Cyprus based Louis Cruise Lines will be creating a Greece-based cruise company.

Full details in the following report:

Public Company Ltd announces that it has proceeded to the establishment of a subsidiary in Greece, which will start cruises in March 2005 from the port of Piraeus.

At first stage, cruise ships CALYPSO and ITHAKI (“Ausonia”) will make 3-day, 4-day and 7-day cruises from the port of Piraeus.

The great promotion of Greece during the Olympic Games, the spectacular upgrading of the infrastructure and the significant improvement and increase in the hotel units in Attica will be the strong foundations on which the future increase in tourist arrivals in the Greek capital will be based.

The Company also decided to run cruise ship AQUAMARINE (“Carousel”) from Genoa and Marseilles in summer 2005, offering 7-day cruises to Western Mediterranean.

The operation of cruise ship SAPPHIRE with the 10-day and 11-day cruises from Genoa and Marseilles to the Central and Eastern Mediterranean as well as the good prospects of the sector worldwide show the successful course of the Company in the European market.

These decisions that fall within the framework of LCL’s strategic for the expansion its operations in selected markets abroad are expected to increase the Company’s turnover and contribute positively to its profitability for the next years.

The Company announces that pursuant to the terms of the contract, the management of cruise ship Island Escape will be terminated on November 2, 2004.

The latest developments are not expected to affect the forecasts of Louis Public Company Ltd on the results for 2004. The Company’s profits are expected to quadruple compared to the corresponding results for 2003 and exceed £8.0 million.

This all sounds very interesting Pan. Do you know what Calypso is like aboard? I have seen a couple of Ausonia reviews. Calypso doesn't then tie in with Karsten's thread re her call in Copenhagen next year.

But the comment which stands out is re Island Escape. That's only a couple of weeks ahead. Who is taking over the management?

Interesting, interesting !
I guess this will be going to be hard times for ROC and Golden Sun Cruises again.

V-Ships will probably take over the entire management for ISLAND ESCAPE as they sign already as the manager for a while.

My Experience this Summer on Board the SAPPHIRE of Louis Lines was not the best!

They have big Deficits in Organisation and in the Quality of their responsible Officers on Board.

The working People are better than those who should lead them.

The Food was simply, cheap Mediterranean Cooking, but not bad, it was prepared fresh on Board and not catered and made warm in Water Bath like MSC and Costa did. Food on MSC and Costa was without any Taste and Spices, here i see an Advantage on Board the Sapphire, they have Taste and use Spices.

Waiters are willing, but in an Dining Room of about 350 Seats and only 4 Stations for Service and without an Assistant or Bus Boy to run for them, they have never an realistic Chance to give an good Service.

If they work hard on their Problems, Louis will be in Future able to go into Competition.

For the Moment: 2 Stars, not more!!

In this Point, i have an other Opinion than Douglas Ward and his Berlitz Edition 2004, he sees the Sapphire at 3 Stars...

... but i am willing, to book again with Louis, the Problems can be eliminated. An Member of Louis Family was on Board at the Time of my Cruise and i hope, he looks carefully, what to do.

I myself was often together with Officers at the Reception and on Deck and told them, what my Advice would be.

So, hope for Improvement in the Future and work to be perfect.

Here is what Seatrade Insider reported...:

quote:
Louis launches new Greek operation
October 22, 2004

Louis Cruise Lines has set up a new Greek arm to operate cruises out of Greek ports from next March. Initially two ships will be used for the operation: the 600-passenger Calypso and slightly bigger Ausonia (to be renamed Ithaca). They will perform 3-day, 4-day and 7-day itineraries out of Piraeus to the Greek Islands and Turkey.

Louis’ senior general manager International Marketing & Sales, George Stathopoulos, who is based in Genoa, is general manager of the new Greek company and will spend time in both locations. He states: ‘This decision is part of LCL’s strategy to expand its operations in new markets which present important opportunities. It is also a proof of the trust of LCL in the future of the Greek cruise market and, in particular, the potential of Piraeus to become one of the most important cruise centres worldwide.’

According to Stathopoulos: ‘The extensive positive publicity that Greece enjoyed during the Olympic Games, the spectacular improvement of the local infrastructure, as well as the significant increase and upgrading of the hotel capacity in the area of Athens, are important factors that will undoubtedly lead to a substantial increase in the number of tourists to Greece.’

LCL believes that Piraeus has not yet realised its full potential as a cruise hub. ‘We are determined to contribute in the most effective way towards changing this situation, since we strongly believe in Greece as a tourist destination and we are certain that Piraeus could and should be established as a key cruise hub for the wider region,’ says Stathopoulos.

As well as targeting international tourists visiting Greece, Louis will also further promote its cruise programme to the local Greek market. ‘Based on our strong network and close relations with the leading international tour operators, we expect to attract clientele from new markets which will in turn result in substantial benefits for the Greek tourism and the Greek economy, in general,’ concludes Stathopoulos.

Louis recently announced Aquamarine (ex Carousel) will be joining Sapphire in 2005 in its pan-European operation out of North Med ports, established earlier this year.

LCL, which owns 10 cruiseships, has been gradually reducing its dependence on ex-Cyprus sailings through its expansion into new markets and chartering out of ships. Apart from the four ships mentioned above, a further three - Emerald, Thomson Spirit and Thomson Destiny (ex Sunbird) - will be chartered to Thomson in 2005, whilst Serenade, Princesa Cypria and Princesa Marissa are based out of Cyprus.

I guess Cypriots will have to cruise on the older ships once more.

