Is there any cruise line that offers cruises of Argentina (more then just Buenos Aires and Ushuaia) ? Argentina is a extreamly beautiful country and it seems to me that would be a great cruises destination. I have never been there but I want to go cause I am part Argentine, and I though cruising would be a cool way to eventually go.

QM2 will be cruising down the east coast of South America in January, 2007 for a segment of her World cruise but will not be stopping over in Argentina. She is docked for only one day in Rio after seven sea days which seems odd to me and then sails past Argentina. Maybe Argentina is being avoided because of the past (and present?) issues over the Falklands Islands.

Being a passionate fan of Cunard and then being Argentine makes it really hard to choose a side for that war. I love the QE2 but I also love Argentina.

Also the two countries seem to be OK with each other.

Anyways are there any cruises to Argentina?

I thought the UK was still a little sore about the invasion and the sinking of their ship(s)? Remember, the Argentinian navy was trying to sink QE2 (and Canberra) and called her the 'Black Slug' or something like that.

CF

You can love your country but hate or disagree with the government policy makers.

I was in Denmark the summer of the Falkland war and my brother had his QE2 crossing cancelled.

Most around the Horn cruises makes a few stops in Argentina. That's where we saw the penguins in Puerto Tombo.(Mille cruise)Look at Celebrity site for details. Besides Argentina you can visit Uruguay right across the LaPlata river. Go to Punta del Estes, a really nice resort town
I would suggest you make arrangements for a few days before or after your cruise, of course depending which itinery you go on.
Leather goods are the best value while in Argentina, you can get some fine coats, jackets that will be tailor made. I bought a shooting vest for skeet shooting which is awesome. I also bought a jacket made from antelope.( really nice) I asked a few leather stores here in the US if they carried a coat like this and they said"NO" to expensive.
In Montevideo,Uruguay they have a leather store (Marios)which has vans which will take you to the store and back to the ship- no charge. That's where I got the antelope jacket. This is an approved cruise store.
If you want the name of the store in Buenos Aires e-mail me directly for info, I'll send you the link to their web page.My address--- raf4rc@hotmail.com

I don't agree with many things going on in Argentina, but in the case of the falkland islands I kind of side with Argentina. I don't think they should have invaded but I do belive that the islands are more rightfully Argentina's. No offense to our friends in England. Like I said above I love Cunards and P&Os ships so much its hard for me to side with anyone.

Frosty 4, your right Argentinas leather goods are some of the best in the world. The steak there is also the best in the world, though I have never been there to taste it I heard that. Those store you talk about sound cool. Were they really expensive, if you don't mind me asking,? If they are they probably aren't for me.

If I ever go on a cruise there I would want to visit the entier country as the country is one of the most beautiful in South America. They have some increadible rain forests in the north and Iguazul Falls and then the deserts in the central area and then Patagonia in the south. It so beautiful there.

Cunard Fan,
The leather jacket and vest cost between $250-$300 US. Not bad considering they would cost double or more here.No tax either.Remember they are tailor made.
As for Argentina it has a varied climate. When we went to Puerta Madryn it was very desert like ,once out of town the highway ends and turns into very bumpy, dusty and muddy roads. (When we went to see the penguins near Puerta Tombo.) The buses are OK but the air conditioning was poor!!
Keep in mind that South America as far as cruising is concerned is only a few years old. You tender in to most ports.
In Buenos Aires, the tango show is a must see. We picked up a video of the place we went for dinner and the show. We also went to a working ranch(really a farm) where gauchos wore the tradition dress and performed excellent horsemanship. Had a dinner there with lots of beef and wine. It was a very HOT day when we went. 90s!!
Ironically they don't consider Eva Peron too highly although we did see the cemetary where she is buried and the goverment house(pink) where she gave speeches. I would recommend the around the Horn cruise although "The Horn " is just a big rock!!! And NO it's not rough going around as seen in too many movies. Remember you go there in the Summer. In winter-that's another story.

Check out the leather shop web page. You can order from the US but shipping is extra.

I usually don't post store or merchants but this one is VERY GOOD!!!

I was in Argentina on a Stella Oceanis cruise in my teen years.

Buenos Aires is beautiful and charming. The colorful La Boca nieghborhood is one of my favorites. The quality of the beef is incredible.

Montevideo is quite nice too with a lot of Baroque architecture.

Oceania Cruises: 30 years later has the ambience of the old Sun Line.

Speaking of....

I just returned from two weeks in Brazil and Argentina, cruising down from Rio to BA on the Insignia. Stayed three days in BA after the cruise.

BA is a wonderful city, reminds me a lot of NYC with its varied neighborhoods, diverse population and eclectic cultures. I could spend days in the San Telmo section, and the best dining is actually found in the outlying residentisal district of Las Carnitas.

Cunard Fan - the only beef (couldn't resist the pun!) the Argentineans have with the Falklands War is with the government and the military leaders that sent thousands of Argentinean sons into harm's way and ultimately, to their untimely deaths.

The vast majority of the cruises to Arentina are the 'around the horn' cruises withn stops in Ushuaia and Puerto Madryn. I do believe Celebrity will be calling at Camarones and Comodoro Rivadavia in Arentina in 2008.

QM2 bypasses BA because of the tricky navigation into the harbor.

Tim

What, you mean Eva really did make speeches from the balcony of the Casa Rosada?

The best man at my wedding had a Panamanian and Argentinian background. I have always wanted to get down there to see some of the stuff he told me about. Unfortunately, I studied the wrong language in college.

When it comes to territorial disputes, a lot of that stuff goes back so far that no modern mind can make sense of it.

Next year the Costa Victoria will make cruises to BUE and the "Tierra del Fuego" anual cruise, but the only argentinians ports that she stops are BUE and Puerto Madryn. I think that MSC will put the MSC Sinfonia only for argentinian cruises, because i saw in the 2007/2008 folder that there are not any cruises from her departing Rio or Santos, only the transatlantic crossing finishing in BUE. Some years ago Costa used to visit "Mar del Plata" and i think that next year she will do it again because Costa Classica will make 10-11 night cruises to the south and to northeast.

Italianliners

PS: Since i was 5 i went at least once a year to BUE by ship, but in some years i went 3 times. Now i'm 16, you can do the count...

What language did you learn. In Argentina Spanish is the main language but Itallian, French, English and even in some cases German are spoken. For exsample in Argentina you don't say adios you say ciao, which is Itallian.

My study (and degree) were in French. Oddly enough, I met my best man when I was attending college in France. Today, he's a librarian (possibly head librarian?) at one of the University of California campuses. Riverside, I think.
