Well maybe not the end for the cruise line, but maybe the service that has earned legions of devotees over the years.

Over the past month I have received a number of reports from people just back from a Holland America cruise saying that things have changed. The service is not as good...the food was lacking...they were starting to cut corners...etc.

I know we have had some folks on HAL cruises over the past few months and would like to hear from them.

How did your trip compare to others? Are things really going downhill or are these reports the normal exceptions to the rule that you get with any cruise line?

We were just on the Maasdam last week (12/1 - 12/8). Overall, we didn't notice a difference in service.

The food actually seemed better to us this time - there were more choices that appealed to us compared with last time.

The staff was very friendly and attentive - our wine steward brought Dad 2 Manhattans every night with dinner, without Dad having to ask. Dad did ask the first night for a second, then the next night Imam asked him he he wanted one, then just brought them every night when he saw us enter the dining room.

This was only our second cruise with HAL, so we really aren't true "veterans"....but we were very happy with our cruise!

Our last cruise with Holland America in January was close to a disaster. To cap it, the pursers office and Hotel manager failed to put things right during the cruise.

I am more familiar with this line when we cruised on the old Volendam, Veendam and Statendem with no more than 6-700 passengers.

I do not think that we can expect the type of service that Holland America used to provide.
Since that cruise, we travelled transatlantic on Sunbird and to Bermuda on Nordic Prince in September. Both cruises were much better than with HAL.

We did finally get an onboard credit of $300.00 from HAL for a future cruise and were tempted to give them another try. In the end we decided to play safe and are booked on Sunbird again in January.

I think that when all is considered, most of the Carnival Corporation ships are run in a cookie cutter style, the only difference is the age and income of the passengers.

After sailing with HAL 4 times we were upset enough to try other major lines. We have been on Celebrity Princess RCL & NCL and find enough to complain about, and praise, on all of them. We crossed the Atlantic on the Golden Princess in Sept and the beef was the worst ever... the waves were so high 6 or 7 windows blew out and the ship was late getting to NY and many missed their planes. On the Noordam in MArch for 14 days and the food was superb but accomodations were second rate (in steerage were I veg). I would sail on HAL again but Celebrity offers better rates at this time. We took the Horizon from Baltimore B-B to Tampa and the service & food was not quite up to two previous voyages on the Horizon. Prices are lower now but I think all lines are cutting corners.

We sailed on both the Statendam and Rotterdam during the past year and found absolutely no reduction in service or quality of food. On the contrary, the food and service were never better. We look forward to sailing on the new Zuiderdam in January and the Rotterdam again in September. Any reports of the demise of HAL are grossly premature.

I just returned from the Amsterdam.
I found the service just fine, except for slow coffee in the main dining room during both breakfast and dinner. I did talk to a pax that had major complaints. Seems there was no bus boy in their section.
There was a group of about 35. They asked to sit together but this did not happen. The first night they noticed that many of the large tables on the lower level were empty and asked to have the group moved so they could all sit together. They were told no. The guy I talked to was madder than h*** over this. These tables stayed empty the entire cruise.

Service in the Casino Bar, Piano Bar and Explorers Lounge was great.
My room steward was wonderful.

The quality of the food was fine with me. Mr. Gizmo thought the food was better on the Volendam. The creamed soups tasted like paste so I stuck to the chilled soups. In the past I loved the creamed soups. The last night there was nothing much on then menu that I liked and would have gone to the Lido if it were not the last night. I did order a cajun rib eye steak that turned out fine but it was the only thing on the menu that I would consider.

Are they cutting corners? Maybe. I noticed some things usually offered were not on the menu. There was never any shrimp for a main entree. No crab legs either.

The Lido never changed anything at the sandwich bar. They had egg salad and tuna salad everyday. The lunch meats never changed. On past cruises, these selections changed. We had shrimp salad, chicken salad and different lunch meats. Was this just the chef or cutting corners?
A seafood smorgesborg in the Lido was listed on the Daily program. I couldn't find any seafood, Only a seafood salad that was there everyday and a seafood skewer, probably left over from the barbeque the night before. All other selections were meat. Where was the seafood?

I'm a long time HAL cruiser. I found the line is cutting in many areas. I've only had one bad cruise with HAL. It was the Mar02 trip on the Statendam (Hawaii) The service was terrible, the worst beef I've ever tasted and terrible veggies. We were so disappointed we cancelled our booked 64 day Volendam cruise to Asia. Later we decided to try HAL again and cruised the Ryndam to Mexico (Oct02). A difference of night to day. The beef was great and service excellent. There are still cuts, but new or recent cruisers may not notice. We were so contented we decided to go on the Ryndam again.(Jan03). We've sailed with other cruise lines and still place HAL #1 within the cruise lines we've tried. I guess 1(one) bad HAL cruise out of 24 (twenty-four)isn't bad. Take care.

In the past year and a half, we cruised on Maasdam six times and Zaandam twice.

All eight of our cruises were wonderful with fabulous service and excellent food.
The ships were in excellent condition and very well maintained.

The flowers were as lovely as ever and we did not see cutbacks at all....and we were looking for them.

