Porthole is a pretty good one. Supposedly it started as a B2B, geared towards agents and all, but now it appears it's more of a B2C.

I have had a subscription to Cruise Travel for a few years now and really like it. I had a subscription to Porthole for one year and chose not to renew because I felt it never offered too much information and seemed more like a general travel magazine instead of one specific to cruises.

Yes, Porthole did start as a B2B type publication but for a few years now I have begun to suspect it has been taken over by the folks who put out the "For Dummies" series of books. The range of actual information of any value that can be gained from reading it is highly questionable and I don't think I've bought a copy for two or three years now. I own several older ones, including the first newsstand issue from 1994, of course the information in them is now outdated but they are fun to read.

Now Porthole is glossy, fancy-looking, and utterly useless to the cruise enthusiast.

Cruise Travel is a much better consumer-oriented magazine, having little of Porthole's flash, but at least having some real information and interesting ship reviews, etc.

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Hello, All!
I agree with you, Cruiseny. Porthole has become of little interrest or help any more. Looks more like a fashion magazine now. Even has a article by Ivana Trump!
Cruise travel has more info on the ships and much better reviews. Usually a pretty accurate Cruise News section, too.
I have the old issues of Porthole and it seems like a totally different publication compared to what they are today. And your right, Cruiseny, they are fun to read! I also was fortunate to pick up some early 1970's issues of Ships Monthly at Powels Books in Porland Ore. about ten years ago. Talk about FUN to read! I wish I had had to sense to buy them all. If only Ships Monthly were easier to find here in the states.

Smooth Saes!

Although it is geared to the ship enthusiast and not to cruise lovers per se, "Steamboat Bill", published by the Steam Ship Historical Society of America,Inc., is a wonderful quarterly well worth the $35.00 membership dues each year. I am biased though as I sit on its non-paid Board of Directors and have been a member of the organization since 1976.

Hello,

B2B = Business to Business
B2C = Business to Consumer

In other words, a 'B2B' magazine might be marketed, say, at travel agents and cruise line executives. When Porthole was B2B, you'd find adverts for port authorities (come dock your ship here, your passengers will love it), airlines (we'll get your passengers to the port fast and on time), interior design firms (let us redesign an area of your ship), photography concessions (we have more experience chasing passengers with cameras than anyone else), spa concessions (Hmm...wonder which one ?), news fax services...

A 'B2C' magazine like Cruise Travel would have ads for travel agents (great deals on this or that cruise) or cruise lines (cruise us).

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

I do not see why you should have any trouble with finding magazines... I think you are in Northern Ireland which means most of them aren't even coming from abroad, just across the Irish Sea and not even across any national borders... I would think you have usual UK newsstands, etc. over there? Like WHSmith? If so, I think you would be able to get, say, Ships Motnthly quite easily... Then again, what do I know, I don't know why I'm even bothering to answer this question .

Happy Cruising,
Cruiseny

Steve you should be able to get any magazine you want just by asking your local newsagent. They only keep a small selection, depending on the size of store they are, but can order anything. Just you won't be able to browse before purchase.

Look at some online stores. I subbed to Ships Monthly last month through www.emagazineshop.com
The sub is £24pa, but for all orders over £20, the site is giving a £10 discount, so for £14 you can't go far wrong.

My first copy arrived a couple of weeks ago and it's great. Not just cruise ships though, if that's what you mainly want. There's a great centre spread poster of a 'cut-out' SS United States, and a good article on the ferries and liners laid up in Limassol by Peter Knego. Quite a few pages on the BC [British Columbia] Ferries. Worth every penny.

The ebsite above for Cruise Travel, doesn't indicate any extra charge for overseas, but on other sites it appears to be around $30 for 6 issues [bi monthly]. I haven't yet found it on a UK site.

I have to agree that Porthole has become uninteresting and not very helpful for the average consumer. Cruise Travel on the other hand has excellent articles and information that can be put to good use when researching your next cruise. They do have a website where you can place your order for a subscription and they will also send it overseas.

Ships Monthly can be contacted at 222 Branston Road, Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, DE14 3Bt, UK Subscriptions for 12 month;y issues are currently US$81 - Visa and Mastercard accepted. I can find no web address - they appear rather committed to print and to snail mail. The magazine is for a general ship-enthusiast readership - so you'll get a monthly fix of sailing, naval and cross-channel ferry news along with the cruise ship updates.

Two other UK mags not readily available in North America are Sea Breezes and Shipping Yesterday and Today, but neither matches Ships Monthly at the moment.

I subscribe to Cruise Travel, Ships Monthly, Steamboat Bill, Porthole (which I'm dropping for all the reasons listed in previous posts) - but my favorite by far is a quarterly put out by the Ocean Liner Society in England. It's called Sea Lines, has mostly color photos, and is a treasure trove for history of liners of the past up through present day cruise ships. My favorite part of each issue is a feature called "Dear Bliss". It consists of letters written during the 60's and 70's by a cruiser to his travel agent, I believe. In the latest Spring issue, he reviews his 8 June 1974 cruise on Home Lines "Oceanic", including several color pictures. The magazine (about 39 pages, with only a few ads of ocean liner memorabilia) also has articles on new ships, with color pictures.

The web site is: www.ocean-liner-society.com

E mail is:
sealines@ocean-liner-society.com

Hope some of you find this info. useful. Marilyn

I get Ocean and Cruise News. It is more like a news paper than a magazine. No pictures, just articles and write ups on each cruise line.
I also get Porthole and Cruise Travel. I like Cruise Travel the best. I thought of dropping Porthole for all the reasons stated in previous posts.

Wow, I guess I have a nasty habit of opening up major cans of worms.

I suspect I should be trashing my Porthole subscription? I have to admit that I see what you mean about the "fashion-show" mentality. The magazine does appear to be less about cruising per se and more about destinations.

Long before there was a cruise page--and long before there was an Internet, I subscribed to Cruise Travel..One year only.

I found two themes...and mind you things may well have changed by now.

1. Gee whiz reviews of very ship featured in a month by month basis. Every thing was, gosh, great. I did not see a true review, as would be done by a critic who was not working for an ad-supported medium, which addressed the shortcomings of ships, cuisine, accomdations and such.

2. Aim at the Kathy Lee "fun ship" market. I remember one article, including the following:
"As I started in on my second bottle of 'Andre'..I had to decide what to do next."

[and for the benefit of non Americans here, 'Andre' was a really cheap belch-inducing champagne, for me at least]

Letters to the editor bemoaned the absence of double beds as a major theme.

But as a journal to give me some insight on ships and their characteristics it was - then at least -not worth my subscription funds.

Cambodge - I have to agree with you re your comments about Cruise Travel. I think the letters to the editor are more interesting than the magazine itself. But we really don't have much to choose from, and it does beat Porthole IMHO.

Did anyone see any copies of Ship Afficionado? It was a quarterly, and the first issue came out in summer of '99. I thought it showed alot of promise, but, unfortunately, it folded after only 3 issues. Sea Lines remains my favorite. Does anyone subscribe to it?
