Hi,
does the doctor change on every voyage or does the doctor remain on board for every journey the ship makes? Sorry for such an odd question i'm just curious. Also does anyone know the name of the doctor on The Caronia?

Don't know how it works on ships sailing from the UK but HAL ships Doctors sign on for a set time - maybe a month, six weeks whatever.

On our cruise through the Panama Canal we sat with the Doctor and his wife - they had done a roundtrip Alaska cruise starting and ending in Vancouver, then the Panama from Vancouver to Ft. Lauderdale and were staying on board for a 10 day Caribbean trip - 6 weeks all told. These Doctors are not retired - they are taking time out from their practice,

From American College of Emergency Physicians.

quote:
"The Cunard side of the company ( QE 2, Caronia, and eventually the new Queen Mary 2) employs only British registered doctors and nurses on full time contracts.

"The Seabourn Yachts employ doctors on 3-6 month contracts. Doctors should be registered to practice either in Europe or the USA and qualified in Family or Emergency Medicine. ACLS certification is required as is fluency in English.

I have e-mail contact information for Cunard's Medical Department. I am sure they know the doctor on Caronia - e-mail me if you need that info for medical reasons.

Hi Gaynor,

As Joe says, Cunard employ their own doctors and nurses.

For the last few years, when we've been on Vistafjord/Caronia the doctor was Dr. Peter Hawthorne. Of course, he may be on leave when you sail.

Regards, Colin.

When did you cruise with Cunard? Was it on the Caronia, if so, what voyage/s did you go on?

Hi, We've been on her twice as Caronia, this year to Spitzbergen and last year transatlantic via Norway and Iceland to New York, and four times as Vistafjord, transatlantic in '97 then back-to-backs in the Med later the same year and her final voyage - as Vistafjord - to the Canaries in '99.

We've also been on Cunard Princess, Cunard Crown Dynasty, Sagafjord, Royal Viking Sun, Sea Goddess II and QE2 four times. Do you get the impression that we like Cunard?

Regards, Colin.

"Was" and "is"?

Sagafjord and Caronia. Sister ships but not twins. Actually, come to think of it, probably more like non-identical twins.

Why, is a more difficult question. I think it's the atmosphere on board as much as anything else.
