My dream would be an announcement of definite plans to bring the SS UNITED STATES back to service .... offering round trip voyages year-round from New York. There would be completion dates, artist renderings, etc. Unfortunately it will probably be something lame like 50% off a future NCL cruise for everyone in the "Good Morning" audience.

A ‘Good Morning America’ surprise
16/11/2004
Norwegian Cruise Line promises ‘one of the biggest surprises in morning show history’ will be unveiled Thursday on ABC's ‘Good Morning America,’ the widely watched US television program.
NCL is advising viewers to tune in to see president and ceo Colin Veitch and 'Good Morning America' co-host Diane Sawyer reveal the surprise.

Additionally, a special report from Sawyer on board Norwegian Dawn is set to air Friday morning.

I am guessing that NCL has decided to equip all their ships with a Segway.

That would be consistent with GMA's last "biggest surprises in morning show history".

Alternatively, maybe they have decided to respond to RCI's recent announcement and bolt the Pride of America onto the bow of the Pride of Aloha and create the world's longest cruise ship at 1696 feet.

Could it be the answer to RCI's Ultra Voyager? Or INDY back in service? Or a West Coast/East Coast itinerary?

Well if I remember correctly a couple years back NCL had an "historic, ground-breaking announcment". They had a webcast and all to tell us that they would pay travel agents a percentage of commission on the non commissionable part of the cruise fare. Now I am a travel agent (I have been for over 7 years) while that news is nice news to me I didnt consider to be ground-breaking.

So maybe this is another one of those lame things. However it will be broadcasted on a nationaly televised show. Who knows!

One of the SS United State sites mentioned there were "dozens" of workers aboard the ship working on mooring lines among other things. I'm awaiting word from some friends in the Philly area.

I'm curious if as a PR stunt, they would spend the money to tow her to NYC for the visual. Could they be about to tow her to a dry dock for evaluation?

Are there any yards able to handle the work she needs near NYC, which would also be better than those near where she is docked?

Last time NCL announced an ‘earth shattering’ surprise, it was a change in commission levels paid to travel agents - BIG DEAL!

I think the surprise will be that NCL will admit that they were only joking about returning the Big-U to service. They will then announce a partnership between ‘Gillette’ and the Big-U.

Alternatively, maybe they will announce the renovation of the big U is to start and Joe Farcus has been appointed chief designer! His team have started work on the internal neon and the external hull art!

But wasn't that an email that went around to all travel agents, to watch the webcast, that then got set loose by some over the web? I don't think it was meant to be of interest to the rest of us? Maybe I haven't remembered too well.

Pam, you are probably 100% right as normal. But lets not split hairs, just cos it's gonna be on tV, does not mean that it will be as significant as we think or hope it might be.

Maybe they have improved their onboard Towels?

No sir. The closest area to do the work she would need is her birth place of Newport News, VA. They are still very much in the business of buidling ships albeit they are not passenger vessels.

No, the towels have not improved. One of the only minor complaints I can make about my recent cruise on Norwegian Spirit is that the towels are very thin, like dish towels. (Unlike on some ships, where the towels are so big and fluffy "you can hardly close your suitcase!")

The N. Jewel? I hope not, the Dawn and the Spirit are enough for the NYC area, try Boston or some other city.

Maybe they need to be bought-out by somebody.

All their marketing has struck me as being weak. As though the people running things are being told exactly what to do, by folks that don't understand the U.S. market.

I know... everyone on board on an NCL ship right now has just won a brand new Pontiac G6!

(of course the winner must cover $7000 in taxes if they wish to claim the prize).

That would explain why NCL towels are low quality, so no one want to steal them!

Announcing the scrapping of a notional treasure is hardly good PR for prime-time TV, is it? So its VERY unlikely.

Well if the SS leaves Philly we'll know about it. If they setup some kind of remote link on the ship, they might not provide for any warning. If they were going to do much of anything, I'd have to think they would have visited the ship, toured it, filmed, etc. That might have been noticed by somebody.

Compared to vessels staying the day, with a ship like the SS, would you moor it to the dock differently if it were going to sit there for years? Might the workers have been adjusting the lines in advance to tugs coming to take her away in the near-term, or could it be a routine inspection or replacement?

Does the coast guard have to inspect or clear something like the SS before its allowed to be towed?

GMA is not prime-time tv. Given the absolute rubbish sometimes featured on GMA and its morning show competitors, such an announcement would not be out of place.

On the subject of NCL:

November 16 - Today, NCL Corporation announced that it has acquired one of the two major tour bus companies in Hawai`i, Polynesian Adventure Tours. Polynesian Adventure Tours operates over 100 motor coaches and buses and is licensed to operate as a tour bus company on all four of the main Hawai`i islands.

I wouldn't object to RCCL taking over NCL. I could see a press event where NCL takes the lead in saying its merging with RCCL.

A newbuild is possible, but they would have to either committ to building the biggest, or something wild and new.

NCL building the biggest ship might be a stunt which would put them back on the map. But I question its long-term value to the line without a big enough fleet or simular ships.

If they did merge, I could see NCLs ships being folded into Celebrity and the NCL brand either going away, or being totally re-invented with new ships. (Or taking over older RCI tonnage.)

Oh well.
