Now I know this is slightly off the topic of ships, but not really becase it might help you if you have to fly over to somewhere to catch the ship - see I have tried to tie it in!

Anyway, I am flying over to the good old USA in July and was wondering what is the best way to get a FREE upgrade! I am going with Continental and at the moment the "business class" seats don't seem to be selling that well so hopefully there will be some empty ones sooo when I go and check in how will I wangle my way into business class! Any tips, tricks of the trade etc are welcome!!!

Chat up the gal at the check-in counter - give her a big smile and a wink!

Lots of luck getting a free upgrade.

The last time I flew Continental in Business class, the foot rest was broken, the tv and sound system didn't work, no fresh water, tea or coffee, because the water lines were frozen or something and we paid BIG BUCKS for this. Continental's compensation was $100.00US voucher for daughter and I. We threw them in the trash!

Your chances of getting an upgrade are slim to none. Hate to be so blunt but it's the truth. Airlines no longer upgrade just because you are nice, or dressed well, or even kiss up to the agent. It's all about *paid* upgrades or using frequent flyer miles, or some other hardship that you endured on a previous flight. It used to be you could show a business card, and if you had some connection to the travel industry (cruise, hotel, air, etc.) you might get upgraded. Those days are also long gone.

The last person I upgraded to First Class were two returning US Army soldiers from Iraq. I just happened to have seats open in first... a rarity these days.

Be prepared to sit in coach, and if for some reason you are able to wiggle your way up to business or first, all the better.
