Does anyone think Disney will order new ships?Perhaps a smaller one or 2 ships for California/Disneyland?I will try to make a sketch of what they might look like.Perhaps a bigger ship to switch places with the oringinal ships?

Maybe?

Maybe it will look more like an Ocean Liner than the QM2?

I don’t know if it’s true but I read some where that Disney Cruises was planning to order two new ships that are the same class as the existing Disney ships only slightly larger.

Best, Onno

I belief they would be the same design as Disney Magic and Disney Wonder only slightly longer/larger to accommodate more passengers. (and maybe other Disney figures hanging from the back side). I actually like the Disney ships not for the Disney trade elements but purely as a form. Quite exciting shapes and actually the concept behind the designs aren’t much different then that of Cunard’s QM2 both retro ships only different target groups.

I like the feature that appears to be a promenade that extends out the beam of the ship.Does anyone know if disney cruise lines has the usual daily cruise caper or newspaper of hosted activities, as I asked in another topic?

I read somewhere when the Magic came out that the ship's foghorn played "When You Wish Upon A Star" Is this true? I could imagine it not being good for a warning.Well, at is something quite special.

I agree. Actually I think their form is better than QM2, with its stubby single funnel.

I'm pretty much ready for the trip.Tommorrow is my last day home.I wonder where the captain is from.I love the Captain's dinner.I hope they don't try to replace it with a Mickey version.I mean he is great, but I think the captain deserves the dinner and show.

I will try to write a review, and thanks for wishing me a happy trip.I will also post about the cruise. The Disney Wonder looks nice, and I will be gone for a week,we booked the land package, too.I was despretely trying to sleep through the day, as I can never get a wink of sleep the night before departure. That didn't work, so I will be posting until about 7 or 8pm. Will I be one of the first members of this board to go on Disney Cruise Line? The seems pretty nice on the inside.Does anyone have a picture of the damage caused by the fire on the Magic.I know it's probobly fixed, but I was wondering what exactly how bad the funnel was damaged.

Hi-
Finally some mention of Disney Cruise lines on this board. We just sailed the Magic a few weeks ago and it was great. They do have the daily paper describing activities and yes, the "Mickey Whistle" does play that tune. If you have any questions let me know....Oh yeah, the formal night you meet Mickey, Minnie etc and not the captain. They did have a scheduled meet and greet all the top officers but we weren't able to meet the Captain as he was busy dealing w/a Cuban boat of refugees. Was quite interesting.

Well it does sound good. Now I am ready completely.I am sailing on the Wonder, and I doubt I'll miss the meet and greet captains show dinner, whatever it is.Your story almost sounds like that of the Celebration only it was a collision with a Cuban freighter. The Celebration was my first cruise.I love the trolley. My father, uncle, and aunt were supposed to go on the Celebration that exact date. They moved to an earlier date.My father now loves mocking the Celebration after 3 incidents. All well.I am quite excited.I'm already counting in hours, not days!

About adding more ships. There have been rumors for years (at least since 1999) that Disney was going to expand the fleet. At first rumors were that they would add a ship to the West Coast to serve Disneyland. Then the word was that Disney would expand in Europe with a ship to serve EuroDisneyland in France.

I even heard a year ago that Disney engineers (aka Imagineers) were developing conceptual designs for a new ship. But with the economic slowdown even the largest cruise companies are freezing orders for new ships. Right now I believe only 2 large cruise ship are due in 2005 and only 1 in 2006. I'm sure some orders will be added- but this represents a huge slowdown in cruise ship construction.

Hello Everyone
This may be my last post for about 8 days or so.I am hoping they make a smaller ship. The only fairly small or at least mid size newbuild is the Mistral class.I hope Disney makes some ships about the size of the Holiday class size, that size is perfect.

I just got back. All well, it had to end some time. The trip was wonderful! It was noticably better than Carnival. All,though Carnival is still decent in my book. The ship was great! Wonder-ful ! The activities came in a number much larger than Carnivals, and yet they remained somewhat more refined.Castaway Cay was beatiful. The cabin was larger than all previous ones on Carnival.I wish I could stay longer.Tommorrow is, I can't even type it.I heard Disney plans Voyager sized vessels soon.I could imagine that it would replace the Magic or Wonder for the Caribbean.I geuss one ship will be going to California/Disneyland. If so, I'll try to convince my parents for an early voyage. As promised in the "Who we are" thread I'm posting a photo of me, and many of the ship.I need instructions on how to do it. I don't even know how to send the photo to the Internet from the scanner! All in all, I can say easily it's wonderful.A great family vacation, and I can see it as a better choice for Carribean/Bahamas cruises than Carnival.

Welcome back and nice to hear you had a great time.
Interesting to hear Disney is planning to order new mega ships, was it official information? If you know more about the new ships I would love to hear it.

Best, Onno

Re the Disney ships' whistle playing "When you wish upon a star" ... I was on Explorer leaving Nassau, and one of the Disneys was leaving ahead of us.

Sure enough, Disney gave three blasts, we answered with three, and Disney replied with the tune.

Explorer's captain came on the tannoy and said: "We'll be on our way once that Mickey Mouse of a ship is out of our way..!"

The news is official, I think. We met someone who said that it was mentioned at the past passenger cocktail party by the crew.If she is truthful, then look forward to a Disney Megaship!I loved the ship, and the tune.I hope the new ship retains the wonderful exterior, interior, and family experience.

Being mentioned by the crew doesn't mean it's official... In fact probably as many entirely untrue things are said by crew than true ones.

If a real decision has been made, you aren't going to hear about it from someone who says they heard about from, say, a drinks waiter.

The crew wouldn't be able to know this stuff before the public would... Up to the point of offical release it would be kept amongst higher-level people at the company...

This is completely correct! When I worked onboard for Princess, the crew was the very last to know (this goes from Captain on down!). They like to "think" they know, and they hear a lot of speculation, but it is just that, speculation. Half the time the truth ends up being something completely different than what the crew is gossiping about.

The cruise lines and shipyards are pretty good about keeping things quiet until the right moment. The shipyards have a good relationship with the cruise line, so they know better than to "spill the beans" before anything is made public.

I would like to believe that Disney Cruise Line is planning a new ship, but it would surprise me right now if anything was ordered based on current market conditions and the value of the US dollar. Also, Disney Cruise Line parent company Disney is not in the best financial shape right now. They are doing fine, but not making the billions they are used to! I'm not sure how the stockholders would feel about a huge expenditure to Disney Cruise Line right now unless there was a guaranteed return on investment.

This being said, it's my understanding that Disney Cruise Line is doing rather well.... full just about every cruise with minimal discounting. Unfortunately, Disney does not disclose financial results of Disney Cruise Line seperated from Disney parks, and for this reason, no one really knows for sure just how well the ships are doing.

So, at the end of the day, your guess is as good as mine!

Ernie Roller,
Atlanta

That is a very good point - the prices of Disney are way above any other major cruise line... Including the more upscale ones like HAL and Celebrity.

I imagine that the Disney name is THE attraction of Disney Cruise Line, period. Most people I know who have been, are new to cruising, and not trusting of a company like Royal Caribbean or Carnival, who to them could just as well be fly-by-nights. The Disney name amounts to a certain reassurance of quality in their eyes.
