Can anyone tell me the history surrounding Ibero Cruceros?

They are getting the Celebration next year. Will there be any significant refit done?

Also, when is it expected that Holiday or perhaps also Pacific Sun will go to Ibero Cruceros?

Corey,

Iberocruceros is a new joint-venture between Carnival Corporation & plc (holding 75% through its Società di Crociere Mercurio unit) and Orizonia Corporacion (holding 25%), owners of Iberojet Cruceros.

Given that competition from Royal Caribbean Cruises (i.e. Pullmantur Cruises) is pretty stiff in Spain, I guess it won't be long until we see "Holiday" moving to Iberocruceros, as well. As for "Pacific Sun", I guess she is going to stay with P&O Cruises Australia for now, i.e. as least until that brand gets another ship.

What's interesting is that P&O Cruises has sold "Pacific Star" (ex "Tropicale") to Pullmantur Cruises so that "Grand Celebration" and "Pacific Star" (to be renamed "Ocean Dream") will be direct competitors operating from Barcelona, next summer.

Best,

Raoul

Recently, I talked to some one that works onboard Carnival ships. He heard that Carnival tried to transfer HOLIDAY to Iberojet, but they refused to take her, thus CELEBRATION going there.

I have a feeling HOLIDAY will be sold off.

Is there someone who had sail on her recently (David if I remember correctly) ? What is the current condition of her hardware ? Would she be suitable for another line ?

Interesting. Did he say why he thought Iberocruceros wouldn't take her?

I know Carnival was very keen to get rid of PACIFIC STAR with her well-known mechanical troubles, but I hadn't heard anything especially bad about HOLIDAY.

The person I talked to was Dan Polulak (RANGERVR) who worked onboard her for a few days in mid December. He said that things were held on with duct tapes, dirty, and the ship vibrates.

Not sure if he has left for his next assignment, but perhaps he can add to this.

Hey everyone,
Not too sure what I can provide you, but I recently worked onboard the Holiday, but am usually onboard the Inspiration. I was too very intrested in what they were going to do with the Holiday, as it was odd they were selling the newer ones before the older.

I spoke with a friend of the company who has worked on the Holiday for a long contract previously, and is a in a high position onboard ships, and I was informed that the reason why the Holiday has not been sold to Ibero Cruceros is because of her condition.

Holiday as we all know has seen better days, her plumbing is very problematic, and paired with general wear and tear, and probably not the best upkept.

I was told that when Ibero Cruceros came onboard both the Holiday and Celebration, they refused to purchase the Holiday because of this.

I am not positive, but its more of a company grapevine thing, so dont be surprised if she is sold to them. Holiday still is a great ship, just Carnival is using duct tape to fix things- literally!

Weird to consider that Carnival, wwhich owns 75% of Iberojet isn't in position to force them to accept the Hollyday in their fleet... I wonder who would be likely to buy her...

While Holiday is in the Carnival fleet any breakdowns etc with her has a minimal effect on overall income etc. And she is well suited indeed designed for CCL. At IC she will have to be significantly upgraded to meet the standard required, I get the impression they are more RCI than CCL and if there were mechanical issues being in a smaller fleet the financial impact would be very significant for them - as was/is Pacific Sky and Pacific Star. I am not sure how long Artemis will last with P&O, perhaps she would be a good candidate for them.

Mike,

I visited "Artemis" two weeks ago and I must say I was deeply impressed by her. She would be a wonderful addition to Phoenix Reisen's fleet given "Maxim Gorkiy's" removal from service next fall.

Best,

Raoul

At the moment, no definite decission has been take about which ship will join. Rumours say rightnow that Costa Victoria could join the fleet.

BUT these have been going on for a few months. The next one will join in 2009. I might know it first.

I will keep you informed.

Wow, Iberocruceros is going to have a disjointed fleet. I hope their fleet consists of a buildup for refurbished Carnival ships (ie. TROPICALE to COSTA TROPICALE conversion).

Am I the only one to think COSTA VICTORIA is much more luxurious compared to the existing Ibero fleet?

I cannot see why Iberojet should want any CCL ships. Holiday or Celebration are surely 2nd rate to Grand Mistral and Grand Voyager. With 2 newish ships they don't want ships 10 years older which have no additional benefit ammenity or size wise & may not be in the best condition with all that entails.

Costa Victoria would be a nice one though.

Dan - Thanks for the update. I'm surprised to hear she's in such poor condition. I would not expect Carnival to let her reach such a state.

Of course this brings up the question of whether CELEBRATION is in much better shape, and if so why one ship was allowed to deteriorate and the other not... Such are the mysteries of life .

Pascal - It is quite possible that the JV agreement between Carnival and Iberojet requires Iberojet's approval for certain things e.g. changes in the fleet. I have no idea if this is the case but it would hardly be unprecedented if it were.

Raoul - Was your visit to ARTEMIS before or after her recent refit?

I still haven't been able to find out just what was done to her. Rumors were that it might be quite substantial but the P&O web site does not indicate so.

Most people who I have spoken to who have been on her as a P&O ship have been disappointed so it is refreshing to hear something positive.

Pam - I know little about the Spanish market but if Iberojet was differentiated by having newer/better ships than Pullmantur, the addition of CELEBRATION might undermine that.

Right now it has two very modern ships and CELEBRATION will need to be totally gutted in order not to look very dated next to the current two.

Good point Pam makes. Both Voyager and Mistral are relatively new, modern ships and very similar decor wise. While not state of the art (no alternative dining rooms and few balconies) Celebration even with a good refit will in no way enhance the fleet and product. Costa Romantica would be a nice addition, using IC as a dumping ground for old tonnage would be a mistake and lessen the difference between Pullmantur and IC, frankly I am surprised they have not considered new builds.

Artemis is now 23 years old, the point I was making is that with Ventura 1 and 2 en route she is starting to look a bit like a poorer sister as she was i the Princess fleet, no select dining, very small cabins etc. which also means less revenue for P&O. IC might well prove to be a nice home for her to serve out her twi-light years, of course I would rather P&O give her a huge refit and bring on board the extra restaurants, more balconies etc all of which is feasible but expensive, I just don't think they will and frnkly if they did she would be better off back with Princess. Bear in mind she was designed to have a 30 year life span. IMHO she looks horrid with a buff funnel anyway not that the IC starfish would look much better !

I heard Grand Mistral and Grand Voyager are just leased and not purchased outright.

I was aboard after her refit, Doug.

As it was my very first time onboard her, I can only rely on what our guide onboard told us. The one thing that was completely rebuilt is the Horizon Lounge, while most other changes have apparently not been particularly spectacular. A handful of staterooms were added, including two superb balcony cabins on A Deck.

The ship's general condition was excellent from what I was able to see. IMHO the astroturf around the Riviera Pool should have been replaced but other than that sing of wear were minimal. I was surprised that it is still so obvious (particularly through the carpets) that she used to be a Princess ship.

IMHO she would be a superb addition to the Phoenix fleet and I understand that did take a look at her so maybe there's hope.

Best,

Raoul

PS: I do agree with you about the funnel, Mike. It looks terrible.

They aren´t leased but property. The lease company bellongs to Iberocruceros. A kind of tricky move, which I can´t see any adventage.

I suppose it´s more viable than a direct purchase.
