Royal Caribbean Cruises Espana managing director Belén Wangüemert made the announcement today in a posting on Facebook.com.
"The cruise ship revolution is coming," the Spain-based executive wrote in a triumphant message. "Liberty of the Seas will arrive in Barcelona in 2011."
The announcement comes just weeks after Norwegian Cruise Line unveiled plans to send the soon-t0-debut, 153,000-ton Norwegian Epic to Barcelona for the summer of 2011. Until today, the Norwegian Epic was slated to become the largest cruise ship ever to sail regularly out of a Mediterranean port, but it'll now be trumped by the ever-so-slightly larger Liberty of the Seas.
The two-year-old Liberty of the Seas, which carries 3,634-passengers at double occupancy, is one of three Freedom Class vessels at Royal Caribbean that have debuted over the past five years and features everything from surfing pools to rock climbing walls to ice skating rinks. The Freedom Class vessels were the largest cruise ships in the world until November, when Royal Caribbean unveiled the even larger, 5,400-passenger Oasis of the Seas.
While the Liberty of the Seas is slightly larger than the Norwegian Epic, the Epic will hold more passengers at double occupancy -- 4,200.
Royal Caribbean says the Liberty of the Seas will sail a seven-night itinerary out of Barcelona for the summer of 2011 that the company will reveal in March when bookings open to the public.

Interesting news!
I am keen to see allot more of Europe. Living in Australia I am kind of limited really as there are cheaper and more flights to London making it more realistic to do a round trip from Southampton. As a result of that all other cruise lines miss out that are not doing round trips from England.
I am not keen to fly to Spain or Italy as I cannot speak those languages.
By 2011 I will probably be thinking of cruising to Alaska.

Don't be afraid fore not speaking Spanish or Italian, lot of Europeans don't speak those languages, and they go on Holiday. Last years more and more are learning to speak English.
Its funny location isnt it. If I grew up in Britain I would probably have more grasp on some languages.
I learned Japanese in high school and know enough to get by if I ever get to go there. I topped the class in that language and would have been able to speak it fluently had the school not dropped the subject due to lack of numbers.

Trust me: I have travelled to many countries around the world and just about EVERYONE connected with tourism (Airports, Stations, Hotels, Restaurants, shops and Museums etc.) speaks English.
The likes of Barcelona, Venice, Rome etc. are all very tourist friendly.
