"Fun Ship’ Freddy To Interact With Guests, Pose for Photo Ops

Carnival Cruise Lines has introduced a new mascot, “Fun Ship” Freddy, who is now featured throughout the “Fun Ship” fleet.

Modeled after the line’s signature red, white and blue winged funnel, “Fun Ship” Freddy was created to entertain guests of all ages sailing aboard the “Fun Ships” and reinforce the Carnival brand, according to Carnival President & CEO Bob Dickinson.

“Carnival is the family cruise leader - carrying upwards of 400,000 kids annually - and it seems only natural that the ‘Fun Ships’ feature a friendly, fun-loving mascot to entertain guests vacationing aboard our ships,” he said. “A ‘Fun Ship’ cruise is like no other - offering a variety of amenities enjoyed in a relaxing, unpretentious atmosphere. The ‘Freddy’ character fits in perfectly with that philosophy, adding a new dimension of fun and excitement to the Carnival vacation experience,” he added.

Decked out in his customary cruise staff uniform, the six-foot-tall mascot features expressive eyes, a perpetual white-toothed grin, oversized white gloves and sneakers, and, of course, the requisite Carnival ID badge. “Fun Ship” Freddy also has a tux for formal night.
In addition to greeting visitors as they arrive on the ship on embarkation day, “Fun Ship” Freddy interacts with guests and poses for photos throughout the voyage and is often found in the children’s play area, the focal point of many “Camp Carnival” activities.

Thus far, more than 20 people have been hired to portray the “Fun Ship” Freddy character. The “actors,” mostly former drama students, must undergo an intensive shoreside training session followed by a four-day “test run” in full costume aboard ship before being hired. “At Carnival, we take fun seriously and only those individuals with friendly, outgoing personalities can wear the ‘Fun Ship’ Freddy costume,” Dickinson said.

In conjunction with the debut of “Fun Ship” Freddy, a series of plush toys have been created and are available for purchase aboard the new Carnival Glory. The toys will be available on other Carnival ships in the near future.

“Fun Ship” Freddy is currently featured on 17 of 19 Carnival “Fun Ships,” with fleetwide implementation by the end of the year."

So What do you think of "Fun Ship" Freddy?

LOL. Very funny Draikar ....

IMO, I do not like this "Fun Ship" Freddy thing. OMG, Carnival is becoming a second Disney Cruise Line .

I wouldn't think so. They've always been like this. Before on my 1994 cruise on the Sensation they had a gesture in Carnival colors. BTW, what does Fun ship Freddy look like? Any pictures, I mean.

The same way as MM is in Tokyo, Paris, Orlando & LA at the same time, and Father Christmas can drop gifts the world over in 24hrs
Every Theme park has some mascot or other prancing around for the kids, even a Shamu and Dolly Dolphin at Sea World. All the UK theme parks do too, so why not on a Carnival ship? Just as long as they stay there and don't migrate to others.
I wonder if there will be a resembalnce to 'Freddy the Fish'.

Have you seen what this hideous thing looks like? It's going to scare small children! That red face, that big mouth, those things sticking out of it's head! I'd hate to be on a bad trip and see that....

Check it out:

I don't see what the big deal is. I mean I don't think Carnival created him for the purpose of selling cruises. I actually think it's a somewhat cute idea for the children's program, maybe the 5-8 set or so. He isn't nearly scary as that gesture, IMO. I only thing very young children will be afraid, such as around 3, but then again, they're afraid of ALMOST ALL mascots. I mean it's a pretty good idea for families, and he might catch on with most cruisers. Also, I'm sure the Mrs. would rather have her husband take a picture with Freddy than with one of the dancers.

He suits his purpose imo, but that doesn't mean to say I want to meet him. I think the 'ears' are a good idea. I did expect him to be rather more OTT than he is, at least the clothes are normal. Might get quite hot in there though.
Very young kids are terrified of the characters at Disney even though they 'know' them. They scream and run away in the main until they are about 18 months old+, [obviously there are exceptions].

Draiker we can’t all be the courageous types , young kids may run away or be scared of him (I would as well !) but poor Freddy, I can’t help imagining the horrible things some rebelling teenagers might do to him!

Best, Onno

PS these types always make me wonder who is in the suite, or maybe it is better not to know.

This mascot is absolutely horrible! It is their new mascot, but they have it for quite a while as I have seen this Freddy thing months ago already. Costa has a mascot too, caled Squok and they have it for a few years now. I personally don't see this mascot-thing as a problem -as these mascots mostly will be in the kid's club onboard and are rarely used in advertorials.

Daft Canadians maybe.. see the
job advert. All childrens' counsellors on NCL have been Canadian [College grads] with a very few exceptions. Is it the same on Carnival, or other lines sailing from the US? A Canadian thing? Topgun booting out the younger generation

You won't be able to avoid them. If they don't see you out participating in activities, they'll come to your cabin and get you.

This is also a golden opportunity for the ships photographers to be out further taking taking those cute photographs , you with the ship"s mascot. Be aware. Another money making idea.

Oh well, beats the "pirate" found on other ships.

No, I seriously think he's a pretty cool mascot. I mean that. He will surely find a place in the children's program, and maybe even all over. His funnel wing ears are very well thought out. And, unlike the pirates, he reconizes formal nights. Freddy actually is getting me to think about going on Carnival again. I've always wanted to go on the Holiday. She's my dad's second favourite ship, second to Norwegian Dawn.( Which he got to take a tour of and a 1 night cruise on.) Anyway I'm geussing Freddy will be on the 17 newer Carnival ships for now, the Holiday and Celebration are probobly the other 2 that he'll come on at the end of the year.

I don't think that Freddy is too bad. I showed my two year old the picture of Freddy and asked him what he thought and he said that he looked funny, not scary, but funny. Carnival has had more SCARY mascots in the past...like the one pictured below.
