I guess he (like all the rest) could have 'fallen' overboard while drunk. Are these passengers sitting on the rail while drunk or are they jumping? I guess that unless the cruise lines install cameras near all rails we will never know.

I think it has alot to do with them being drunk. I remember the Pacific Sky operating out of Brisbane a passenger got drunk and witnesses saw him jump overboard. He was never seen again.

Is there a line where they have never lost a passenger?

for example I always go with P&O and Princess - I am curious now if they have ever lost anyone.

What about the more up market lines have there been any reports of missing passengers from them or is it just mass market cruising where you pay under $100 per night?

Sutho........
I do know of a crew member who disappeared from Canberra on one of her WC's. I mentioned this in another post. He was a greatly disliked band or orchestra member and was supposedly put over the side late one night. This is not the same as a drunken mishap, but a man did die. It is also possible that some of these "drunk" young people were "helped" over the side.....who will ever know?

During the last ten years, P&O have lost 3 and Princess 4 passengers.

It does require some effort to jump overboard from a cruise ship. I am satisifed that those safety rails are good enough to stop anyone falling off.

I am 5'7 (173cm)tall weigh 90kg (14stone) and am of athletic build and very fit. With my size I would have to put some effort in to make it over those guard rails alone. When people are drunk and coordination is lacking tasks like making it over guard rails is harder.

I am not saying it is impossible, all I am saying that it requires a bit of effort and that it cannot happen accidentally.

You could probably throw someone over no problem.

Does everyone agree with me that the railings are safe enough to prevent people accidentally falling off?

I agree they do provide protection, but if you are drunk and try to go over and do something stuipid it isnt hard to get over them. Push up and lean over and you can fall, get a running start trying to do something crazy and try to get over yeah your off. But if your just acting normal you wont get over them to easily.

...with a little help...

They found that DiPiero and his friends concealed liquor in mouthwash bottles and brought a bottle of rum in their luggage. The friends videotaped themselves drinking the alcohol Sunday afternoon, and DiPiero continued drinking until midnight, investigators said.

I hope they (the TV media) include this fact in their reporting TOO.

The point I made is that it is impossible for it to be just an accident as the guard rails are safe enough.

Even if he fell off it was still recklessness and irresponsibility on his part. It may sound harsh but he has no one to blame but himself. Cruise lines safely design these guard rails and in most cases there is standing room on the other side of the guard rail.

If someone is going to clown around and act stupid and tempt fate then of course they will fall off. It may be an accident but cruise lines should not be held accountable.

I do not beleive that RCCL is to blame at all in this matter.

Here are more details about the events leading up to him falling overboard. By the way, apparently the family has already viewed the video and have acknowledged that he is dead:

I wonder how the travelling companions now feel as they were partly responsible for this event.
I never could see the fun in getting drunk!! I got drunk once before I got married(bachelor party) that was enough for me. Its not that I won't have a beer, wine,or other type drink.(in moderation) But how can you justify feeling horrible the next day and in this case dead?

I think now is the time that cruise lines warn people of the dangers of being drunk on a ship. Maybe they should include these warnings on tickets, brochures, back of cabin doors, etc. It’s a start.

I have to agree - we can blame the cruise industry for many things, but one thing you can't blame them for is not babysitting - it's not their job to do so. This fool who fell overboard had too much to drink and that was totally on him. When I drink on cruise ships, I cheerfully, drunkenly stagger back to my cabin. I feel bad about the fate of this guy, but he'd probably get that shitfaced on land and do something stupid too.

Since he fell off the front and im asuming didnt get a nice leap off the side he probably got sucked under the ship and yeah there probably wont be much of him to find .

All cruise lines have probably lost some people. A combination of excessive drink, youth and being 'male' are normally key factors. It is more common on ‘Party Ships’ such as Carnival.

However, Cunard's QE2 has lost a number of people over the years. The QM2 also lost a passenger. Although Cunard do get a better ‘class’ of man overboard.

In at least several cases, Cunard passengers choose the Queens to commit suicide from. One guys left a note in his cabin, I recall.

See Joe's "Man Overboard" list under Cruise Potpourri over to the left. There is Crystal Harmony too. IIRC the guy wanted to commit suicide, was rescued and then prosecuted.. but don't know what the outcome of any action was?

I have read on another board that the family has retained an attorney that specializes in cruise lines. They feel that RCI did not act quick enough to view the tapes. Now I feel for the family of this young man but please take some responsibility that your son was drunk and fell overboard. The young man was 21 years old and was considered an adult. At some time in our life we all have to take responsibility for our actions.

I agree. No one wants to take responsibility for any of their own actions. I teach high school and I see this trend more and more in my students....no responsibility.

Well, the guys intentionally 'smuggled' alcohol aboard.. they knew they shouldn't, otherwise it would not be on mouthwash bottles. The 'friends' did not report him missing until 12 hours after they had last seen him. I completely fail to see how RCI are to blame here. Where were the 'friends'?? Ok they are no doubt feeling bad right now, but surely they all together bear the responsibility through their behaviour as a group.

How were RCI supposed to view 12 hours of tape x however many cameras there are, any quicker? There would have been less footage to view if he had been reported missing earlier.

I wonder what the actual footage of him going over shows? was he being ill over the edge? or did he purposely climb up and jump? no doubt we will never find out.

Pam

Local news reports here that he had been sitting out on deck for nearly 2 hours, periodically leaning over the rail, apparently vomiting. It was during one of these episodes that he tumbled over the side.

And shame on the attorneys who prey on the emotional state these poor people must be in at this point...no doubt convincing them that somehow the cruise line is at fault, not the irresponsible, poor judgment of their son. A tragedy absolutely, but not the fault of any cruise line. Penny

Does anyone know what part of the ship he fell from exactly.

If I am ever going to be sick on a cruise ship there is no way I would do it over the side. If I had to throw up and couldnt make it to a bathroom I would do it on the deck. It may seem dirty but the stewards will clean it up and it is better than risking your life trying to lean over a guard rail that is set back from the ships edge to begin with.

Only time I have ever been sick on a cruise ship was on Oriana with Norovirus. When you have got to go you go. As an ex Naval sailor we were taught never to be sick over the side as it risks your life and dirties the side of the ship that cant be cleaned until you are in port. At least on the deck you are safe and it can be cleaned up.

Like everyone else I have drunk plenty of alcohol on cruise ships before. Paticulary at coctail parties where the drinks are free. Despite how drunk I got I always managed to find my way back to my cabin and never considered doing anything dangerous.

Did they actually get this on video? Maybe someone from the ship should have gone to his assistance seeing that he wasn't well, and this is regardless of whether he was drunk or ill from something else.
