From the CruiseNews
"Royal Olympic Cruises has finally given in to the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and agreed to change its name to Royal Olympia Cruises. According to United States Federal law, the USOC has the exclusive right to the word "Olympic" and certain variations of that word in the United States."
I am disgusted; I think I said so before when ROC were forced to change the name of their ships. Not sure why I feel so strongly about it either, but I do.
How can USFL grant exclusive rights to a word to the USOC when that word is Greek anyway and anyone or thing from Olympia is 'Olympic'? If anything a Greek company has more right to the use than anyone or thing outside Greece. So is Olympic Airways next? Olympic Nat'l Park, Olympic College?..wondering about the Olympic Gym in my home town.
Pam..just venting

It is completely ridiculous.I think the USOC should think about it, I mean they never made any claims to the Olympics.I believe that they have no right to do this and should have their limits of power.

Yet another case of too many bottom feeders looking to justify their exorbitant fees.

This really is ridiculous! What was the motivation for the USOC usurption of this word? Were they afraid that someone would confuse the cruise line with the international athletic competetion? I mean, come on, there're obviously two separate entities! Are they going to force Athena Onassis to change the name of the Olympic Shipping Corp.? Will Cunard no longer be able to use the RMS Olympic in their promotional literature? Will the term "Olympic-Sized" be barred from application to any non-USOC affiliated pools? How far is too far for these people?

When the Olympics were held in Atlanta they made a local restaurant owner change the name of his restaurant because he had the name Olympic in it.
This was an established restaurant that was open for years. I thought this was lousy.

Stupid decision ! The word 2Olympic" has Greek origins and ROC should in no way accept to change their name ! Several ferries do also have names with the word "olympic" in and nothing has be changed on that either.
How about posting e-mails to this USOC about the matter to put a bit pressure on them ??

In fact this sad and annoying situation was repeated 1 or 2 years ago when a Greek Ferry company were forced to change the name of the first new generation ferry entering their fleet.
The original name was Olypmic Palace.