With the fleet anounced fleet configuration, the only ships that remain in Cyprus are the Princessa Marissa, Serenade and Princessa Cypria.

I hope Princessa Cypria can still move...as it has been laid up for 3 years now.

heres a quick update from seatrade insider
quote:
Louis puts Seawing into Greek market
31/12/2004
Louis Cruise Lines’ latest acquisition, the 401-cabin Seawing, will operate out of Piraeus, alongside 600-passenger Calypso and slightly bigger Ithaca (ex Ausonia).
The addition of a third ship for the Greek market is due to strong demand, says the company which notes: ‘Demand for the 2005 programme out of Piraeus has already exceeded the capacity offered by the cruise ships Calypso and Ithaca that were originally designated for the Greek market.’

The three Louis owned ships will be conducting 3-, 4- and 7-day cruises from Piraeus to the Greek Islands and Turkey starting in the spring.

And I wonder why Louis has not sold her for scrap? Instead, they sold the classics that could actually move !!!

Now with SEAWING, does Louis plan on giving her a refurbishment/update before entering service in 2005? A new name possibly? Anyhow, I am surprised that Louis is strongly growing and taking advantage of the gap left by ROC.

Indeed they seem to be taking advantage of the gap, however the new company seems to be more "budget" rather than expensive and "posh".

Since the other two ships (Ithaca and Calypso) are named after Homerus "Odysseia" I would guess that Seawing will be given a name from the same "area".

What is the name of the company set up in Greece?
There had been no announcement about that.

Happy New Year Pan, Keitaro and All. My guess would lean towards "Dionysus" - God of Celebration - after all She (Seawing) has led a charmed life; instead of turning to rust She seems to be bronze plated

Let's keep a close watch - enjoy today and trust the next 363 will be even better.

Thanks, Happy New Year to you and everybody on this board.

Louis have issued again the anouncement that all the cruises out of Piraeus are almost booked from now.

The only thing I can say is that Louis have now got a great advantage, a once in a lifetime opportunity (maybe) to enter the Greek cruise market and expand there. It dully depends on them and in order to do this they have to please every single passenger aboard their ships.

Very interesting prospect: The Serenade is most likely up for sale, Paradise Cruises (also Cyprus based) let MV Atalante go to scrap; my guess would be to fill the gap in Lemmasos by a ship that was based there before - to October 2003 - The recently acquired Seawing.

Makes sense and she is not too big for the port. Anyone have other candidates and has Paradise 'given up'?

I don't believe Paradise cruises 'given up'.. As I know they are in the way to find a new ship to purchase. In their website they had two ships listed in their fleet list section. The Atalante and one other… the Fantasia, who no one has ever seen her in Limassol.

As for Louis cruise lines… they want at least 3 ships in order to run their operations in Cyprus.

Here is a list of Louis cruise ships and where they are going to be used.

AUSONIA - Operated from 2005 on Greek-arm of Louis and renamed into: Ithaca
CALYPSO - Operated from 2005 on Greek-arm of Louis
CAROUSEL - Going to be used in the German market
EMERALD - Charter to Thomson Holidays- UK
PRINCESA CYPRIA - laid-up
PRINCESA MARISSA - Going to be used for Cyprus operations
SAPPHIRE - Going to be used in the German market
SEAWING - Don't know yet
SERENADE - Going to be used for Cyprus operations
SUNBIRD - charter to Thomson Holidays- UK for 6 years New name Thomson Destiny
THOMSON SPIRIT - charter to Thomson Holidays for 3 1/2 year.

As it shows here the 3 ships remains to be used for Cyprus Operations, are PRINCESA MARISSA, SERENADE and SEAWING.

Also is very possible Sapphire come back to Cyprus and Seawing to take her place in the German market.

SEAWING - Don't know yet

The SEAWING will sail with the AUSONIA and CALYPSO out of Piraeus. I am not sure what the itinerary is though.

Speaking of the SERENADE. Yes, Maritime Transportation Consultant has her listed for sale at their site. I wonder why Louis would want to sell her? Honestly, PRINCESA CYPRIA and PRINCESA MARISSA has to go first...

Hello all

My impression from Louis's last anouncement is that Seawing will be used in Greece.

However, there has been no official anouncement about her use so all we can do is assumptions

Why are we sure that Princesa Cypria cannot move?
If that was the case, wouldn't be a good income for Louis to sell her for scrap?

As I know Princesa Cypria, had many technical problems, and the cost to move her will be very high. Also she had an accident in her last cruise and she had problems ih her bow. Princesa Cypria is listed to the sell list for 7 years now. But nobody seems to be interested in her.

Of Course:

Louis Cruise Lines have announced that they had purchased the former My Travel cruiseship "Seawing" . The enlargement of the fleet was though by the Board of the company, to be needed because of the existence of very large demand for Louis Cruises out of the port of Piraeus.
The bookings for cruises on Ithaca and Calypso out of Piraeus in 2005 have already exceeded the capacity of the ships and therefore Seawing will be joining them to perform 3, 4 and 7 day cruises out of Piraeus.

As it has already been anounced the cruiseships Sapphire and Aquamarine will be performing cruises out of Genova and Marseilles.

Many thanks Pan: nice to see She now has a future sealed more or less; I know many of Her former Crew strive to rejoin, and THAT speaks for itself! I trust Capt. Kostas has a free hand in setting out HIS vessell to ensure success all round.

When the itineries appear on Louis' website, Ann and I will look for suitable flights to Pireaus. Cheers
