Carnival names 112,000gt newbuild
2/2/2006
Carnival Splendor is the name chosen for Carnival Cruise Lines’ 112,000gt newbuild that will enter service in Spring 2008. Representing a new class of ship for the line, the 3,006-passenger vessel will be constructed by Fincantieri.
Highlights include a 17,800-square-foot spa – the largest ever incorporated into a Carnival ship. Encompassing two forward decks, the facility will feature a thermal suite, a variety of health and beauty treatment rooms and Carnival’s first thalasso therapy pool. Encircling the upper level of the spa will be a winter garden that will include a ceremonial tea house.

A 5,500-square-foot children’s playroom – the largest in the Carnival fleet – will be located mid-ship. Above the facility will be a new water play area – a first for the line.

Located aft will be a new sports deck featuring arena-style seating for games and other events, while a reservations-only supper club will be located atop the poolside Lido restaurant.

The mid-ship pool – one of four on board – will be enclosed by two full decks of glass walls. The area will be covered with a two-deck-high retractable dome. A large balcony will encircle the upper deck of the pool area.

The vessel will include 1,503 cabins, 60% of which will offer an ocean view with 60% of those featuring balconies.

I wonder who wins the prize for such an innovative name . Never ceases to amaze me the imagination some people have.. 0% pathetic. Oh.. at least they don't get confused over the spelling, unlike RCCL.
Splendo[u]r of Freedom might have been a better name

I am waiting for the next group to be Carnival Mardi Gras, Festivale and Tropicale. At least those names would pay homage to their original ships. I don't think 'Carnival Carnivale' would work though . Why not Carnival 1,2,3,4 etc.??

Stupid! Why on earth are all the major cruise lines using the same names. It hardly reonforces the brands, does it?

There were some many wonderful ship names in the golden age!

Why didn't they just name it "Double Wide" and get it over with?

Splendo[u]r ....

Pam - not sure I understand this statement - I thought RCCL got the spelling right - and that they were trying to appeal to a more international client....

I was recalling this previous thread, where it appears that RCCL have chosen to call Freedom of the Seas' sister "Endeavor" rather than "Endeavour of the Seas" in line with Splendour. At least Carnival are line with their spelling and not having a mix 'n match which can only end in confusion with people not recalling which one has the 'u' and which doesn't

To explain to our International members, the term "double wide" refers to a double-wide trailer, as in mobile home. Whenever someone is put down as "trailer trash" for living in a trailer, the typical reply is "Oh, but it's a NICE trailer," or "It's a double-wide."

In this application, the term applies to the clientele to be typically found on board the ships!

In Australia the term trailer is used to describe:

1. a flat frame (tray) or a container on wheels pulled by another vehicle (car or truck); 2. a detachable back part of a large truck (semi-trailer AUS, US) (juggernaut UK).

While the term caravan is used instead of trailer for a vehicle used as living quarters (while travelling).

As for the name...no surprises and very unimaginative. However, we can’t blame Carnival for their choice. They are now stuck ‘in a rut’ and have to follow convention, so don’t expect anything different when more newbuilds (options with Fincantieri) are announced.

How about " Carnival Get R Done" !!!!!!!!!

For the ones outside of the states, there is a redneck comedian that uses the phrase above in his act. Kind of fits the mode of what a lot of people think about the "typical" Carnival passenger. After my last two or three cruises with Carnival I have to agree with them.

Completely unimaginative! Do they have no pride (oops, they do). Can't they make up a unique name that another line is not already using? Can a line trademark a name?

Why don't they take some of their own names instead of RCI's. Like Carnival Princess or Carnival Mary or something.

My one Carnival cruise did in fact feel like I stepped into a Jeff Foxworthy scene. I did not fit in without a tattoo, a NASCAR hat and a Budweiser t-shirt. (Non Athletic Sport Centered Around Rednecks)

"If the shoe fits"! The ships themselves are completely unimaginative, so why not have the name to match?

Its not that bad of a name, and I dont think they deliberatly copied Splendour of the Seas... Just Carnival Splendor dosent seem to be exciting, dosent fit with their naming scheme. I wish we could see something catchy.

Seems several of the cruise lines are stuck in a rutt on their names, Carnival-This and Carnival-That, or Yaddablabla Princess, or Costa-Somethingoranother. Hard to break from this pattern it seems...

How would you feel though with a Costa Spirit Class named Rafaello or Andrea Doria, or a Carnival Conquest Class named Normandie or Paris? A new NCL ship named Norway or Aquitania...just doesnt fit.

I think we all agree its best to leave those names to history.

Cruise ship names over the past 40 years seem to run in themes among the cruise lines. At one time, many ships used natural elements in their names, including "Sun", "Sky", "Star", etc.

Then there was a period of royalty sound bites in the names, incorporating "Royal," "Princess," "Crown," "Majesty," "Monarch," etc.

Lately the names are more altruistic-sounding, or somehow noble: "Valor", "Splendo(u)r," "Liberty,", "Freedom," "Pride," etc.

The problem is when the several cruise lines all try to incorporate these themes into their fleets during the same time period, causing confusion and showing a lack of creativity and imagination.

I think they are just running out of names. Also most passengers don't even care what the ship is called and won't even remember it six months after their cruise.

Very true. I have had conversations with individuals that have cruised and cannot remember the name of the ship that they were on.
