If you could start your own cruiseline, what will you call the company and what ship will you use? Also, what will you name the ship?

I have thought that someone should bring the "club ship" concept to the North American market. Something like Aida or Ocean Village- with brand new ships of the 60-70,000 ton range for activity minded adults- lower cost, dinning options, casual atmosphere.

I would call it OceanBlue Voyages (rather than "cruises" or "cruise line" the word "voyages" give the idea that this is not like other cruises- there is adventure and activity involved.)

OceanBlue Voyages

Ships:
blueDolphin
blueMarlin
blueCoral
blueSurf

How does the club ship concept actually work?

Club ships have multiple dinning options but only one small formal dinning room. Other dinning areas are buffet style. A significant amount of space on the ship is devoted to exercize and activities... fewer lounges and more gyms, sports areas, pools...

There are no formal nights, the shore excursions tend to be for a younger crowd (mountain biking, rock climbing...).

Think about the type of person who would drive a Jeep Wrangler- young, educated, outdoors type... that is who this cruise product would be for.

I would call my Line "Dolphin Cruise Line" (DCL), I would buy the Oceanbreeze and refit her with a Larger pool, advertise her"Seaworthiness" and use her in the Summer for Longer cruises out of NY to down south for a few days then across the Pnanma Canal and then stop at west coast then on to Hawaii for a few days then in reverse back to NY. I would paint her blue as in her Premier days. I would also buy the island breeze, rename her Big Red Boat, paint her the brighest red i could find and resume the Cnaveral Bahamas thing with an occasional longer and change of itinerary thrown in to mix things up a bit. I would also buy the Norway, refit, update, repaint her blue to match the Oceanbreeze and use her year round from a place like Jax or maybe Savannah for year round cruises to Carribean but find ports that could accomidate her docking without tendering(don't know where that would be in Carrebean though).

I would start a Gay and Lesbian cruise line with the 2 original Love Boats. One for men other for women. I would charter Rembrandterdam, make it a co-ed ship, allow breeders to sail with the understanding that they will be a minority.

Pacific/Island Princess: New England/Canada itinerary from NYC in summer, and Southern Carribean from San Juan in winter.

Rembrandterdam, deploy from Amsterdam: Baltics in Summer, Balearics in winter from Barcelona, Canary islands from Lisbon, spring and fall.

Hash bar on all ships and 'high culture' entertainment, plus workshops and seminars on LGBT issues.

Hi desired,

Somehow I thought you would come up with a cruise company for the gay cruise market. I must say your ideal cruise company would have a magnificent fleet of the best designed cruise ships ever. And you could bet I will reinstate the traditional send off and wave bon voyage each time Rembrandt/Rotterdam departs from Amsterdam. If I where you I would patent your debatable hash bar before someone else takes the idea (you know that in Amsterdam the hash bar is named coffee shop). As Kaiser said now only a suitable name!

Best, Onno

Onno,

Hash bars:
With these 3 classic ships I need a draw and another profit center in addition to the bars, casino, and shore excursions

Names of ships;

Pacific Princess 1, Eros or Apollo
Island Princess 1, Sapphos or Isis

Rembrandt, Rembrandterdam
she's more than a ship, she is an institution.
Her heritage and dignity would be treated with the utmost of respect.

I like skyej's idea of OceanBlue Voyages.

This will probably be of no suprise to anyone but if I had my own cruise line it would be "Great Lakes Navigation Co." The name is a tribute to some of the famous Great Lakes passenger steamship operators such as Northern Navigation Co. Only ships under 78' wide can fit through the St. Lawrence Seaway. Instead of building a new ship I would purchase the ex-Golden Odyssey. There is something about that ship I really like that I don't think any newbuild could duplicate. If not that I would purchase the Cape May Light, Cape Cod Light, and Spirit of '98 as they all somewhat resemble the old lakes passenger ships. And the Cape May and Cape Cod Light are almost brand new. The cruises of this company would be very destination intensive, while still be very comfortable and relaxing. Instead of just the usual port cities the ships would also visit state and national parks on the lakes.

My thoughts:

Exotic Classic Voyages (Club Ships):

Ships:
Exotic Viking (RCCL's Sun Viking)
Exotic Ocean-newbuild(unfinished
Regent Sky)

Poseidon Cruises (Premium):

Ships: Poseidon Rennaisance (R7)

Posts here have been concerned with the esoteric game of names. I thought I might move from fantasy to practicality in this post. I believe the following could be accomplished in a logical business plan.

My Line would be called, for openers, “The Atlantic Coast Line,” Or "The Atlantic Coastal Express" The operational theme, based on my railroad experience would be “The Route of the Atlantic Packets.” I proposed scheduled small luxury-ship service between Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Norfolk, VA. Reliable schedules would, I believe, would appeal both to tourists and vacationers, and to business travelers and other expense-account types.

I would purchase and operate the “Cape Cod Light,” and the “Cape May Light” They would be renamed the “Northeast Packet” and the “Chesapeake Packet.”

Features of the “Northeast Packet” would be: A tri-weekly sailing at 5:00 PM from Boston, via the Cape Cod Canal, to New York. Comfortable cabins, fine dining, a good bar, and entertainment would be featured. Arrival at New York would be circa 8:AM. (Possibly later if a leisurely breakfast were to be included).

This would be a re-creation of the overnight steamers of the Eastern Steamship Lines, which offered comfortable and reliable service even before the days of radar.

Fares would be the equivalent of First Class Air, or Coach Air, plus the cost of an overnight Hotel. Possibly also competitive with Amtrak Acela First Class. [Note: Amtrak’s “Night Owl” no longer offers sleeping car service between Boston and New York.] Return schedule would also be tri-weekly.

The “Chesapeake Packet.” would re-create the services of the luxury “Norfolk Night Boat” of the "Old Bay Line,"from Baltimore to Norfolk, VA. Given the capabilities of the newer ships, I would originate this route at Philadelphia, operating via the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal and offer similar services.

Weekend sailings could involve either a more leisurely passage on both routes, with possible intermediate stops, or two day through voyages between Norfolk and Boston, and vice versa.

I think it is doable.

I have not been in market research, but as an affordable luxury alternative to the discomforts of air travel, it is worth a look.

The brand-new ships exist, and are currently unsold. And of course, they are “Jones Act Compliant!

Any takers or backers?

Eastern Steamship Lines formerely ran year-around service Boston-New York. In the summer they used the sisterships "Boston" amd "New York," which had "summer-type" cabins more like Riverboats. In the Winter they used vessels with more "interior" cabins, namely the "Yarmouth,""Evangeline,""St. John," and "Acadia," which were used in their Boston-Maritime Canada services. Of course, major northeasters and hurricaines caused cancellations.

Their route took them through the Cape Cod Canal, and Long Island Sound, which were relatively smooth waters.

I would not propose ships in ferry configuration. Too much interior space is used for vehicles, and the turnaound time is longer. I do not see the service as a supplement to I-95 congestion like the Amtrak Auto-train. A more feasible analogue would be the Norwegian Coastal Express.

Besides, I focus on the ships already built and unused!
