I think RCI and Princess's captain performs the ceremony. A wedding onboard the RCI's Voyager-class ships or Princess's Grand-class ships should be nice...

What type of legalities would prevent a Carnival Captain from performing a wedding on board ship?

MagnmPI, I presume because a Carnival Captain might could have an other nationality (Italian)?
But on the other hand, I witnessed an Japanese wedding in Tunis performed by an Italian Captain so... But I think it has something to do with that.

A marriage license has to be from the local jurisdiction, so would have to be in port or within the territorial waters of wherever the license was obtained [and the person carrying out the ceremony is registered to do so].

I believe at one time, maybe still so? that the Capt on Grand Princess was the only captain legally able to perform an actual wedding whilst at sea. Under what Country's or State's jurisdiction I haven't a clue, but would guess Florida.

Having said that, I recall Capt Warwick marrying his daughter on QE2 in Boston. There is a webpgae somewhere, as the ceremony was due to have been in NYC, but due to 9/11 was transferred with a bit of paperwork that needed sorting to Boston.

Just found the page "Wedding on Queen Elizabeth 2" here.

Pam

I have researched it and I think Grand Princess is the only cruise line that the captain is allowed to marry people at sea. I think in Canadian waters you can be married at sea... but Im not sure. We are going to be married in port before the ship sails. We just haven't decided if we are going on Carnival or Royal Caribbean. It will probably be carnival.. on their new boat Glory.. I hear it's going to be really nice!!

This topic seems to come up time and again.

Why ruin a perfectly good cruise by getting married.

I think they call it in oxymoron. I learned of the expression from the O J Simpson trial

Perhaps I can help a little. We've just come back from the Coral Princess and I asked the Master what was the reason only some Princess ships are Registered in Hamilton, Bermuda. Very simple answer, it's those with the Wedding Chapels (Grand, Golden.Island, and Coral etc.) because Bermuda has legislation allowing the Master to perform the ceremony. He was off to do one right after lunch and mentioned that the chapel has all the latest electronic gismos for transmitting the ceremony live.

Hey Alicia,

Some additional info, found in the Berlitz' Ocean Cruising & Cruise ship's guide 2003:

The ship(Golden Princess, Grand Princess)also features a Wedding Chapel (a live webcam can relay ceremonies via the internet). The ship's captain can legally marry (American) couples, due to the ship's Bermuda registry and a special dispensation (This should, however, be verified when in the planning stage, and may vary according to where you reside). Princess Cruises offers three wedding packages: Pearl, Emerald, Diamond- the fee includes registration and official marriage certificate. However, to get married and take your close family members and entourage with you on your honeymoon is going to cost a lot. The "Hearts and Minds"Chapel can also be used for "renewal of vows" ceremonies.

Interesting.

When Princess did away with the Liberian flag, the only ship with a wedding chapel in the fleet was GRAND, but CROWN was also registered in Bermuda at that time. Always found that a little odd, though now as A'ROSA BLU she is British-registered again.

The Crown was originally registered in Italy, Palermo if I remember correctly, because of the Italian subsidy requirements.
Regal was the same.

She went from Italian to Liberian registry in 1992, to Bermudan in 2000 to British in 2002.

I worked on Carnival for 7 months and there were alot of wedding on the ship. It is ussually done on port days in american ports(not sure why) mainly st tomas. its done on port days so you dont have other passengers in the way. and you can book rooms. for the recieption, photos and the ceremony and dance. they have photographers on the ship and packages you can buy. there are people who set up everything from the food and bev dept. and a aft lounge tech who does music and a mic for the recepition (@45bucks a hr) and you can hire a DJ for the dance. or hire a band(jazz trio or whatever)there is a wedding corodinater to make sure everything goes smoothly. She can be adivesed threw the Hotel Director. hope this helps

I would imagine in Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Hawaii, Vermont, and Belgium the captain can perform weddings and civil unions for same gender couples
