They probably spent ages planning the whole QM2/QE2 arrival in Sydney yesterday, spending on fireworks, press, etc. and while Sydney absolutely went bullistic about the 2 Queens, I felt they missed a golden chance to take the free marketing.

They should have promoted the concept of cruising to the general public alongside the 'royal' visit, especially cruising in the local market. Why spend so much money on QM2/QE2 promo, when the next time Australians would be able to get on a world voyage is a whole year away at probably outrageous prices again? Why not promote the fact that cruising is already here with P&O Australia and Princess cruises, as well as HAL? The link between P&O and Cunard to the public eye is barely existent at all, P&O Australia dont even mention the visit of the Queen's on their website. All this especially considering they should try and push Pacific Dawn's case.

Just my 2 cents anyway

Couldn't agree less. This was a Cunard event, not a Carnival one. Much of their success as a corporation has been due to the fact that they keep their BRANDS distinctly separated.

give us a break the ships have been in tv newspapers non stop for the last 2 days how stupid do you think the average aussie is. im sure they can work out for themselves that if they cant afford a cunard cruise they can always go on a p&o ship or equivelant

Good point.

To an extent the Queens have caught the pess's imagination, so Cunard or Carnival are not going to fight it. Even most UK newspapers are carrying images.

However I'm sure that the visit of the Queens will raise an interest in all Australian cruising.

I thought the idea of having Pacific Sun or Pacific Princess departing Wharf 8 at 6PM and then sitting in the harbour for the fireworks and meeting of the Queens before the beginning of a cruise would have been a terrific way to start a cruise.

Oh it definately has! However, they keep promoting that it costs up to $AUD500 000 for 2 people on this cruise...and it starts from like $AUD28000; immediately most people here would think they could no way afford to go on a cruise. They should have promoted the fact that there is a much cheaper local cruise market.

If someone wow's you with something that the average person would only take up if they won a ticket in a competition (due to cost), is that effective marketing?

You know the day before QM2 arrived I saw Pacific Sun just leaving Sydney harbour...planning departure just one day later would have been ideal. After all i believe Silver Cloud was at DH on that day

Hi Folks

We were on the QM2 when she sailed into Sydney - what a welcome! We felt very sorry for the Silver Cloud as she sailed in while the QM2 was docking. No-one took any notice of her at all.

I think that the meeting of the Queens was a great promotion for cruising in Australia after all the bad press P&O have received here over the last few months. A lot of non cruisers in Australia think, from media reports about a specific incident, that all cruise ships are like the Pacific Sky and so they are now reluctant to take a cruise. The welcoming of QM2 and QE2 in Sydney highlighted cruising at its best so I'm sure all cruise lines would be very pleased with the great press coverage they received.

I know that the top prices for a cruise on QM2 were mentioned but some did give the more realistic prices that most passengers were paying.

Actually thats a very good point, but I think the impression of a cheap ship (P&O Australia) vs expensive ship (QM2, QE2, very expensive!) has been further cemented...ie. if you're not willing to spend lots of money, you'll get a Pacific Sky product and experience.

You're quite right Pungpui. I think that cruising is still in the early stages in Australia. I am sure that most people in Australia think that all P&O ships are like Pacific Sky and Pacific Sun ( and I'm not knocking those ships as they are very successful ships in Australia filling a particular market niche.) However, as we know there all all sorts of ships out there satisfying particular market niches but it has been only the last few years that a lot of cruise lines have "discovered" the Australian market. Now they need to educate the Australian public and give us some good deals.

On the San Francisco/Australian leg of the QM2 World cruise there were more Aussies than any other nationality. We have seen this again and again on the Australian segments of the QE2 World Cruise.
