Today it was announced that Indian Ocean Cruises "Ocean Odyssey" will cruise from Mauritius!!

She will arrive next month for her first season and will cruise to the surrounding Islands.. Shes too gorgeous...

Costa has also announced that they are replacing Costa Marina with Costa Europa for 14 night Sailings for the 2008-09 season,, Costa expects 22 000 cruises this season compared to 11 000 of last..

Finally the Indian Ocean is getting some cruising action on a larger scale,, lets hope they send some more to Durban though!!!

Ocean Odyssey is abandoning the Lakshadweep Islands then? A lovely destination but from a few comments it appears there hasn't been much of a payload strange when there is no single occupany supplement, but guess the airfare is the problem. The website here hasn't been updated for beyond April.

We also have Sun Princess cruising from Fremantle next year and this includes a 46 night cruise through Asia, India, down the African coast and then back across the Indian Ocean.

Hi

It has been announced in Australia that Indian Ocean Cruises are decommisioning their ship Ocean Odyssey, at the end of the month, due to the high maintenance costs of operating her.

As the company have just renewed their exclusive contract for visiting India's Lakshadweep chain of Islands they are looking for a newer and slightly larger ship to replace Ocean Odyssey.

In other words Ocean Odyessey will be staying in India permanently - just further round the coast ?

What a shame a really pleasant looking little ship. The are going to struggle to find something only a bit bigger and more modern, maybe one of the older R yachts although I don't think any are available.

It is a problem with type of ship though, same with Royal Star, to really make them pay you really have to spend the cash upfront, new power plant, new plumbing. really update the ship throughout and go the whole luxury yacht thing to get the fares that make it work, both cruise areas that attract that market and they should be able to do it, but you can't charge 5 star prices for 2 star ships, so either they need to look deeply in their pockets or they will continue to struggle. Both Jason and Royal Star are vintage lovely ships - seagoing Orient Express's, lack of balconies etc is not a problem - take a page out of Heberian Cruises book and the n increase your fares by at least double or triple, you then can afford the ships and they will be superb.

Well, "easyCruiseOne" is on the market, Mike. But then she will likely require a hefty investment to bring her back to cruise ship standards.

Best,

A lot of money was spent on refurbishing OCEAN ODYSSEY and it would surprise me if she was sold to breakers. I hope the "high maintenance costs" relate more to the area she sailed in rather than to the operation of the vessel itself.

It would be wonderful to see her sailing in the Greek Islands again or perhaps the Adriatic coast.

Read the Mauritius press release. She is going to "operate in the port as a hotel and fine cuisine restaurant, apart from making a few short voyages to nearby islands". I would guess therefore the cost of fuel is the problem where she is at present with the long run; she is probably quite thirsty? Pottering around Mauritius and a few nights aboard in one spot sounds excellent.
