I agree. Images of ss Arcadia (1954) against the stunning Alaska landscape are classics.

It seems to be drawing a bit of interest and excitement on P&Os passenger forum. With a bit of luck P&O will keep going there. They really offer the types of cruises that no other "mass market" line offers.

I desperately want to do Alaska. Issues for me is that I will not fly all the way to the US for a 1 week cruise. With a cruise that long that P&O are offering where sectors are more than likely to be booked it changes the whole situation.

Its a real pitty P&O didnt think to stagger out departure dates for a World Cruise allowing it to do a complete circumnavigation and include Alaska that way.

I hadn't noticed that it was starting in April of 2011.

I wonder what that says about Arcadia's ability to compete in P&O's normal spring/summer/autumn trade: 7 & (mostly) 14-night ex-Southampton, to the western Med & Baltic? And, assuming they attract a full ship, how big a proportion of P&O's top-end passengers will do this rather than buy suites for shorter cruises on other ships?

That sounds like I'm being critical. In fact I think it's an interesting venture.

Wow, what a surprising move. If this turns out to be successful, I wonder if P&O will base a ship in Alaska for the summer season. They can offer Fly cruises from the UK.

i do remember having the canberra and oriana(1959) back when i was a kid visiting vancouver as they went back and forth between the UK and australia...on the way there the canberra would visit vancouver usually around december 11 or so....i think the last time we had a P&O ship here was on a world cruise heading east with the oriana(1995) visiting around the first week of march...jeff

Maybe it's not a coincidence that this cruise coincides with the departure of Artemis - she will be the only 'one off' in the fleet so maybe they intend to use her for intinerary rich longer cruises.

Will someone please tell P&O that the ARCADIA (1954) and the SPIRIT OF LONDON both sailed to Alaska in 1974. They seem to think their last sailing to Alaska was in 1970, which, I believe, was handled by ORONSAY that year. Otherwise, great news to see a buff funnel based in U.S. West Coast service after a long absence.

Arcadia even had a refit in Vancouver at the end of 1973. 2 clicks on Google shows her visits to Vancouver in 1974, but P&O can't stop that messing up the marketing ".....following in the wake of her namesake, thirty seven years on, fulfils a longheld ambition for us."... doesn't roll off the tongue so well.

Best not have any Arcadia memorabilia on Azura showing this

Pam

Back in 1973 or 1974 Arcadia spent some time in the graving dock in Victoria. I was able to board her and also walk around the bottom of the dock with her towering above. I think the Spirt of London had her name change in the same drydock.

Went down and saw Arcadia today at Canada Place. Nice, but nowhere near as attractive as the original.

Spirit of London / Sun Princess often drydocked at Victoria at the end of her Alaskan cruising season in the 1970's.

I was on her.
