Just woundering if any recent NCL cruises liked their cruises. We were on the Norweigan Crown in 1998 and while it was a nice cruise we were a little dissapointed in the food at the buffet area and the room stewardess never made any animals out of towels like they do on Carnival. Specifically we just booked the Norwegian Majesty out of Charleston for Nov. 15. We are a liitle concerned cause they seems to still be mixed reviews on the Freestyle cruising thing. Does anybody know how the food is on the Majesty and do they really have an ice cream bar on it? We loved the ice cream bar on our last HAL cruise! Thanks for any info!

The roomstewardess never made animals out of the towels... ...Come on, as if that's so important.

i had a tour aboard the "norwegain sky" yesterday and i have been on a lot of beautiful ships......i was very surprised and impressed on the lay-out and interior designing of this ship......the last NCL cruise i did was way back in 93 aboard the "dreamward"....and that was'nt a good cruise......things have changed and i intend on booking a voyage before she becomes an american flagged vessel....i really liked her.....jeff

Yes!!! I know the towels is not such a big deal....my POINT was that when some of the little things are missing, it all adds up in the end. Our cruise on the Crown in 98 had a few little things like that missing and I was interested if NCL was paying more attention to the little things, service wise, that add up in the end.

I've only ever had one stewardess who did animal towels, that was on N. Dawn. Cute, yes, but time spent doing that could have been spent working [not that I had any complaint about something missed out]. I don't really think whether or not anyone gets shaped towels is an indication of anything other than a bit of 'fun'.

We were on the Norway this past July. No towel animals, the worst room steward we had in six cruises. I also thought the food was lacking-compared to Royal Carribean or Carnival.

I did a SS Norway cruise in November. The food was good, the waiters friendly. The cabin was well kept up and the stewardess also very pleasant, though no towel animals either

no personal offense to the person posting the "towel animal" comment, but I do have a question... Why is it that people think that these animals made of terry cloth make or break a cruise? I am often on many cruise boards and this subject comes up time and time again. I just don't get it. Perhaps if I had cruised Carnival I could understand the excitment. Those who have cruised aboard Carnival, have you found the cruise nice> How about the ambiance? I have always been afraid to cruise thier line because of the old "fun ship" marketing campaign. I thought the campaign made the cruise line look tacky. Ever since I have avoided Carnival. Any opinion?

I'll be honest, most of the people that like to knock Carnival have never tried it. Granted, many of the Carnival stereotypes have been well earned over the years, but Carnival has really improved itself especially over the last 4-5 years. New ships that are more spacious, decor that while still "original" has been toned down a bit, better food, more variety, improved service, and more options. Carnival continues to keep the trademarks that made it #1 to begin with.... large cabins, informal atmosphere, great entertainment, activities for all ages.

While many of the so-called "premium" lines have been taking a dive as of late (Princess, Celebrity, HAL), Carnival has slowly and quietly improved it's product.

I'll never say Carnival is for everyone, it's not. But I will say the food, service, entertainment, and even the ship on my last CARNIVAL PRIDE cruise were all excellent. When I say excellent, all the points I mentioned were on par or better then Princess, NCL, RCI, HAL, Cunard, and even Celebrity. My previous experience on Carnival prior to the PRIDE was on INSPIRATION several years earlier, and it was dismal. What a huge difference I saw between the two cruises. Of course CARNIVAL PRIDE is part of the Spirit Class of ships which I think are superbly designed and more suited to an upscale experience.

My recommendation if you are thinking about Carnival... stick with the newer ships, especially the Spirit Class. I think you might be surprised.

I'm sailing on the new CARNIVAL CONQUEST in July. She is the largest and newest of the Carnival fleet. She is not part of the Spirit Class of ships, so I hope I still like her. I'll be sure to report back.

Best,
Ernie

ps - while towel animals can be a fun surprise when you return to your cabin, they don't make or break a trip for me. Many cruise lines now have towel animals, although it's hit or miss (almost as if the cabin steward worked on Carnival in the past). I've seen them on RCI, Princess, NCL, and even Celebrity.

I agree. When I heard my parents had booked us on the ELATION, I was afraid that I was not going to have a great time. I had heard others say the service and entertainment was not what they expected, but I enjoyed everything. The "Carnival product" is steadily improving and I am hoping to try a Spirit-class ship soon.........