On Zaandam, we had a lovely seafood buffet in Lido for lunch that was terrific. Loads of crab claws, mussels, shrimp, and I don't now recall what else. We did not have that on Maasdam. Perhaps because of ten day vs. seven day cruises?
Chef Mike Mahn on Maasdam is one of the best and we had wonderful food from his kitchen. I didn't see any cutback in menu choices....

Oh boy, I'm sorry to hear about that. We wanted to book on the ZAANDAM for the last cruise before it leaves
for Alaska. Much to say, I was surprised the price they
were asking for an inside stateroom, over $400.00. I wanted to experience a cruise on HAL ship. Now, I see it's mirroring what I went through on the SENSATION on Sept. 30th this year.

I'm confused - to you think that is a great price or too much?

DAMBROSI: I can't see your September experiences, as explained by you, being mirrored on HAL in any of the above posts?

US$400 is about CA$650 - never seen that price advertised in Canada! With or without Port Taxes?

You perhaps mean that available inside cabins were US$400 more than on the Sensation. Rates on all ships vary by season and demand.

We sailed the Rotterdam in November just past - short of being a 'total nit picker with notebook in hand' we found little to complain about.

A few cutbacks - yes there were - the photographers were a real pain and we were not impressed with the Cruise Director or his Assistant. As for the food, we found it very good and our Waitstaff was well trained in HAL ways.

My experience with HAL over the past year or so (at least since Sept 2001) is that HAL has been reducing services and cutting corners while still trying to maintain the level of personal service that made the reputation of the company. Faced with a large expansion of the fleet and reduced demand HAL has been cutting, slowly at first but the cumulation of such cuts are starting to be notiable.

Among the changes over the past two years are the elimination of the Passport to Fitness program and its replacement by a series of fee per session gym sessions (Yoga ,Pilates etc), the elimination of the position of Social Hostess in many of their cruises and reduction to the number of cruise staff, the elimination in the nember of musicians aboard and it the case of many of their shorter cruise (the Maasdam recently)the elimination of the Show Orchestra and its replacement by canned music for the production shows, the elimination of many of the èxtras in the cabin such as the famous HAL tote bags and Dutch tiles in many of their short cruises, the reduction in the number of bar staff and dining room staff that is starting to slow down the famous service that built the company, some reductions to Front Office staff and indeed in talking to some HAL staff, in all departments through out the ship. At the same time some standards are starting to slip such as more frequent and annoying (too cute) announcements for bingo and other events and reductions in many of the small features that previously charterized Holland America. The cost also of many of the concession services such as the Spa, Gym, Photo and Shops has also gone up but I am not sure that HAL has much control over that. The addition of the new extra pay alternative restauarants, The Pinnacle, aboad the Statendam and Ryndam shows also the direction that HAL is probably moving towards.

Having stated all that, certainly in many of the essentials, such as food and accomodation that same level of service is there and with some new ships, Holland America has expanded their distinations and cruising possibilities. Faced with its rapid expansion and the slower cruise market, Holand America, along probably with other cruise companies has been forced to revisit their cost and where possible reduce them in order to reflect the new realities in the cruising world. It still maintains a fine product(although not for everyone) with excellent ships, well trained staff, excellent experienced management and a good reputation to uphold.

Maybe I am easily pleased but I found the cruise I took in July/Aug on Noordam to have very good service. The food was perfect and there was always something that I liked. The staff could not be more attentive.

OK in an old ship there were problems with water shortages the first night and there was a problem with leaking water one day but that is only to be expected.

At the moment I wouldn't dream of travelling with anyone else.

Brian - the tote bags & tiles were given to us on our recent Rotterdam cruise. The only announcements made, other than the Captain's daily Voice from the Bridge, were for Bingo, which are still annoying, especially by the gal who was announcing them and her irritating voice.
A lot of the problems with the shortage of staff is the fact that the ones back home in Indonesia, are having trouble getting their US VISAS. I had been told this before, but it was confirmed by our Cabin Steward, who was the best.

We booked an aft suite on the Zuiderdam in January, as there were some great discounts available and always wanted to try a suite. We are very much looking forward to this cruise with hopes of seeing the same service and quality we experienced during our last cruise with HAL in '99 on the Veendam. We'll be sure to post our impressions on our return.

On second thoughts there was one difference and that was that there was no fruit in the cabin. In my opinion a minor thing as usually there is no time to eat the fruit in the cabin.

Ooooops I should have clarified that cruise on the
ZAANDAM. It was over $400.00
for an inside stateroom for
a 4 day cruise, April 12th sailing, before it goes to Alaska. I've seen better prices for 4 days on NCL, RCI and even our dear departed Premier. The Sept. 30th cruise on the SENSATION
review should be there. It was just this yr.

Nigel,

After 911 I read that fruit would not be in the cabins, but you could ask for it. We sailed the Veendam and asked to have fruit each day. No problem. I just got off the Amsterdam and fruit was in the suite. We asked for certain fruit and we had it everyday.

Sail7Seas,
The seafood lunch in the Lido was missing all the seafood. I searched both sides! This was a 10 day cruise.
