Can anyone give me any information about Mal de Debarquement, the constant feeling of swaying motion that you feel after a cruise. I have had this for two years and am having a hard time finding info. The cruise lines and their docs must have some info to share.

It's natural to feel the motion of a ship (or even an airplane) after reaching land, but the sensation usually goes away in a day or two. If you're suffering these effects for two years now, it has nothing to do with being on a cruise!

What does your doctor say about this? Please get yourself checked; no one on an Internet board is going to be able to help you on this matter!

Thanks, I've been to 10 doctors, had many tests and don't get any answers. Actually, I have spoken to people who have had this for 20 years after a cruise. I just thought that maybe someone on this type of forum had found an answer.

Mal de Debarquement Syndrome (MdDS) is recognized as a rare disorder with mild to profoundly disabling persistent sensations of movement. For most folks, when they leave the boat, this sensation may exist for a few hours to days. For those who develop MdDS, the sensation continues. Associated symptoms are imbalance and cognitive impairment.

The cause(s) of MdDS remain unknown. Most clinical tests (e.g., of ears, brain) will return normal results. Usually, the symptoms are reduced when in motion (e.g., riding in a car). Unfortunately, there is no specific drug therapy that reduces symptoms, however, some people are benefitted by anti-anxiety drugs. Vestibular therapy is sometimes useful. Because MdDS is uncommon, most doctors have not heard of it so most patients spend much effort locating someone who can diagnose.

The MdDS Foundation (a non-profit) provides a list of health care providers who are familiar with MdDS. This organization is working to help find the cause and cure for this often debilitating disorder.
