Hi everyone-I have just been reading some boards on the cruise mates website where apparently celebrity has decided not to use Istanbul in its cruises for 2004. Has anyone else come across this news and if so do they know of the changed itinerary?

Sorry to disagree with you but I think you will find that the celebrity cruise ship Galaxy as part of its cruise from Rome and then to various ports in the eastern Mediterranean in the summer of2004 is supposed to call at Istanbul and even stay there overnight. You will find this information on page 45 of the latest celebrity brochure.

Hi there-thank you very much for that latest information. Celebrity have obviously replaced their original destination of Istanbul with Dubrovnik/Croatia. All I know is that the celebrity cruise line has certainly not informed me of the change. Once again thanks very much.

I must admit that at this point I have to agree with them; for one thing there is a travel warning out from the US Department of State and I imagine that could put them in an extremely difficult position should passengers be affected by another future attack while the warning is in effect. Besides this many Americans (including, I'm sad to admit, myself) would probably be somewhat nervous about travelling to Turkey at this point on the heels of the recent bombings.

All of this is really a terrible shame as having visited Istanbul I can say without reservation that it is one of the most fascinating cities in the world, with some of the most welcoming inhabitants. How unfortunate that its reputation has been temporarily hijacked by some otherwise insignificant extremist elements of the population looking to cause bloodshed and mayhem.

Let's hope that soon the present situation will be over with, the travel warnings can be lifted, and American tourists can once again visit this wonderful country and city without reservation.

I think, Dubrovnik, the former RAGUSA, more than 2000 Years old, and in former Time Part of the
Austrian Empire is an very interesting Alternative.

Now Croatia is coming up after the hard Civil War with the Serbs in the 90's.

The Dalmatian Coast is very nice, and you will enjoy the stay in Dubrovnik.

It is no big Capital like Istanbul, the former CONSTANTINOPLE, the City of the Greek Emperor Constantin the Great, but it is an nice AND FRIENDLY Place, you will be absolutely safe there...

Duh...silly me!

I thought the title of this post was all about Celebrity excluding the meat from the menu!

I know I’ve said this many times before, but NO ONE can predict how, where or when terrorist will strike next, and that includes your home too!

I’m a bit bored with Governments talking about intelligence sources predicting imminent attacks. They are never right. Just look at the ones that they did not predict!

Best to just enjoy life, don't panic and carry on as normal.

Dubrovnik is indeed very nice but it is a tender port.
Istanbul is much better for longer stays. I would go there right away.
Turkey is an islamic country but most people are not fanatic. Istanbul has 16 million people so the chance that you get hurt is not bigger than in New York, Brussels or London

Cruise companies don't just decide not to go to a certain country or port for security reasons. They have specialist companies that watch out and advise them, besides their insurance companies are extremely interested in where the ship's go and premiums can be adjusted to take that into account.

Dubrovnik is a very nice place, but it isn't absolutely compared with the magnificent Istanbul, the only one in the world spanning two continents. Istanbul, as Rome, Venice, New York or Amsterdam, or other places in the world, is unique...so it's a great pity to not have the opportunity to visit her once a time in your life.
I believe that Celebrity has serious reasons to avoid Turkey next year. Also Festival Cruises has changed the itinerary of the Azur, replacing Antalya with a two days stop in Egypt.

I have an Suggestion more:

CORFOU!

It may be, it is the nicest Greek Island...

...here was in the Past our Emperor William II,
in Spring and Autumn.

In Summer he was in Norway, at Stalheim Hotel...

...with his Yacht HOHENZOLLERN.

Ocean Liners is correct, that shot shows where we berthed on Millenium this year. I think all ships berth there now, Dubrovnik old town is just over the hill shown at front of shot. Celebrity ran a free shuttle bus to the town gates.

...and in Turkey they found in the last few Days the Material for some more big Car BOMBS.

I think, there will be some new Attacks in the near Future.

...and on the other Hand, the Country is in Bankruptcy.

Istanbul is an nice and fantastic Place, but more and more dangerous.

There are Alternatives,

nice, friendly,

and in an growing Country with an old Culture.

The Coast of Croatia...

It's very difficult to explain why many cruise lines ( as Costa Cruises ) prefer to stop at anchor at Dubrovnik instead to dock at the port facility.
Is it due to economical reasons perhaps ?
