For the past ten or so years I have had the honour of being a destination lecturer on a large number of cruise ships sailing to some of the most beautiful ports in the world. In that time and I have heard many stories from passengers and staff about their cruise adventures. Regrettably there are so many that I have not been able to remember them all.

I’m now doing some research for a new project and I am keen to hear your cruising anecdotes etc. about your outstanding (or worst) cruise experience. They could be, for example, about the best port of call you have visited, the most memorable show or entertainer maybe you met your wife or husband on a cruise. The list of possibilities is endless, in fact the odder, funnier, stranger the story the better, even if it’s only funny many years after it happened. I would also like to hear about your favourite cruise line and/or ship, even if they no longer exist. In fact the only thing I’m not looking for are cruise reviews.

Regardless of whether you’re crew, sea of shore based staff a passenger or cruise travel agent whether your stories about your experiences with eccentric passengers or how you sailed through the storm from hell I’d love to hear your story.

If you do a search of all the forums, Malcolm years ago had a thread on "Passengers from Hell"

Thank you for the link. Some of the posts were quite extraordinary. I had been hoping to hear the exact opposite, something extraordinary or something that makes everyone smile. I do hope there are some.

On our honeymoon crossing in 1990 on QE2 my wife met an elderly lady at breakfast one day.

It turns out that she was living on board the ship at the time. She had a small inside cabin and at least one trunk full of formal evening wear.

I think that they would routinely rotate a trunk from storage to provide her with a new set of formal wear. We would see her out and about each evening and she seemed to be having a grand time.

It was Bea Meuller [sp] who died a few years ago. It cost the same to live on the QE2 as it did to be in a retirement home. She did not want 365 days a year of Britain's damp climate. She was a platinum customer and got a special deal not open to the general public. The QE2 was always in warm areas, and got to meet new people every week. Legend has it she did not get along with all of the crew. Ah, different when you only know someone for a week. My retirement gift to myself will be an Cunard World Cruise.

Ok, here's another one. We were doing a Western Caribbean cruise on the Maasdam and ended up getting to know the ship's doctor and his wife.

One evening while having cocktails in the Ocean Bar he told the story of his first time as a ship's doctor on the Rotterdam of 1959. The ship had just left port on the first leg of the world cruise and in the middle of the night he got a call from one of the nurses about a passenger who was ill.

He got up and went to the cabin of an elderly lady but when he got there she was dead. He had no idea of the protocol of dealing with a dead passenger and neither did the nurses. Since it was his first time as a doctor he didn't want to wake the captain at 3am so he consulted with the on duty crew who suggested putting the body in the only refregirated place outside of the kitchen - the florist shop.

The plan was to wake up early and consult with the captain about a more long term solution. But before he could awake and do this the new florist (also his first night on the ship) showed up at the florist shop to get things set up and discovered the body.

As it turned out the doctor just barely escaped having to deal with a secind dead body as the florist almost had a heart attack when he discovered the lady in the floral shop refrigirator.

Thank you for these postings, they are just the type of story I am looking for. If anyone else has one to add please do, they make fascinating reading.

Back in the late 1980s I boarded Canberra in San Francisco. The ship was on one of her line voyages from England to Australia via the Panama, returning to England via the Suez. On a beautiful tropical morning we were anchored off Lahaina on the island of Maui; the palm trees and white sand beaches almost close enough to touch and the towering mountain peaks free of any cloud. A sight right out of movie. As I waited in line at the purser's desk, an elderly English lady, dressed as if headed for a night out at the opera, marched up to the desk and demanded to know what this awful place was. The reply was that it was the beautiful tropical island of Maui, and at that she huffed some disdainful remarked and said "enough of that nonsense, what time does the library open". I don't think she went ashore!
