Pic looks good. I don't think you would see such a stylish Carnival ship. The ship shown is great, but has to many curves and is to streamlined in my opinion for Carnival-to expensive to build.

Carnival Corp could build it...and a few for Costa, a few for Princess, a few for Holland America, a few for Cunard, a few for P&O, a few for Ocean Village, etc....

Peter, I think RCI will most likely build that than Carnival! Like lasuvidaboy said, thats too expensive for Carnival to build....IMO, Carnival has some of the most boxiess class of ships I have ever seen!

That particular design Peter P suggested is a KMY concept called “UltraWide Cruise Ship”. Do we know who the designer of the “Ultimate Class” is/will be? Which yard will build it? And how much is Carnival willing to spend on such a vessel?

Beezo, I know you are joking. Complex ships (a la KMY design) will not become a mould for a cookie-cutter fleet. Too expensive.

Cheers

None of the above... But I do know that the design is almost finished and Carnival Corp. is shopping for the right price...

yup i know! Does seem way to expensive, and probably not fitting for all brands...

What else do you know about the design? Any hints?

When it comes to the right price I think Fincantieri and KMY are the frontrunners. When is Carnival Corp. looking at building these? 2008 onwards?

Yep, that particular KMY design would be, but don’t be surprised if Carnival and the shipyard don’t chop and change things to suit the different brands.

Cheers

It seems that Fincantieri is too busy to build this class after they have got so many orders lately... maybe?

Yes, in the short-term it won’t be possible, however if Carnival is looking at a start date of 2007/2008 then it could happen. If KMY got the contract would it be at Turku?

Chantiers d’Atlantique is a possibility if their prices are competitive. Meyer Werft is highly skilled, but can it compete on price? The same goes with MHI in Japan. Doesn’t Carnival want the most bang for buck (best deal)?

Cheers

And would the ship be shallow and narrow enough to float down the river to the sea?

I think so, Helsinki seems to be going down (not shortly but...)

Option is also build the hull in Rumania and do rest here in Finland.

That is a cool futuristic design...I'd like to see it built! I like the longer bow area, and the cool bridge area and superstructure.

It seems it will be 2007-2009...It all comes down to when the order is placed...

Good question. I don’t know the specs of this KMY design, but by just looking at the picture you would think the breadth would be over 40m (131ft) and the draft at probably 8-8.5m (26-28ft). Draft-wise that would be OK, but breadth-wise that would be a problem. They would have to dismantle the Jann Berghaus bridge at Leer. Makes you wonder why Meyer Werft build ships up a narrow and shallow estuary, doesn’t it?

From the design it also looks like she may have an atrium through the middle of her superstructure. That’s nice.

But not only that, wouldn’t the size of these ships preclude Helsinki? The idea of building the hulls in Rumania would be very cost effective and keep KMY competitive. The only downside is that there will be less work for the Finnish shipworkers.

Anyone know whether Carnival Corp. and Fincantieri been working on a 180,000GT design?

Cheers

I think that the (only slightly facetious) answer is because they've always done it there. Papenburg was a great seafaring port back when the shipyard was founded in 1795 - it gets many mentions in the first Aubrey/Maturin book, the real Master and Commander (here or here), which is set within a handful of years of that date. (It probably gets mentions in many of the other books, too, but that's the only one I've read - so far.)

But at least they can still build good size ships there, unlike some of the once-powerful Cinque Ports, which you can't even reach with a small dinghy any more. (OK, maybe I exaggerate slightly, but you know what I mean.)

I found this picture with an old article that came out just after the Sovereign of the Seas went into service. They were speculating about the future of cruise ships.
Little did they know that today an order for a 180,000 ton cruise ship would not seem unusual.