Thanks for your comments on NCL. Hope it is at least as good as our last Carnival cruise. Regarding the Carnival comments, I say... If you haven't tried it, don't knock it!

NCL was great when we sailed the Majesty in January. Loved the smaller size of the ship. Not quite as small as my all time favorite Leeward though. Anyway, freestyle worked for us. First time trying it since NCL was taken over by Star. Liked eating when I was hungry and not rushing to dress. Food was very good. Loved the Italian dinner in the forward observatory. They did a good job on the stretch with this ship. Public areas aren't broken-up like the Wind and Dream and no sewage smells like the Wind is known for. Staff was really friendly. Got much attention when I wore my old Seaward, Sunward, Norway and Leeward t-shirts. Staff had many memories to share. Many cruisers I met sailed on the Norway the week before or were going after. NCL must be doing something right.

We sailed the Celebrity Zenith the year before and it was a little larger. Ship looked new compared to the Majesty even though they are the same age. Celebrity was just a little too stuffy for us. Celebrity seems to attract mostly retirees at least from Tampa. No shorts in dining room for breakfast or lunch was a turnoff. I like the variety of ages on NCL. It may just be short verses longer cruises sway the demographics.

Can't compare to Carnival as I never consider them. I am not willing to try them either as the interior shots on the web are just too intense to put it nicely. Really get turned off by travel agents that try to sway me towards them all the time. AAA is the worst. They act like NCL doesn't exist.

Hopefully NCL will come to Tampa someday when the newbuilds and rebuilt ships are finished. They have ignored this port for too long! We need something to replace the short cruises the Regal Empress offered also. Carnival is the only one that offers them and the 4 nighter just makes one stop in Cozumel! Very unimaginative itinerary.

My room steward on the Norway-July 2000 was the worst in six cruises. No towel animals-but worst yet-a disregard for safety-there were three adults in the stateroom and only two adult life jackets and one child's. This was brought to his attention the first night-he said "No problem"-was brought to his attention the second night-same response-by the third night I had given up. We did get three bath towels-but only two of everything else-two hand towels, washcloths, glasses-although there were three of us in the cabin. On the last night I was stressed changing money into $20 bills-I saw him in the hall on the way to dinner and said I would be back after with the gratuity-he said no problem-I could see him in the morning-every other room steward was in the hall when we returned from dinner except him! I, who usually overtip these hardworking and third world people undertipped him-I tipped him for 2 1/2 people rather than three-to send a message-I was concerned about his lack of regard for our safety-not the "pampering".

We've sailed on the Norway 14 times since '97 and have seen food, service, etc. go from very good, to not as good (during the transition period after the Star take-over), to the best ever on a back-to-back cruise this past January. The food was excellent, our waiters and busboys all good, and the room steward so good that we requested him for the 2nd week. We could have done without the animals though. With 2 swans, a rabbit, an elephant and a monkey we were running out of room for our menagerie.

I have never sailed NCL, so I can't comment about them, however having sailed both Carnival and RCI, I like RCI much better. I have sailed on the Carnival Legend as well as the Navigator of the Seas. I like the decor of RCI much more, the decor is a bit loud for my taste on Carnival. On the Legend I constantly had the feeling the crew was only concerned with trying to find anyway to separate me and my money. This is only my opinion. I did get an opportunity to visit NCL's Dawn and found the decor to be nice. The only criticism other that the hull art is that the restaurants all tend to be very small and a bit ultra modern.

Just got off the Dawn 14 repo from Miami to NYC - great itinerary - nice outside cabin with efficient layout for about $90 per day - best bathroom on a ship in 14 cruises various lines. Service and food just ok - had $200 shipboard credit from previous problems, so we used that for the service charges for alternative restaurants, some wine etc. Great cabin steward. We knew that we would get kind of a low to midrange experience as far as service and food. Entertainment was pretty good also. All in all a very nice trip - had reasonable expectations and these were enhanced by the great itinerary. Miami - sea day - Mo Bay - sea day - Aruba - Curacao - Dominica - Tortola - St. Thomas - at sea - at sea - Newport R.I. - Martha's Vineyard - NYC. Feel free to ask any other questions.
