenue(43rd St)Since 1950's
Nice Review (...a bit harsh mind you)...The Market Diner - A haven for “black car” and limo drivers due to the convenient off-street parking, the Market Diner has been around for years. Unfortunately, during the entire time of its existence, it has wallowed in gustatory misery when compared to other similar diners such as the fine Munson Diner further North on 11th Avenue. Eaten on the premises, Market Diner fare is not too bad, since the grease that is liberally used in all dishes, including salads, doesn’t have the chance to congeal before you get to eat it. However, if you order take-out, beware. Menu items considered safe include the Turkey Club sandwich and the Greek Salad, if you remove the brown lettuce bits.

But Joe, if you know of this place, could you not help me out in my question, posted in the Midships Lounge, about the nearby, stay-prior-to-embarking, hotel with the great views (from which I took the SS France photos) nearby?
Namely what is it now?

Do you recall the intersection the hotel is/was located at?
It was maybe a block "downstream" from the liner piers before the new terminal was built. We could look down and see "France" and "QE2" more or less side by side on the day of our embarkation.
It was not a large hotel, but offered a wonderful river/pier-view lounge and dining room. I remember a large, not great, statue of "Columbia" asa a centerpoint in the dining room.
Many family members (now unfortunately deceased) stayed there for the night prior to embarkation, on voyages to Europe. So did my wife and I, but we cannot come up with the name, and NYC directories are no help. Apparently it is now a condo, which is why there is no trace.
In regard to its street location, I remember we could "hang a right" and walk straight to Times Square.....in daylight that is.
You're speaking of the old Sheraton, located at the corner of 42nd and 12th. It is now the Chinese Consulate and from what I am told, quite vile and decrepit on the indside. In the 60's and early 70's, it was THE hotel to stay in pior to embarking on a voyage with it's proximity to the piers and wonderful views. Somewhat of a predecessor to the great Pan Pacific hotel located atop Canada Place in Vancouver.

That's IT!!
Thanks.
