A passenger on board the Carnival Legend was arrested by Portland, Maine police last Tuesday after she allegedly spent her day ashore participating in an "illegal shore excursion". According to police reports, the 37 year old female passenger spent her time ashore shoplifting clothes from a number of shops in the Old Port area of Portland.

She is now being held in the local county jail on $5,000 bail. It is not clear if her husband knew that his wife had been arrested as he re-boarded the cruise ship and continued the cruise as scheduled Tuesday evening.

I saw that on Joe's Cruise News and thought to myself "stupid woman". Who does she think pays for these stolen goods in the long run - we the public. Maybe her husband did the right thing by re-boarding the ship and continuing the cruise by himself - maybe also, this isn't the first time she has shop-lifted and he's teaching her a lesson. Who knows.

Update: Actually, it turns out that her friends were able to scrape together the $5000 bail at the last minute and she also left on the Legend. Not sure if that means she loses the $5000.

...before I read it properly, I thought that she had been dumb enough to seal from the onboard shops!

Seems that ' shoplifting' in this day and age is frequently considered to be a disease - the wife of a so called VIP in our neck of the woods was so afflicted - suitable amends were made and Ithe lady was 'off the hook' - a similar situation perhaps? Money talks the world over!

The lady is very fortunate that she wasn't arrested in some foreign port. Pardon my obvious bias but I just can't see a HAL passenger doing this.

I would have thought that with the demographics on HAL it would have been MORE likely.

I don't think much of this woman's friends. I wouldn't have paid a penny, cent or whatever to get her bail, even if it were my best friend.
I am surprised she was allowed to leave on a ship, I would have thought that would have been outside the terms, but I suppose it would depend on where she lived?

Green, it can be a disease, or rather a condition. I forget the name, clepto?, Kleptomania? something or other. As a teenager I had a friend whose mother has this. She would get home from shopping and find her bag full of stuff she hadn't bought, and have no idea how it got there. She would rush back to the shops and give it back! Something to do with memory loss.. I can't remember the detail. But she was known in the local area by the shopkeepers, who knew if she 'took' anything she'd be back later returning it. She was 'certified' or whatever you call it, and lucky in that local people knew her problem and were understanding.

I hate to tell you this but when I was on a HAL cruise a couple of years ago,2 female passengers were arrested and thrown into the brig for stealing from the onboard shops. They were in possession of over $3,000 worth of stolen goods, mainly jewelry.According to one of the shop managers I was talking to,these women had actually come on board specifically to rob the ship.Luckily, they were caught before any more could be lifted.

This shop manager also told me that the shops lose a great deal of merchandise through passengers shoplifting on board.I now know why there are often empty boxes etc amongst the watch/jewelry dispays! Anyone else notice this?

Don't doubt the story in any way but have to say that I've only noticed empty boxes on the 'junk' ring and watch 'take off' displays, the merchandise mostly in the $10- $25.00 range.....certainly not worth stealing. The real stuff is always under lock and key. An exception might be the $69.00 'brand name' watch sale.

Those $10.00 watches are pretty good value - I'm still using a Movado 'take-of' which I bought nearly 3 years ago and haven't yet needed to renew the battery! As for 'costume jewellery' rings, I’ve also bought a few of those over the years!

Green.....I was not talking about the cheap stuff when I mentioned the empty boxes.I meant the better quality gear that is usually sold on the longer cruises. As a matter of fact,I have a Seiko watch that I bought onboard, and had it appraised when I got home.I was most surprised to be told that it was worth $400CDN....I only paid $50(part of a pair) and that was 3 years ago!Not exactly a 'knock-off'!!

As for the 2 women of whom I spoke earlier,I have no idea HOW they lifted what they lifted, only that they did!Certainly not the cheap stuff!

Yes Terri my husband and I were on Celebrity Galaxy in a shop where many items were jewelry. We noticed an older woman pushing items into her cruise tote. The store was poorly laid out. There were tie racks almost in front of the upscale costume jewelry area, obstructing the view from the checkout counter. This is the area that the woman was stealing from. Ironically, she was using the tote bag which is provided free of charge to all Celebrity guests for beach use. Bold she was I thought.

I must agree with you Terri Lee. During chats with shops personnel on HAL and Princess cruises they report there is a massive amount of shoplifting going on.

This event was in the Portland newspaper the day after the theft. The woman stole a $350 dress, wine and other things. She definetly had good taste but was not very smart. She was bailed out and allowed to continue on the cruise ship voyage.
