I was just looking through the site and when i came to the deck plans, they look like NCL's!

Deck plans page

Do you guys think Gerry Herrod might sell it after a few years like with Orient Lines?

I doubt if it will last trhat long.

I did their cruise to Greenland and Iceland in the Summer and it was excellent.

Have just returned from their cruise to New Zealand and it is obvious that standards have slipped. They have cut down on the number of waiting staff and it shows.

Plus at the moment there are only 3 out of the 4 engines working so the schedules have to be rejigged and ports of call are being missed out.

The Captain tells passengers what they want to hear and not the truth and hence the ETA's are all over the place. Bad weather has been used to cover up deficiencies.

In addition their land arrangements are terrible and a group of us had to fight to ensure that included sightseeeing trips took place on dates given in the brochures.

Although it was full for the New Zealand leg I understand that it is now heading for Hawaii half empty.

This is a shame as it was a good product that appears to have gone bad. Personally I can no longer recommend the firm to anyone.

I am very sorry to hear that Was it anthonyvan... who also enjoyed a trip last summer to Murmansk and said how smart she was? I thought she would be well on her way to carving a niche for herself, but had not heard much recently.. maybe why? The omission of included excursions seems to indicate cash problems Is this not a WC though she is halfway through? Need to get the 4th engine fixed if so, or is it "fuel conservation".

no real surprise she has one of her engines down. with princess it happened quite often on both the PP and IP. their fiat engines have never been that great and after more than twenty years on the job are probably ready to be changed out for new. if their respective new owners can justify the costs.

In The USA Fiat cars which were notoriously unreliable had many acronyms

Fix It Again Tony
Feeble Italian Attempt at Transportation

In the late 1970's the Red Brigade was working in and sabotaging the factories.

When examining the deck plans, they turned the Bridge deck crew space into additional obstructed view cabins. Adding density to this ship is will destroy her intimacy. Her new passenger/ton ratio of 28 is too dense.

I understand both loveboats had plenty of mechanical trouble in their last years with Princess, since they were on a leaseback from the new owners.

Question to the experts: Ships are like lobsters: if they are laid up with no maintinence they
rot and decay very fast. Is that true?

Allegedly the new engine will be fixed on 9th March.

I was actually upgraded to one of the new cabins on Bridge Deck which was certainly roomier than Pacific Deck and one could see out of the window even though the lifeboat was partially in the way.

Those used to be Officer Cabins, except the Owner's Suite which Princess used to sell. Also the gym is in the old Officer's Ward Room which Discovery expanded.

I wonder where they put all Officers now that those cabins are converted to passenger cabins?

Nigel, one possible explanation for the cut back of crew is that before NZ she was down in Antarctic & my understanding is that cruise ships that land passengers are restricted to a maximum of 400. (HAL & Princess have done sightseeing cruises in area with no landings & full complement). This combined with low bookings on other legs may have made them think they could get away with a smaller crew!

Anyway how was Greenland trip?, I am interested in doing that. That is done by a "Voyages of Dicovery" charter for summer, they are marketing the winter cruises, their brochure says are "in conjunction with our friends at Discovery cruises"

So as I understand it Voyages of Discovery charter the ship for the summer & therefor operate it, while in winter it is operated by Discovery cruises who I believe are the ultimate owners (ie Gerry Herrod) but they use Voyages of discovery to market in UK & presumably some others in rest of the world.

Eric,

You are correct re the marketing etc of the boat. The Greenland trip was excellent and I couldn't fault it which is why the recent trip was a bit disappointing.

It was particularly noticeable that the Greenland trip had entertainment tailored to a British audience whereas in New Zealand it was more international.

Pam

Yes I posted a message praising Discovery after my cruise to Murmansk last summer.

I recently met an engineer who had been asked to inspect the ship by a company which was looking to buy a a vessel of similar size. That was before Gerry Herrod bought her. The engineer's recommendation was not to buy because of the Fiat engines.

Best wishes. Toiny

The FIAT diesel engines vibrate quite a bit. I got used to it in 2 hours.
