After great success in the boxoffice with Starsky and Hutch, filmmakers have decided to bring back another classic, "Love Boat", the movie... the castand crew has not yet been selected, nor has the date when they will start filming...

What do you think of this?

I heard that on the radio too! I wonder what ship they would use? The former PACIFIC and/ or ISLAND PRINCESS would be good!

Since the orgional series was very dated, I think one of the super tanker liners would be used. To watch the reruns now, the origional ship looks likes a toy compared to the current aircraft carrier cruise lines. If the producer can get the funding, anything can happen.

Saw the Pacific Princess (now Pullmantur Pacific) docked next to Celebrity Constellation in Antigua on 3/18 and next to Adventure of the Seas in St. Maarten on 3/19.

Looked like the big ships lost one of their life boats.

The Pacific Princess/Island Princess could be leased cheap for location shots, at least they still are so much better looking than the gigantic box cruise ships of today even though they are much smaller. The whole movie could be retro 1977 with an entire Aaron Spelling look. Maybe Jacquline Smith can pull up to the dock for her cruise in her Charlie's Angeles Ford Pinto in a cameo shot!

I once wrote a Love Boat episode, but it was a musical.

One of the story lines involved an entertainer onboard and a bar waitress. The entertainer gave up on love shoreside and ran away from his struggles to find the right woman, by going to work on a cruise ship. The contrast of a member of the crew who is in a leadership position onboard (entertainer), and the bar waitress, who struggles with her own self esteem - make the love connection interesting.

It would seem obvious now. They would probably use the only ship named after the original's and I don't mean the new small one (Pacific Princess) I mean the New Island Princess. It would seem it unless they use the New Pacific Princess(too small).I would hope something different (New Island Princess 91,627 GT).Captain Stubing as he was called is on Princess ships now a days after all...Island Princess is one of my favorites! We'll wait and see.

The original programme was absolute rubbish - why on earth would any one want to either produce or sit through a feature length version of it?

A few years ago there has been broadcasted a new serie of Loveboat, with depressive actwork and bad storylines. I believe it was only broadcasted for a few episodes and it never came back on the screen. When this movie will be made, I hope they will do it the right way- with great actors aboard a Princess cruise ship ofcourse! I'm sure it will be a Princess ship as that company still has warm connections with the programme that made her a well-known shipping company. Soon one of the original actresses will even be the godmother of -and marry aboard- one of their new ships.

Maybe the new Pacific Princess would be a good ship, not too big and a classy appearance. Or either one of their Big Sisters, having lots of features onboard with results in more filming locations...!

I hope to be informed in time when the ship has been choosen; I'd love to be with Nicole and Gwyneth in a Princess pool!!!LOL

Judging from Princess Cruises idea of fun to have one of the TV series stars to christen, then get married on Caribbean Princess, they may even use that giant!

If the new movie is meant to be a satyre on the original series- a tongue-in-cheek version like other recent "TV turned Big Screen" movies (Brady Bunch is a good example) then Princess may not want to have one of their ships used.

I would love to see a ship in a movie- but if the movie pokes fun at cruising, the Love Boat, or shipboard life- I can't imagine any line wanting to be associated with that.

However, if the movie is meant to be fun and a tribute to the original series- I hope Princess grabs the opportunity. They'd be fools not to.

I think we miss a minor point. Who says they have to go with Princess at all? What is to say they don't get a better deal from RCI? That said, if they do a slap-stick version like other recent movies, then let them use Princess.

I guess it depends on what line which producer was on most recently.

No one said it was Shakespeare. If it was, no one would have watched it.

"The Love Boat" was one of the most popular television shows in history.

Hell I just caught an episode today on TV Land.

Uhhhhh, NO. Then it wouldn't be "The Love Boat". "The Love Boat" was Princess, not Royal Caribbean.

"The Love Boat" was not just Princess, the "Love Boat" was "Pacific Princess" (whatever ship was used), with that sweeping staircase, and with that particular crew.

I don't think it could be recreated, the show has (in my memory) a sort of carefree naivité, typical 70's, which is not of these times, most films and TV-shows are harder, faster than those shows.

And if they would do it in the manner of these days, it wouldn't be "the love boat" anymore, and the old show would be spoilt.

A show or big production film onboard a cruise ship would be a great thing but it should be something else, like "Cruise" that 6-part reality show on BBC some years ago, which was definitely a contemporary format, on a contemporary ship, and also quite good, i thought.

"Love Boat" was very enjoyable and I would love to see a rerun, but it is history, just as Pacific Princess is now "Pacific, and recently described on CruiseTalk as a 'tender' to the modern ships...

Actually you are not entirely correct. While probably the majority of episodes were shot on PACIFIC PRINCESS, there were many episodes shot on ISLAND PRINCESS, and also SEA PRINCESS. "Love Boat: The Next Wave" was shot on SUN PRINCESS. My point is, "The Love Boat" must be a Princess ship or it is not "The Love Boat".

I know.
What I meant was, that name used in the series itself of the ship was "Pacific Princess", as was the name of the captain "Stubing" (without this being the name of the real captain).

Still, I don't think a recreation is a good idea - surely, Hollywood is creative enough to come up with a fantastic film about a cruiseship and the interaction between passengers, and crew, without using the name of an old and beloved TV-series. (and thus spoiling these series)

No, you're still wrong. When the series was filmed on the ISLAND PRINCESS, the ship was called ISLAND PRINCESS. When the series was filmed on the SEA PRINCESS, it was the same. They didn't just use the other ships and then still call it the PACIFIC PRINCESS, whatever ship they filmed on, that was the ship they were on.

Every episode *did not* take place on the PACIFIC PRINCESS.

During the original ABC TV series (as opposed to the short-lived revival on UPN with Robert Urich as captain) most of the Princess ships were featured, but there were also episodes shot aboard Stella Solaris and Vistafjord. How the crew got temporarily transferred to Sun Lines and Cunard respectively for these episodes was never satisfactorily explained.

And as CGT says, the ship name used in each episode was the name of the actual ship used for that particular episode.
