Travelagentcentral.com:

It seems like just as one threat to the cruise industry dies down, another pops up. Rising fuel prices are back in the news, which means cruise lines will be paying more to gas up their ships. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. said Monday that escalating fuel prices, along with the H1N1 "swine flu" outbreak, will hurt its full-year earnings results.

Since providing its outlook in April, the company's fuel costs have climbed about 45 percent.

Royal Caribbean also announced earlier this month that the swine flu will lower its full-year earnings by about 22 cents per share.

Thestreet.com:

Royal Carribean is once again saying its full-year outlook will be lower than expected, anchored down by high fuel costs and swine-flu outbreak.
The cruise operator previously predicted 2009 profit of about $1.35 per share, with a 10 cents per share deduction for every 10% change in fuel prices.
The company said that since it provided its outlook in April, fuel costs have climbed about 45%. Using this metric, full-year earnings would presumably by 95 cents a share.

Royal Caribbean also announced earlier this month that the swine flu will lower its full-year earnings by about 22 cents per share.

Analysts expect full-year earnings of $1.10 a share.

Royal Caribbean provided this update as part of its report, saying it will start offering $250 million senior notes. Shares in the company remained flat on Monday, closing down by 3 cents, to #13.25.

Earlier in the month rival Carnival(CCL Quote) posted a 32% drop in second-quarter earnings during the quarter, to $264 million, or 33 cents a share, compared with $390 million, or 49 cents, in the year-ago period.

Carnival said the swine-flu pandemic hurt its earnings by 3 cents a share, less than the 5 cents expected.

All I have to say is stay off my back the next time I post anything negative about Carnival. Talk about an agenda.

I have no doubt if I had posted a similar article about Carnival, all the Carni Crusaders would have chastised me for picking on poor, helpless, Carnival.

Ernie I wouldnt get mad if you posted the same thing about Carnival.

I get mad when people bash Carnival and make it seem bad and say other cruise lines are all perfect(R!&#$L) thats when I get mad.

I wouldnt care one bit if you posted something about Carnival losing money that would be an indication of the bad economy.

Over and Out,
Arison

Actually to be fair these results are probably better than expected especially given that because of RCIs highly centralised management and fleet make up they are less agile than others and especially the Pullmantur situation that seems to be bleeding cash. Could be much worse.

The economy, Hedged fuel costs,Swine flu.and of course the cost of building new ships-Oasis-and Solstice class ships. Effect the bottom line for RCL.
We all have our favorite cruise line(s)
We like RCL,Celebrity and Princess. We will probably never sail on HAL or Carnival. Maybe due to their image(IMHO) Old and stuffy and a party boat.

Hi Frosty,

I don't think there's any denying that Carnival has earned a "Party Boat" Reputation over the years. However, I do think they've toned down their on-board behavior somewhat over the past couple of decades.

They certainly aren't the same line that used to sponsor beer-drinking contests and drunken pillow fights (suspended over the pool no less) like I saw on the Mardi Gras back in 1984.

Certainly, they do attract some passengers who want to push the limit, but I think they've taken some prudent steps over the years to keep things to a minimum.

I recently was exposed to one of those measures as they wouldn't let (at least initially) let my 18 year old daughter stay in my 21 year old daughter's cabin because neither of the girls were 25...which seems to be Carnival's new minimum age policy now.

Trying to steer this barge back on topic, in this economy I would be pretty happy to see any profits out of RCCL, I guess the move to lower rates worked for them.

They would have loved me then! I was only 20 years old when I did my first cruise on my own for 49 nights! I did a share with stranger thing so I would not have to pay single supplement, I had to share with a WWII veteran, and he was good company.

As for this topic there is one thing that I hate is that people trying to blame the economy, flu, fuel charges on their losses. Thats life you have got to expect things like that, everything cant be calm sailing. Even everybody's household budget sufferes from world events and disasters so why should cruise lines expect any different.

Looking at some other reports the loss of profit was caused by high fuel prices and swine flu.

It looks like it wont get any better for RCCL considering oil last time I checked was between 80 and 90 dollars a barrell, Oasis is coming and it WILL get worse until oil goes down. I know the Royal Raders will attack me but who cares.

Over and Out,

From CERA:

Oil prices are expected to retreat back to the high $50s during the summer as the US dollar strengthens from recent lows, experts of the British Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA) consulting association believe.

As I said on another forum a while ago. Mr Stephan will find his investor and will buy the smaller RCI ships. RCI will be renamed into RCV and will keep the Voyager, Freedom and Oasis Class.

The debt load will force Mr Fain to do so. It is the only right thing to do.

Actually that age policy has been in effect (if I am not mistaken) for at least 15 years. I remember it being an issue when two people who were both under 25 wanted to book their honeymoon. It also came up a number of times after that. This was specifically on RCCL (then) - but I am pretty sure it is an industry standard. Is it insurance related?

Oil is @ $62/barrel-down almost $10 in a month . I think that the $65 figure and above kicks in the surcharge. However most cruise lines hedge their fuel supplies.locking fuel 6 months to a year ahead of time.
I wonder if this goes along with gas stations raising gas cost because of holidays ,some small incident somewhere, etc. You know the drill. Gouging !!!!
I can see after the Summer gas going down below $2 a gallon if the economy is still in the doldrums.
