The chairs in the dining room are still from her Kungsholm days! They were built to last.

Mona Lisa now used the different chairs not from Kungsholm.
When She begun her new role as Sea Princess, P & O used the same chairs in the Tasman Restaurant as same as in the Dining Room on the Kungsholm however As I had posted here, It seemed that the chairs came from Canberra's Pacific Restaurant when She was sailed as Sea Princess/Victoria in P & O/Princess days or they bought those chairs from the same manufacturer.

What's so special about these old handcrafted wood panelled interiors when compared to the beauty of todays plastic and chrome delights? Lots, this ship ranks as about the highest quality in terms of her interiors as any ship I have travelled on, the woodwork is stunning and something the likes of which we will never again see. I my view nothing made in the recent past comes close to matching the style and warm of genuine wood panelled ships like the Kungshom.

Yes, I see....my mistake. The chairs are similar, but not quite the same as when Kungsholm.

Must agree on your comments about the Mona Lisa.

She does show the craftsmanship that went in to building passenger ships in the UK having been built at the John Brown shipyard.

Great set of pics. Spent 3 years on her late 80s with Princess. Structure obviously uchanged but many other changes, the etched windows in the dining room seem to be gone, the change of furniture in some areas is disappointing, removal of the teak deck aft around the pool a shame, some areas look almost forgotten about and the poor library seems deserted and much of the display cases etc removed. Horrid new bandstand in the Observation lounge (and the new furniture doesn't look right). Former Carib lounge and casino messed up by P&O. Beautiful enclosed proms have had all the lovely cane furniture and palms taken away. Change of some furniture and removal model sailing ships in former Horizon lounge a shame. Horrid painted deckhead in the Pursers lobby.

Great to see many of the crew areas, accom office, crew mess and bar, even my old office etc. Forward storage areas, galley looks unchanged.

Without doubt one of the nicest ships I worked on - if there was a financially viable alternative for her I would support 100% however I really don't see it, perhaps parts of her could be rescued for a museum or a hotel or even moved onto a new cruise ship ? Princess - how about her library moved to one of your new builds ?

Would love her to visit Durban on her way to India but its a long way round......

I sailed on Sea Princess in November '88, Hong Kong to Singapore - were you serving on her then?? What was your position?? Would I have met you??

A fabulous ship - my first cruise and I've been hooked ever since. Such a shame that this particular ship can't be saved - was in Gothenburg recently and they have something like 26 ships preserved in static roles on the waterfront, none has the presence of 'Kungsholm'!!!!

Cheers

Ken
