From Seatrader:

Oceania in `advanced' talks for a fourth R ship 22/11/2005

Oceania Cruises is in `advanced negotiations' to acquire a fourth sister ship, president and ceo Frank Del Rio announced at today's naming ceremony for Nautica in Istanbul. Del Rio said the vessel will be called Marina, `and, if all goes according to plan, it will be named in Hong Kong on Saturday, July 7, 2007.' Del Rio did not elaborate further but, as suggested by his use of the word `sister' to describe the acquisition, the company is pursuing another R-class vessel, Seatrade Insider has confirmed. Oceania's fleet currently consists of the former R One, R Two and R Five. R Three and Four are sailing as Pacific Princess and Tahitian Princess for Princess Cruises. R Six is owned outright by Pullmantur. R Seven is Delphin of Delphin Renaissance. R Eight is Swan Hellenic's Minerva II.

Which one do you think they will get? I would guess that it might be one if the Princess Twins as they would be christening the ship in the Pacific, where these two are based. Though I wanted those two to go to Cunard or HAL....

It would have to be one of the Princess ships as Tim explained once before:-
"R's 6 through 8 were built without all the 322 square foot suites, in their place went an entire additional deck of 216 square foot balcony cabins." read this old thread.

Oceania wouldn't want the others... unless I suppose the only option.

What happens when Oceania wants more R-ships and they can't get any? Will they think about newbuilds?

I'm thinking one of the Princess ships too, I believe it would have to be Pacific Princess as I am sure that Tahitan Princess has to sail in Tahiti for part of the year, as I believe that was the original agreement that Princess had to live by when they acquired her. However I think the Pacific Princess is a little different story as she does not have that guarantee, so she can easily go to Oceania. And she will be sailing in early 2007 in Asia.

I could see Mickey Arison dumping the Princess twins. I have a feeling it might be the Tahitian Princess because the PACIFIC PRINCESS seems to more famous and has wider range of itineraries while the TAHITIAN P is stuck in the Tahitian Islands. I don't think Mickey Arison has interests in a small ship in a hard-to-get-to location that doesn't bring in "enough" revenue.

I heard the agreement that prevents TAHITIAN PRINCESS from leaving Tahiti is only valid for a certain amount of time (I want to say 5 years).

Where Marina will sail
November 23, 2005

Oceania Cruises plans to deploy its fourth ship ‘primarily in the Pacific Rim year-round,’ president and ceo Frank Del Rio told travel agents on board the new Nautica. Yesterday, at the ship’s naming in Istanbul, Del Rio disclosed the company is in ‘advanced discussions’ about a fourth sister ship and, if all goes well, Marina will be named on July 7, 2007, in Hong Kong.

‘It might be R Three, Pacific Princess. It might not be,’ Del Rio said in response to agent speculation about the ship. ‘We are in discussions with all parties.’

Though the ship has not been finalized, Del Rio has a good idea of where it would operate: China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Australia-New Zealand and Tahiti. If things calm down, Bali could be on the charts, too.

‘We think China is hot as a pistol, in the U.S. particularly,’ Del Rio said. ‘We think avian flu will die down,’ he added.

The Oceania chief executive pointed to heavy promotional spending by Chinese tourism officials in advance of the 2008 Summer Olympics and cited a report that 1,000 new museums will open in China between now and the Games --100 in Shanghai alone.

It sort of begs the question if Oceania takes Pacific Princess, what replaces it? We have already had the aborted move of Dawn Princess replacing PP. PP does a good trade on its annual South Pacific season out of Sydney and P&O Australia/Princess wouldn't want to give up the market so HAL or, worse still, NCL or RCCL could claim this market with its own ships.

Pac Prin is definitely doing the 06/07 season out of Sydney but nothing confirmed beyond that and maybe this is why. It may also explain why Regal Princess was kept in the Princess fleet because moving up in size it is probably next biggest if you take away the ex "R ships".

I guess we never heard the real reason why Dawn Princess' Australian season was cancelled so it is hard to say if the economics of a ship the size of Regal (or Dawn) Princess is a problem as a premium South Pac offering.

A final thought out of left field could be Princess no longer serving the premium South Pac market and handing it to P&O Cruises who could base Artemis out of Sydney for the premium season. It is about the right size and is adult only. (Pac Princess is effectively an adult only offering with children priced at adult fares indicating that they are not welcome.)

The number of children on Pacific Princess is indeed limited, due to the ship being designed as adult only , hence no facilities or room for children.
I have had 3 cruises on her and on each there were children and they had to use either the Sterling Steakhouse during the day,or the card room. With only having 1 pool the staff had to set the pool aside at certain times so the children could play water games.

Logic would say that DAWN PRINCESS will pay us (Australasia) a visit as initially intended.

I know it may seem ridiculous ... but it's very hard for me to imagine the Princess fleet without a ship called Pacific Princess.

On another board, someone has dug out some archived press releases from August 2002 that announced that Princess was taking Pacific Princess and Tahitian Princess on lease purchase contracts, with the option to purchase falling due in late 2004. It doesn't exclude the possibility that Pacific Princess will go to Oceania - Princess might have refused the option or might be proposing to lease her to Oceania - but it seems to reduce the likelihood that this is what's planned.

Say Carnival/Princess refuse to purchase these two ships, if one goes to Oceania who will pickup the other?

I still have a feeling the TAHITIAN PRINCESS will be the first one to leave. It seems that she has be neglected and forgotten in the Tahitian Islands...

Pullmantur could be interested. However, I think that they would rather Delphin or Minerva II as are similar to R-6 Blue Dream. Could Delphin Seereisen or Swan Hellenic also participate in the exchange of ships? Could Pullmantur sell their R-6 to Oceania in exchange of getting both Pacific and Tahitian Princess?

--Princess Cruises does indeed own the Tahitian and Pacific Princesses.

--Minerva II is still on lease from Cruiseinvest.

--Tahitian's contract in French Polynesia has just been renewed/extended.

--Pullmantur purchased the former R6 ourtight from Cruiseinvest a few months ago.

Indeed, there is a burgeoning market for smaller ships such as these and they CAN and DO make money - if marketed properly and operated wisely.

Could this mean the DELPHIN RENAISSANCE is available?

The Delphin Renaissance is still on charter as well. None of this should be construed as "what's available and what's not" as all ships are available for the right price.

Y'all just have to keep guessing.

Oh Tim. I think you guys at Oceania should give whoever guessed the right ship a free cruise...or atleast a ticket into the naming ceremony of the MARINA.

Waynaro,

it's no secret that Delphin Seereisen has been in uncalm waters. Recently Mr. Hey, the company's longtime owner, stepped down as managing director and his managing company MTC is also no longer involved with the ship's management.

Best,

Raoul

It's possible about Delphin Renaissance, but I think Oceania will fry better fish, no doubt they will go after one of the Princess ships as these are the ONLY two left with the Deluxe Suites on them like the other 3, which they already have. And from what I've read about Oceania they are very smart business people and I am sure they will stick with the Suite ships which leaves the Pacific and Tahitan Princess, one of them would be the only choice! And since Tahitan has to stay in Tahiti, then that leaves Pacific Princess left.

Well eventually Oceania have to pick up the non-suite ships if they want to expand their fleet.

If there is no more R-class ships available, they will have to build new ships. I wonder if they would consider building more R-class ships?
