On one of our cruises, we were seated with a family that had requested kosher food. When they brought it out, it looked to be not a whole lot more appealing that a TV dinner. I'm not sure what they were expecting, or how it all worked out, since they moved to another table (they had requested a table just for their family, and ended up at a table for 8 with us strangers).

My question is, what sort of food and preparation would someone who requested kosher meals expect aboard a ship. Any idea just where such meals come from, etc?

An another cruise, we had one member at our table who was getting vegetarian meals, and I have to say that they looked appetizing and appealing.

Kosher meals on cruise ships are typically pre-prepared and packaged shoreside; you are right in that they are basically TV dinners.

I don't know of any cruise ships with Kosher kitchens, able to prepare Kosher meals on board. (This was done on a few ocean liners in the old days.) If someone was expecting freshly-prepared Kosher meals, they would be quite disappointed these days.

Crystal Cruises has a kosher cuisine offered.
High end cruising has a strong Jewish demographic compared to the general population.

The defunct Greek Line had kosher dining rooms.

Most modern orthodox Jews in a non-kosher situation will order vegetarian dishes. Every cruise I have taken has at least 2 vegetarian entrees on the menu.

Before the days of multiple dining options with most cruiselines: Each night of the cruise was a different ethnic cuisine with the waiters in costume.

What is it that Jews are not allowed to eat? Shellfish, pork and dairy cannot be served with meat, right?
