Costa Crociere looking to China

The Asian market is next in Costa Crociere’s project basket according to reports in the Italian media. Specifically, the Genoese company is targeting China’s potential cruise market, where an approximate 50,000 ‘nouveau riches’ are ready to cruise ‘western style’, and are likely to spend $USD5,000 for a weeks cruising. Costa CEO Pierluigi Foschi mentioned a feasibility study was about to be finalized and that it would provide information for a series of ‘wise’ investments.

Could Costa Crociere be that brand for Asia, or will they be part of several Carnival Corp plc brands?

I would have expected Carnival to attempt to 'crack' Asia, but with all of there brands I would not have expected Costa?

Costa is the only arm with the smaller older ships. You can bet they won't be sending anything other than Marina/Allegra, at the most Classica. 50k is a very small market, & US$5k per week! I hope that is per 4 member family & not per person. In Chinese terms that must still be somewhat high.

Note that the press release spoke of a feasibility study only. A lot will depend upon the results before any Costa ships sail in that direction. I agree that Costa has a lot of older tonnage that might be destined for the Asian market but I presume that if any cruise company is really serious about tapping the Asian market it will need some more more modern ships with all the latest facilities to really be serious.

Carnival had attempted to start an Asian cruise line through Hyundai (?) in Korea using the TROPICALE. Venture was not finalized and the TROPICALE went to Costa instead. I think if Carnival does enter the Asain market, it will be done through an existing subsidary with a strong Asian presence or maybe they might buy out Star...

Costa looks to the Far East
July 6, 2006

Costa Crociere is studying the possibility of deploying a ship in China, Seatrade Insider has learned.

If the company moves ahead, it would become the latest of the Carnival Corp. brands to target the Asia Pacific region, where Princess, P&O Cruises Australia and Holland America Line are all boosting capacity.

‘We are studying the possibilty to enter the market,’ Costa spokeswoman Fabrizia Greppi told Seatrade Insider, adding that ‘no decision has been made yet’ on the possibility of deploying a ship to China as early as 2006. She noted that Costa’s new Summer/Autumn 2006 brochure, set to be unveiled in two weeks, has no China program in it.

Costa ceo Pier Luigi Foschi brings vast expertise in Asia. He joined Costa after 23 years with Otis Elevator Co., spending the last seven years as executive vp of its Asia Pacific operations with responsibility for 14 countries, from Mongolia to Australia, from India to Japan.

The head of Costa’s North American operations, Lynn Torrent, previously worked on special projects for Carnival Corp., most recently leading the company’s research team in Asia.

Bigger pie Carnival have a big piece off pie. Holland America/Westtours is the leader in the Alaska market with there cruises and land based operation. Fallowed by Princess. In that sence they are the biggest in the Alaska market.

Greetings Ben.

Costa Riviera did sail 7-day Alaska Cruises out of Vancouver in the nineties.

She was scheduled to call at Ketchikan, Endicott Arm(Crusing), Juneau, Skagway, Davidson & Rainbow Glaciers(Cruising) and Sitka.
