see P&O Press Release

it looks as though the cost cutting has continued at P&O Aus with them not wanting to spend money on blue and yellow paint!

instead they have opted for a crisp white paint job for their new image. I guess they are trying to start afresh and rebuild their reputation after a few years of bad publicity.

heres a summary of the press release

quote:
P&O Cruises Acting Managing Director Dean Brown said Pacific Dawn would have a classic white hull, while the cruise line’s distinctive sun logo would be displayed on a white background on the ship’s funnel, as well as its bow

Mr Brown said P&O Cruises’ name would appear on the side of the ship, along with the ship’s name

...the 46,000-ton Pacific Sun and the 35,000-ton Pacific Star - would be repainted with the new livery during the ships’ scheduled dry docks in 2008

Maybe it's just me, but I hate the term 'super liner'.

To me there are 'Cruise Ships' and 'Ocean Liners'. I do not recognise the hybrid term 'super liner'.

What the homepage heading says:

"Super New Look for Australia's First Superliner"

What there really saying is:

"Fresh clean start for Austraila's biggest hand me down yet"

like the UK, Oz will only get big new ships when the market grows.

It is only in the last few years than the American lines have sent Britain their state-of-the-art ships, apart from NCL who are still sending us 'Norwegian dream'.

The website already features the new look under the SHIPS icon.

Well it does make life much easier to transfer them to and fro when you don't have to paint them Municipal Blue and Puke Sunny Yellow all the time, a colour scheme while distinctive I never liked. The new one is at least easier, why though don't they use the same P&O sun logo as the new UK one - just paint it on upside down !!!!

Having just looked at the website and deck plans, other than a new name, logo and moving the casino to the disco - is there anything new about the Regal / Dawn, to me it appears identical - they havn't even bothered to draw their own deck plans they are using Princess's. I thought they were customizing it for Aus. Well I suppose as you say it makes it cheaper.

All they will do to customize the dawn is introduce australian dollars and wack a P&O sticker over any princess logos throughout the ship!

seriously though, its good to see larger/newer tonnage joining P&O Aus. Lets hope a 'new' build is not too far away.

hi there

i came across the word super liner too

how strange to name a ship, 16 years old a super liner

is it this easy to fool the Australian clientele or is the marketing strategy that symplistic

i fear the latter as for the new livery they are talking about, just another lick of paint

Let's not forget that Carnival Cruise Lines touted the term "SuperLiner" in the mid-1980s for their HOLIDAY-Class (of which PACIFIC SUN, ex. JUBILEE, is one.) These were the biggest new cruise ships built to date.

P&O Australia will need a lot of stickers to cover all the Princess logos displayed on the ship: there are Princess logos almost everywhere !

Personally I believe that as the Pacific Dawn she will look much better in the new P&O Australia "soft" livery. The Regal Princess has a classic profile, and too much colours will probably ruin her. The former Crown Princess was literally ruined outside with the strange liveries adopted by A'Rosa Cruises, Aida Cruises and Ocean Village Holidays !

Looking at the poorly retouched images of the Pacific Star and the Pacific Sun I can say that I don't like the new livery on these ships. For me P&O Australia should leave both of them with the old livery !

Pacific Dawn should be marketed as an upscale cruise ship à la Pacific Princess.

Pacific Star and Pacific Sun are older mass market cruise ships !

I agree with Italian Cruiser. PAC SUN and STAR should be left with the same livery, marketed as "fun ships" while PACFIC DAWN is marketed with the white livery.

I guess PACIFIC STAR will look alright in white as we have seen her in the COSTA livery.

Shed the fun ship image, shed the fun colour scheme. That's all they're doing. And as a bonus, it just so happens to save them costs in paint as well.

I think Carnival Corp is trying to link their Australian products more closely together. P&O, Princess, and P&O Australia share one website, and now their ships will be closer in appearance--all white.

With Pacific Dawn the gap between P&O Australia's fun ships image and P&O/Princess premium product is closing. That probably explains the simplification in livery.

In the end I'm not sure this is a good idea. Eventually, as the Aussie market continues to expand, there will need to be clearer branding. Moderate, premium, and luxury segements will need to be defined. As things stand, they are getting blurred. Carnival Corp probably won't feel this pressure, however, until other lines move into the market and bring competition.

Would it also be true that for 2 reasons P&O Aus are trying to change the both their image and the image of cruising in Aus generally - by going a bit more upmarket

1. due to the continued and repeated bad publicity the fun ship concept has received, ie to much alcohol, underage drinking, sex etc.

2. as more Aussies cruise both with P&O and others they begin to expect more from the product P&O delivers

3. with the introduction of potentially more upmarket hardware they simply need to in order to leverage a better ticket price - is PD's fares slightly higher than the other ships ?

I havent done the maths, but I'm sure as usual 'slightly' probably isnt the appropriate word to use.
