Hello,

i received last week a news saying that in the 2006/2007 south american season Costa would send Costa Fortuna to replace Costa Victoria and Costa Romantica would keep cruising to Argentina. Yesterday i received a Costa "folder" already showing the itineraries and dates of both ships. The rumors were correct. It seems that Carnival want to show who is the "boss" in south america since many companies are introducing new ships over here. Does somebody knows about other companies? What they are planning for the next season? Is there any chance of we see MSC Musica in her inaugural season in south america? And what about RCCL instead the horrible Island Cruises?

PS: You can all be sure that i WILL NOT cruise in Costa Fortuna!

I think the Costa cruises to South America sell better than the Caribbean. I was looking at the season this year and majority of the sailings were sold out. I think all of the sailings in the caribbean had rooms availiable.

Italianliners,

I believe that the MSC Musica is destined for the winter season in Fort Lauderdale. I'm not surprised that Costa is going to bring the Fortuna down to South America as the Concordia will take her place in Europe for the winter. In fact, I'm surprised they didn't place the Atlantica in South America this year.

South America is a burgeoning market for them and all lines and given the fact that they are much better known there rather than here in North America, makes it a very smart move.

Why won't you cruise on the Fortuna? And is Island Cruises really that bad?

Also, let's not forget that Costa's entire passenger operation, since their beginnings in the 1940s, was to serve the South America market, originally with line voyages between Italy and S.A. Through-out the past few decades, their cruise operations have been quite popular and successful in Brasil and Argentina.

Don't let a distaste for new owners Carnival sway your opinion of Costa; yes, they have changed with the times like every other cruise line, but they do serve the South American market quite well.

Hello Tim,

i would not like to cruise in Fortuna since she is a Carnival ship to me, and i saw some interior shots and doesnt seems to be very "italian", just another Joe Farcus ship. Island Cruises, not only in Brazil, is a very informal cruise, as you supose to know, they doesn't have gala evenings or two sitting dinner, because is a "liberal" cruise. They give here a impression of cheap cruises, with most of them with 3 or 4 nights. The only thing that's good is the new Island Star, but with the refit i believe that she is a little bit crowded now.

I would be careful with preconceptions against 'newcomers' . Also a two sitting restaurant is not really a synonym for luxury or high quality.

Also, I do not really understand why Carnival 'Las Vegas' style is worse than tacky overdone cliche Italian style - it is just different.

I have been misunderstood. I was mentioning to the freestyle cruises, as the NCL, without schedules for the lunch or dinner. I also understand that two sittings are not synonymous of luxury, but at least they are the minimum that if waits of a traditional cruise. The "Las Vegas" style is very relative, therefore it has people that they like and others that do not like (my case), but the Italian style (relating to MSC and the Costa's older ships) is of very better taste and much more classic than Joe Farcus design, without a doubt.

MSC is a different case than Costa - for sure more tasteful. Of course freestyle dining is not the same as a one sitting restaurant - but if it is organized properly I would prefere it to two sometimes rushed sittings. (I understand that NCL is still 'learning' or had to learn in beginning how to handle that)

Bringing a jumbo ship down to South America is a smart smooth - hopefully lower rates . I haven't seen the purposed itineraries for the COSTA FORTUNA, but I would think there will be ports that the C. FORTUNA cannot enter compared to smaller ships that preceeded her?

How many ports/cities have facilities that can handle ~2500-3000 passengers and dock ~100,000-110,000grt ships?

Hello,

the same ports (Rio De Janeiro, Santos, Salvador, Maceió, Búzios, etc) that Costa Victoria is visiting this year, Costa Fortuna will visit next season. I will try to scan the folder.
