maybe, what do you guys make of this?
quote:
Star is talking ... but with whom?
02/11/2004
Star Cruises confirmed that talks are in progress with potential business partners but gave no further details.
The disclosure came after the company suspended trading of its shares on the Hong Kong and Singapore exchanges for one day last week due to unusual price movement.

Star described the discussions as ‘at a preliminary stage’ and said that even if business materializes, it may not constitute a notifiable transaction.

Share prices rose sharply on Oct. 26 in Hong Kong, reaching a 52-week high of HKD 2.60 (33 cents US) before closing at HKD 2. Trading was suspended in Hong Kong and Singapore the following day and resumed on Thursday. Star said in a statement that management was not aware of any reasons for the share run up.

Star closed at HKD 2.025 (26 cents US) on Tuesday, down .10.

I wouldnt mind seeing that happen. It would be a win win situation for both companies.

RCI and P&O/Princess were of course talking about merger, unil the big guns of Carnival stepped in. A merger with star is not out of the question!

Maybe this would provide more cash to renovate the Big U!

True, and this time, i can bet Carnival wont (cant) do anything, mainly because they cant, the governement wouldnt allow that.

So long as it's not Carnival! They have too much market share of the cruise industry already. It's sad that Star can't make it own their own and is now looking for a suitor. Three big players in the cruise industry is bad enough .... let's hope that doesn't go down to two. I'm disappointed Star can't make it own their own, and I really don't understand why since they should have a practical monopoly on Asia and seem to be doing ok with NCL. Of course Carnival is very interested in Asia, so nothing would surprise me.

I hope its more like an alliance rather than combined company....

Maybe they can form a program in which past passengers can interchange their cruise discounts (something like WLCL's VIP which is for the N.A. cruise lines for Carnival). I do hope they keep seperate identities!

Well, Royal Caribbean is a good theory... But I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't MSC. They are a large company with a great deal of cash in reserve. If they are comitted to expanding, Star would be a perfect fit.... Lets stay tuned to what could possibly be the final consolidation in the industry.

This is what Fairplay reported:

quote:
Star Cruises confirms talks
November 3, 2004

TRADING of Star Cruises stock was temporarily suspended on news that the Asian cruise giant is in talks with a potential partner. In a statement, Star admitted that it is now in "exploratory discussions" with a "potential partner with respect to tourism-related business", but cautioned that the proposed tie-up "may or may not materialise". Star gave no indication on whether the negotiations involved its Star and/or NCL cruise brands, and said that no agreement has been reached with the unnamed potential partner. In response to "unusual share price movement" on 26 October, trading in Star shares was temporarily suspended on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and CLOB International Exchange on 27 October.

Fairplay

At present there is only speculation regarding RCI or for that matter any other cruise line (Carnival, MSC and even NYK). They may be looking at Hotel chains or resorts, it does say “tourism-related business...” Your guess is as good as mine.

If RCI mergers with Star, I would hope they wouldn't force Star to curtail internet bookings as they have done with Celebrity.

I would have though cruise lines would love Net bookins - because of no Travel Agents commision?

I thought Star was about to merge with NCl since on NCl brochures it says "A family of great cruises"
Star Cruises is the parent company of NCL. Or is it just that Norwegian bought some of Star's ships.

Star Cruises and Carnival Corp. both had a bidding war to acquire NCL Holdings back in 1999 and through mid 2000. NCL was absorbed by the Star Cruises, but kept seperate identities. Earlier this year, Star created NCL Corp. which consists of NCL and Orient Lines, yet Star owns 100% of the stocks.

Would it be impolite to say that Farcus has been out-Farcused?
