Carnival today confirmed that it has held discussions with the largest tour company in Germany, TUI AG (TUIGn.DE) and that those discussions are continuing. Carnival denied the reports that have appeared in various German media claiming that the talks were related to the exclusive distribution of any of Carnival's cruise products.

In today's announcement Carnival said that the company's very successful AIDA brand, which serves the German market, is completely satisfied with its present distribution model and appreciates the support that it receives from its travel agent partners.

Should current discussions lead to an agreement with TUI AG, Carnival said that it will immediately announce details of the agreement. However, until that time, the company will not comment further.

Now is TUI the same TUI which the UK's Thomson holidays and cruises are a part of?

I didn't know Carnival can even get larger! Don't they have enough monopoly in the cruise industry and in Europe?

So is Carnival thinking of buying them and does that mean Carnival might own Hapag and Lloyd? I hope not! They already are starting to take away P&O and Cunards identity! I don't want them to have another classic line.

If this deal is about Carnival aquiring TUI cruise lines (Thomson Cruise and Hapag Lloyd), I sincerely hope the European commission won't allow it for obvious anti-monopoly reasons. Having one single corporation controling 75% of one market is always a very bad thing.

Who is actually bigger - TUI or Carnival? Mind you that TUI owns Hapag Lloyd as a whole - this is MORE than the cruise line.

The fact is Carnival is much bigger (and experienced) than TUI in the Cruise industry. TUI might consider its cruise divisions not profitable enough and may be willing to get rid of them in exchange of a good price.

In the cruise industry - yes - but as a whole? Whether Carnival is more expierienced can be discussed - as said, Hapag Lloyd is owned by TUI....

TUI as a whole have many more vessels around than Carnival, but a mere splash when it comes to cruising. I doubt very much the monopolies commission would agree to Carnival buying out TUI's cruising operation. I would have thought a dead duck from starters, but money talks.

Which are all the companies that Carnival owns today? You can count with travel companies if they own too, but they should have one.

I thought Cunard is based in Valencia, CA along w/Princess? Maybe this was updated before the transfer to the States.

I doubt the Euro Commission will allow it to happen.

I hope RCI comes in and snatches TUI away from Carnival - payback of the P&O Princess bidding war.

I would say at least twice bigger... (even if I've no precise numbers, this has to be checked)

Is it also a possibility Carnival is trying to dump Seabourn to TUI?

Probably not--CCL has just committed to building more tonnage for Seabourn, which has begun to yield more profits for the Company.

Who owns it? I did'nt think Carnival sold anything that made money unless this division was in the red.

Well they transfered the A'Rosa Blu to Aida as the Aida Blu, though now she is becoming Ocean Village II. I think that they really did not see the synergy with the river cruisers. I can understand that, I don't see it as their market either...
