According to this website (which is not a phony by any stretch):
http://airfleets.net/flottecie/Carnival%20Airlines-fleet.htm

Carnival had/has their own airline? The pictures on this site are dated 1997, so I'm assuming that its long gone but the table says 2 737's are still in the 'fleet'. When/Why/How did this emerge? And if it has gone, when/why/how? Actually i think i could understand a how (airline saturation, simply cheaper to bump passengers on commercial flights rather than running a small fleet of their own).

Anyone flown them?

Never heard about that - very interesting. Altough planes with T-tails like the MD-80 would have been more consistent with the fleet.

Yes, Carnival Airlines was formed in 1989 as a charter airline to carry passengers from various cities into the Bahamas and San Juan, to feed their ships. The planes carried the Carnival logo on their tails, just like the logos on the ships' funnels.

They eventually had a fleet of about 22 aircraft, mostly 727s and 737s, and I believe they had an A300, too. I flew on them a couple of times between Miami and San Juan; it was crowded, no frills transportation.

By 1998 the airline was gone, the victim of low profits and poor reputation, especially in the wake of the infamous ValuJet crash in Miami. People were not willing to fly the cheap, no-frills charters for a while after that.

It was a small fleet, small airline, small lifetime. Is that a 767, or an Airbus on top.

Well if you look at the database table in that link, it shows that they only ever had 13 A300's (all gone) and a total of 24 737's (22 gone and 2 stored).

I just found it interesting as I did a search and pretty much found nothing on it, was wondering why no-one ever said anything about it.

But apparently their 737 (probably pre-NG series, so -400 or -300) had PTV's in them! Not very often that you see that!

Some of the aircraft were just leased and only the small logo and name were printed on the fuselage. There are photos on airliners.net of some.

I was unaware of this when I doctored a Carnival aircraft for a thread sometime recently, only subsequently coming across it. My doctoring wasn't too bad a guess. The moon on the wrong edge.

Pacific Interstate Airlines acquired by Carnival and renamed Carnival Airlines(a division of Carnival Cruise Lines)
They begun international air service to San Juan, Puerto Rico and Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on charter flight.

On march 2nd 1990, Fantasy made a maiden voyage and started 3-day Nassau cruise and 4-day to Nassau/Freeport Cruise out of Miami while Mardi Gras had been offering same cruises out of Ft. Lauderdale and relocated to Port Canaveral in 1991 although Carnivale had been based Miami but deployed to Port Canaveral in 1990.

Carnival Airlines offered some regular airline services, for example, San Juan to Miami International Airport, San Juan to Orlando, and San Juan to Islip.

Does anyone know if it was only open to Carnival Cruise customers? Would they have picked up holiday makers or business people who just wanted the flight?

Its kinda obvious why they failed, same as the Trump airline. If they wanted to start up an airline and make it successful, they needed new, efficient aircraft to compete with competitors who have new and efficient aircraft. In this sense, think Richard Branson, not Donald Trump!

My brother took a Carnival flight from Ft Lauderdale to White Plains NY in I believe Feb 1995 to visit. I remember his return flight being delayed for 3 days as we got hit by a big snowstorm. About 2 feet worth. They were using a 737 which I think is still the largest airplane allowed to land there. He told me they had free drinks on the return flight due to the delay so I guess it wasn't the worst airline.

From The Business Journal

quote:

March 4, 1997

Carnival Air sets Fort Lauderdale nonstops to Islip, N.Y.

Fort Lauderdale-based Carnival Air Lines said it will launch the only nonstop service between Miami and Islip, N.Y., on April 29. Fares will start at $218 round trip, with flights served by a Boeing 737-400 that accommodates 159 passengers. Carnival already offers nonstop service between Islip and Miami, Palm Beach, Orlando and Tampa.

I did once fly with Cartnival airlines in 1992 from Orlando to San Juan as part of a Vigin Holidays 2 centre package with the Costa Riviera. Arriving early at airport no one had ever heard of them, no signs up. Eventually information said they would be at a certain desk so settled down to wait. No sign of any activity, getting worried so had a walk round & found them other side of airport with a minute tempory sign up...only caught the flight by 30 mins. Eric

In the end Carnival Airlines was merged with the final iteration of Pan Am in 1997, before the combined company went under in 1998.

In the late eighties, Tropicale has been sailed out of Los Angeles although she deployed to San Juan in January 1990 to offer year round 7 day cruises out of San Juan.

In the march 1990, Jubilee relocated from Miami to Los Angeles.

Good one Eric. Virgin used to do a lot of these Carnival packaged holidays, not sure if they still do. At one time it was more or less the only way to book Carnival in the UK, but that changed long ago. I didn't realise they did them as far back as '92. What was the actual flight like? or not really memorable, perhaps.

OT a bit.. but in a port of call... we went into McD in Civitavecchia to get a drink. On the wall was this print.

I thought it was just some advert, and the daughter ran off in embarrasssment of me taking the photo but I-DAVZ is a real MD82 & a photo at Milan is here. McDonald's flies with [vola con] Alitalia. [I originally though it was vola.com which turns out to be a sanitary equipment firm ]

Pam I think 92 was before carnival got their hands on Costa. the flight was memorable now that you have reminded me to think about it. we flew down the chain of Bahamas Islands in clear weather with fantastic views. Cruise was good as well but we picked up a lot of South american passengers at several ports. Our 2nd cruise on costa riv & 2nd cruise in all. We had friends from Heacham (Pocahontras territory) with us & I think we were the only ones from UK onboard. Eric
