A co-worker told me that one of the news stories last evening was about a passenger from a cruise ship being hurt in the dolphin encounter area in Mexico. A boulder fell striking him in the head and he died 24 hours later. Does anyone know anything about this?

The incident was on CBS Evening News. It was not shown as a recent story, as it was part of an "essay" as to how Carnival did not support the family and hung them out to dry. so to speak.

It was presented not as a recent development, since there was much investigative reporting in the piece...interviews and such. Carnival did not look good as a result.

I saw the same news report on CBS as well and no, Carnival did not look good at all!!

According to the report, after the accident and tragic death of the husband, a Carnival rep contacted the wife to make sure she wanted to disembark and asked her...."what do you want us to do with your luggage"?

At the very least, Carnival should have sent a rep from the ship to assist the wife (2 kids were on the trip as well) as she was having language problems with the local authorities. It also may have been a nice touch to maybe put the family up in a hotel and delivered their luggage to them personally.

I realize Carnival has no responsibility for the cause of the accident even though the excursion was booked through them, but this is cold and heartless. My wife and I have cruised exclusively with Carnival for our last 3 cruises with no problems at all, but this certainly made us look at them in a different light.

I have seen so many different versions of this story one wonders what the real truth is. It was 2 years ago. It all seems to boil down to the fact the family had no travel insurance; so they have to blame someone. Had they been insured it would have saved a lot of heartache.

Thanks for all of the info. My co-worker was under the impression that the accident recently happened. We too have just returned from our third Carnival cruise and enjoyed all of them. Seems like travel insurance is a "must."

billybob...AMOI..All ships in ALL ports ALL over the world retain local Ships Agents to represent them and take care of all the necessary business.
In this case they would most definately be involved as no one alive or dead is allowed to remain behind when a ship sails without permission from the local authorities. In fact the ship cannot sail until everything is correct.

So take anything you see with a very large pinch of salt.

gohaze.....thanks for the info, I did not know that.

Going just by the news report, they made Carnival look like a bunch of heartless monsters with no feelings. Glad you could show me differently.

As I said in my post, my wife and I have had a ball on our last 3 cruises with Carnival and we were looking forward to booking another one next year. Just from our experience, I couldn't believe they'd do what CBS claimed.

Thanks again for the "pinch of salt".
