Recent talk about Oceania featuring Ralph Lauren furnishings in their suites has sparked an idea of crossing over a cruise line to a fashion label:

Here is my opinion:

Oceania -Ralph Lauren
Cunard -Burberry
Celebrity -Hugo Boss
HAL -Talbot's
Royal Carribean -Donna Karan
Carnival -Tommy Hilfiger
MSC -Salvatore Ferrigiamo
NCL -Calvin Klein
Costa -LaCoste
Fred Olsen -Brooks Brothers
Silverseas -Prada
Seaborne -Gucci
Princess -JS Bank Clothiers

any other thoughts?

I thought Fred Olsen was more like Littlewoods!

Who gets St Michael's?!

Sorry, British jokes.

Most of this is meaningless to me but my vague impression is that Brooks Brothers is more expensive/pretentious than Fred. Olsen.

Fred. Olsen ... I don't know ... Marks & Spencer? But that would probably be P&O.

It's no so meaningless Doug. It is just branding. I remember threads comparing cruise lines to automobile brands. It is just perception, categorization and differentiation.

Oh,,,,and silly obvious to me, but I would expect Oceania to be Nautica.

Doug, I can understand fashion being meaningless to you.

Tampa Mike, Nautica is garbage, stuff falls apart after one washing. Nautica is more akin to Louis Cruises.

Cunard Burberry?? I think that's considered to be very chav these days... Some keep on saying Cunard has gone downhill but that's taking it to a bit of an extreme.
It would more apply to P&O perhaps. Right now I look forward to the reviews of Ventura chav reunion during the forthcoming Caribbean Christmas cruise ;-)

Considering the cabin I had HAL seems to be more heading toward Ikea, while the public areas would do well for a dutch van der Valk hotel

OD, in the USA Burberry's is still a British Brooks Bros.

Our version of a chav called a 'guido' is usually seen in a BMW, often with huge wheels and thin tires. The ultimate driving machine and executive transport has long been a ghetto status symbol.

Lots of flash and hype on the runway but nothing anyone would own.

Costa=Lacoste???

No way! The perception of the class of the two brands is world aparts here.

Sure there's probably some crossing of the two brands among the passengers, but they must be a tiny minority then.

No it is not a rubbish topic!

Cruise Lines work hard, invest money and manpower to create and maintain their brand image.

It is not trivial since Premier cruises could not come up with a coherent brand image and helped lead to their demise.

It is not uncommon for brands to align with a fashion label. Target stores is Michael Graves, Martha Stewart has a collection at K-Mart. Graves and Stewart brought some flair to brands/stores that were quite dull and a chore to shop in.

This is not a new idea. In the 1970's you could buy a Gremlin car with a Levi's interior. The Lincoln Mark IV had Bill Blass, Givenchy, Pucci, and Cartier editions.

There is a large portion of the buying public when spending on a high ticket item believe that by choosing a fashion label brings them good taste and popularity by their peers.

Oceania was the first cruise line and chose Ralph Lauren.
I think we will find other cruise lines in the future showcasing a chic design label.

I agree.

It was once said, "If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all". Instead of just ignoring the topic thread and not posting any reply, or leaving something nice to say, some folks always have to put in their 'negative two cents worth'. Always. And always negative.

And when you ask a legitimate question they take offense to a non-negative inquiry and respond with vague incoherant answers and then argue with their fellow country men, on and on and on.

Some people are just grumpy all the time. My clients call them grumpy-butts. Grumpy old men. Grumpy Sam. One of the Seven Dwarfs. Ha!

If you dont like a topic thread by all means dont read it and dont respond to it. But dont be a killjoy and always be putting down other peoples topic threads.

Alway someone out there being a Killjoy

I agree it can be an interesting topic.
However, I find it difficult to equate cruise lines with "fashion" brands.
They don't really match, i think.
also; fashion brands (as perhaps cruise lines) are perceived differently in different countries.
I would never equate Carnival Cruise Lines with Tommy Hilfiger, which is here advertised and perceived as a chic American sportswear brand (though here is a shop only with very staid suits etc.). I'd think more along the lines of Azamara or Oceania for TH.

Costa is also no Lacosta, it is more indeed like Hilfiger, perhaps perhaps Club Med...

Carnival is "Levi's" jeans

Yeah. I can compare cruise lines to cars or maybe even stores, but fashion labels is going much more deeply into clothing than I get.

Ouch, that's not very nice to Louis.

I think Louis would be something like a store brand. It's generic and doesn't appear to have a brand identity.

I'm not sure if it's quite the first. COSTA VICTORIA when she was new had suites designed by someone well known, though I can't remember who.

Later I will dig out my COSTA VICTORIA inaugural book and see if it's in there.

It is interesting though that given all the "partnerships" cruise lines have had, fashion labels have been rare. It seems most of these tend to be in the area of food and beverage or spa, though Crystal's casino used to be Caesar's Palace at Sea.

Doug, you get the point and explain it well. Cruise Lines will partner with a chic brand, wether clothing, celebrity chefs such as Jacques Pepin or Michael Roux, spas such as Steiner and Canyon Ranch.

Indeed. Celebrity chefs are probably the most prevalent. Just off the top of my head, Carnival, Costa, Crystal, Cunard, Oceania, P&O and Seabourn have some kind of affiliation with one right now. Celebrity doesn't any more but was most famous in the past for doing so. Royal Viking briefly had one (Paul Bocuse had a restaurant on ROYAL VIKING SUN when she was new), I think NCL also did at one point and Orient Lines originally had Wolfgang Puck. PAUL GAUGUIN used to have one but I'm not sure if she has any more. Regent doesn't have a celebrity chef but it does have an affiliation with Le Cordon Bleu. RCI has "branded" dining in Johnny Rocket's, Seattle's Best coffee bars and Ben & Jerry's ice cream bars. QM2 has the Veuve Cliquot Champagne Bar. HAL prominently advertises relationships with Food & Wine Magazine, The New York Times and Microsoft. MSC goes all-out by flaunting its connections to an actual celebrity, Sophia Loren. It also boasts that its new ships have staircases made of Swarovski crystal. Cunard even had Oxford enrichment lectures on QM2 when she came out. (Few "brands" have endured as long as Oxford, but it wasn't a success.) Princess might have topped it all with its connection to The Love Boat. That was sort of a cart-before-the-horse one, but it's still the only cruise line to have a popular television show named after it.

So they pretty much all do this - and have for a long time. In the old days lines very prominently used photographs of celebrities and dignitaries who sailed with them. It was a huge coup for United States Lines to be able to advertise that it was the choice of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Even the celebrity chef thing goes back to 1905, at least, with the Ritz-Carlton restaurant on AMERIKA. Even the selection of the ship's godparent is about celebrity. In Germany men could name ships, so HAPAG had Kaiser Wilhelm II do the honors. Elizabeth II has named a whole flotilla of ships going back to well before she was Queen. Mme de Gaulle did FRANCE. REGAL PRINCESS was named by Margaret Thatcher, who awarded P&O's chairman a peerage a few years before. Now reality TV stars get invited to do the honors.

And by the way, the designer whose furnishings decorated (I incorrectly used the word "designed") the suites on COSTA VICTORIA was Laura Ashley, though apparently Laura Ashley the person had been dead for over ten years by then.
