In the early 1970's, New pier in the port of Kagoshima was built to berth for Canberra but Oronsay did call at Kagoshima in 1973 for P&O's first ship to call at this port.
Canberra deployed to New York in 1973.
Thereafter, Arcadia, Ellinis, Kungsholm, Fairstar, Canberra, Oriana(1) & (2), QE2 and other cruise ships visited to Kagoshima.

An eruption occurred on 25 April 2004 which produced an ash plume that rose 1.3 km above the volcano and extended North.
