I think 'soft drink' is the correct non-regionally-biased term in the US as well.

li think they charge for soda as compared to tea or coffee because they have to bring on and store and refrigerate tons cans of soda. as compared to putting a box of tea bags on a shelf. im sure that the cans are more efficient then storing syrups, tanks of carbonation etc etc. remember you can always bring some of your own pop on board for in cabin use

Cnn's site don't have an option for 'other'. I do know some people who always say 'Pepsi' or 'Fanta'.

I'd say that Canadians and Australians are pretty similar - I want Coke that's what I ask for - Pepsi that's what I ask for - Ginger Ale, Schweppes or Canada Dry, that's what I ask for - we seem to order by brand name. Soda, Schweppes or Canada Dry, as has been said, is something you drink with a twist of lemon or lime - or put a splash of in your Macallan or Grouse!

Collectively they are referred to as 'soft drinks' - the term 'Soda' is, I think, used mainly in the US of A.

Here is the Scottish slant.

Coke is coke.
Pepsi is Pepsi.
Other varieties of dark substance are cola.
We don't have fizzy pop or soda (soda is fizzy water) but we do have ginger (nothing to do with flavour) and juice (not freshly squeezed fruit extract). I have even heard on occasion "Geez a bootle o' Barr Bru" which refers to our other national drink Irn Bru which everybody who visits should taste at least once!

Might I add you do not add anything to a decent Macallan except more Macallan.

We always have been a bit off the wall....must be the Haggis!
