MIAMI, Nov 2 (Reuters) - Carnival Cruise Line, the flagship line of the world's biggest cruise group, will shift 14 cruise sailings away from Miami to avoid crowds expected for the Free Trade Area of the Americas meetings this month. An estimated 100,000 people are expected in downtown Miami near the Port of Miami, where millions of passengers each year depart and return during sea holidays. Street protests are expected during the talks, which begin on Nov. 22.
Carnival Cruise, which is owned by Carnival Corp. & Plc (NYSE:CCL - News; London:CCL.L - News), said in a notice on its Web site that it was altering itineraries for some November sailings by its Paradise, Carnival Triumph, Carnival Victory, Fascination and Imagination ships.
The ships ordinarily begin and end their cruises in Miami, but will instead drop some passengers at Port Everglades, about 20 miles (32 km) up the Florida coast near Fort Lauderdale, and pick up other passengers there on sailings beginning as soon as Sunday.
Carnival Cruise said it was making transportation arrangements in Florida to accommodate their passengers, who typically fly home from Miami International Airport after cruises in the Caribbean.
Published reports indicated that other major cruise groups, such as Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (NYSE:RCL - News; Oslo:RCL.OL - News), were also considering moving some departures and returns from Miami to the Fort Lauderdale port during the next several weeks.
