According to the grapevine here in Miami a new cruise line is set to be launched any day.The new North American cruise line is set to announce a major new building. This has been in the works for months now and the blockbuster deal was signed very recently, according to the Miami grapevine.

Does anyone have information on this new cruise line? Their new ship? And what do they mean by "major new building"?

If this is true then it has been kept very quiet. I've not heard a peep about it.

Lets hope they don't mean another short-cruise start up out of Miami/Pt. Canaveral either.

New cruise lines do not normally start by building ships? They normally purchase second hand tonnage?

Even the mighty Carnival started this way!

This would be a very interesting development for the Entire Cruise Industry for sure!! And I wonder WHO is behind this NEW cruise line?? To build new ships they are going to need a good amount of $$ to get it going and get established!!

I wonder what markets they will operate in?? I think the Year Round Mexican Riviera market out of San Diego or San Fransisco sould use some more competition! And even doing 3,4 and 5 day trips out of Seattle calling at Vancouver,Victoria,Campbell River and Prince Rupert,BC! That is an ideal itinerary for any cruise line to make some good $$ at!!

And also maybe cruises using Montego Bay as home port too!

Rumor has it that Richard Sasso and Karen Stamps and Cy Hopkins (all former executives with Chandris and Celebrity) were being courted by major players to "run" a new line.....
stay tuned.

PS.....I hope there is no confusion with the new plans for MSC (logo/name change) as the Aponte family and their cruise line staff are in Miami as I write.

To start a new line with new ships is a rare event in the cruise industry. My guess is that it would have to be a new brand launched from an existing company- the way P&O launched Ocean Village.

Or, a large shipping company with nautical experience and significant capital entering the cruise industry.

This is what NYK line did with Crystal Cruises and the construction of Crystal Harmony. They hired cruise line execs with experience, came up with a business plan and market research, and then planned a newbuild to match. Obviously NYK did things the smart way... unlike many other startups that began with second hand tonnage.

Maybe Evergreen is finally jumping into the market?

This would be the new venture that is being capitalized by a major hotel group and run by many of the former Celebrity executives.

Well we have seen Radisson successfully do it, so why not? It least they should have the financial backing.

Any idea what market they are looking at? Luxury, premium, mass-market? How about the size of the ship?

If they are looking at new tonnage, no deals with any shipyards have been signed so no doubt the earliest they could start up would be a year and half to two years from now.

Tim, hope you have been enjoying Seatrade. I decided to sit this year out. Nothing seemed too exciting on the horizon that I felt like I wanted to go.

Ernie,

Everyone is anxiously awaiting some firm news to 'break' on this one. It does sound like the've got some good names behind them, but they had better have a unique concept. No matter how well capitalized, newbuilds or not or what names, if there's not a unique concept, they won't succeed in today's market. That said, I'm hoping they do. It would be great to see another successful upstart!

As for SeaTrade, haven't been there at all this week as we're christening Insignia in Monte Carlo next week and taking delivery of Nautica just a few days after that.

But it does sound like it's been more interesting than last year!

Good luck with the christenings Tim! Sounds like a lot of fun. I'll be in Monte Carlo myself in a few weeks time.

Best,
Ernie

I doubt very much the cruise community needs one of those. Anyhow Tim, we know what you meant, a "successful start-up".

Cheers

Tim (or anyone else): Is the Nautica another ex-R ship? If so, which one?

Is Nautica identical to Insignia and Regatta and which market will Nautica sail in! I think Oceania Cruises could do well with 10 & 11 day cruises out of San Fransisco say calling at Portland,Victoria,Campbell River,Ketchikan,Juneau,Skagway and return via Sitka and Prince Rupert and Vancouver to San Fransisco. And omit Sitka on the 10 day cruises and maybe spend overnight in Victoria,BCa unique marketing move say arrive in Victoria around 4pm and leave the next day at 9am. I think Oceania could do very well in the Alaska market!!

WOW!!!!!! Rick Sasso from Celebrity!!!!! My husband knew him from the days that Rick worked for Costa as the S.E. Sales Rep. They sat around throwing bull around. A very, very nice man. You could go and borrow a cup of sugar from him and not know he was a CEO. Very humble and perfect for a new cruise line.

With regards to another major upscale hotel brand getting into the cruise buiz...has another ever heard if Starwood Group (Sheraton, Westin, Four Points, St. Regis, Luxury Collection, etc...) ever explored the possibility of adding a luxury cruise brand to their offerings? With Radisson/Seven Seas going so well I would think they must have at least thought about it.

Rick Sasso back in the cruise business...great news! I guess his custom tailored suits for extended length cruisers project didn't work out too well...it's too bad because the concept was good. I was on an employee inaugural party on Mercury right after RCI purchased Celebrity...first Jack Williams was introduced to speak to the employees in the show lounge...everyone clapped...then Rick Sasso got up to speak...everyone gave him a standing "O", it was so loud in there with hoots and hollars...very impressive. He made Celebrity what it was before RCI single handedly...and RCI changed the model and they lost what they once were...hopefully this new branding of Celebrity will bring it back to where it was. I hope the the rumors are true about this new cruise line....because he's done it before and he will do it again...

Well folks....
as I hinted before....
the news is out now.....
Sasso joins MSC as USA President.
He'll bring MSC to a "big brand name" in the states and Canada.
Hats off to Rick and hats off to Gianluigi Aponte, Alexa Vago, and Pierfrancesco Vago for this well "tailored" selection.
Bravo MSC......Bravo!!!!!!
Watch out Costa Crociere,SpA..........MSC is sailing full steam ahead.
FYI.....Costa's Schibuola and Cavarra are being watched by Arinson and Foschi every day.
